Neither cheap nor expensive, Little Bottler provides a handy spot to grab some grog on the way out if you're at Chatswood - it's just opposite the Transport Interchange. It's got all the old favourites in the beers, spirits and RTDs, plus a somewhat impressive range of both red and white wine. The guys behind the counter are usually friendly young things who are always willing to help you out with wine advice or, in my case, make fun of your choice of pink Vodka Cruisers. Happy days!

The shop is big enough to offer a respectable wine range at fair prices, and there is almost always a deal on for New Zealand white wines, my favorite. They have a small section full of pre mixed spirits and cheap beer, but that's not really the target audience for this place. I'm considering moving one suburb over, but even if I do, this will still be my favorite local bottle shop.

The prices are nothing short of staggering, especially when you compare them to your usual bottle-o, or - shock horror - with restaurant prices! The savings are extraordinary, especially if you buy in bulk. And you should definitely buy in bulk. Stock up for Christmas. Stock up for summer barbecues. All it takes is one pirate sailing a trolley, with frigate-sinking quantites of rum, down an aisle to ruin it for everyone. C'mon now! We aren't pirates, you don't need every last vestige of rum in the store. Arrrrggghhhhh. Speaking of rums, I've been here times when there are literally only 2 or 3 varities of the stuff to choose from. Being a bit of a rum proselytiser this situation vexes me. With DM's buying power I want em all. Gunpowder, Kraken, Gosling Black Seal - and yes - Ron Zacapa, especially if you stock Ron Jeremy... The Dan's is in a great location, it's ground floor right next to the car park, and two doors down from Woolies, so you can do all your shopping without having to worry about the rest of the shops. What also helps is it is well staffed. Despite being super biz, the lines move quick. There might be 4 or 5 checkout staff zipping peeps through which is the big plus here.

The staff are super knowledgeable and it's always fun to geek out with other beer lovers over new brews and long awaited imports. You can buy online, but I would definitely recommend going in to try a sample of whatever is on tap that week. Also, they have Growlers and Squealers to fill and take away! Yay!

They also have a smaller yet good selection of other alcoholic beverages and some snacks. The growlers and squealer fills that change weekly are a highlight also. It's just that they don't have aisles and aisles filled with pretentious wines and champagnes, and stuff that only either the really rich, or the really adventurous alcoholic might drink. They have a variety of spirits, a variety of whiskey/rum, a variety of beer, and a variety of mixed drinks, which is more than enough for me. I can find anything I need at a glance, rather than having to waste precious should-be-drunk-by-now minutes trying to find some Absolut amidst all the freakin' fermented grape juice. All that, AND their prices are fairly low!

Nirvana Beach Liquor makes very good use of its space, with a great wine selection for a pretty tiny bottle shop, and every spare inch of floor covered with shelving and display boxes. He carries all the usual suspects from 19 of Spain's wine regions: Riojia, Tempranillo, Pedro Jiminez etc, etc. If you're lucky and Jose is in the shop and not in his office upstairs, stay and have a talk with him, he is a fountain of knowledge about Spain and its wines. I met Jose around 15 years ago and became interested in Spanish wines because of him. He has been importing wine since 1974 and he now imports half of all Spanish wine coming into the country. If you want to make your own tapas at home, impress your guests with a selection of products from Broadway Liquor because they have a limited selection of Spanish delicacies, oil, Spanish Mineral Water and Spanish Cider. Pop in and have a look around, you will be surprised at your choice of wines. They also sell Australian and Italian wines, beers and spirits.

Unlike some other bottle shops where you're wilfully left to your own devices, or if you look under the age of about 30, treated with a palpable level of suspicion, this BWS is great. The staff, as soon as they saw me browsing the beer section with a look of vague bewilderment, came to ask me if I needed any help. I did, of course, and they pointed me in the direction of a mid-price but good quality beer - something I had no idea how to choose. They even carried the chosen 6-pack to the counter for me, showing unnecessary but exemplary service. Their friendliness and helpfulness is widely acknowledged - I was recommended to go to them by a friend who also had found them incredibly nice. She'd managed to drop her newly purchased bottle of wine as soon as she stepped out of the door. The staff at BWS replaced the bottle for her, free of charge. I think such generosity needs to be recognised, and so I'm doing my best to make sure that everyone knows that the Edgecliff BWS is the nicest and best place to buy your beer and wine.
