There are wild bottles with pewter race horses sitting atop the stopper and ceramic gourds the shape of flying saucers, it's a boozer's heaven in here. They've got a wall dedicated to craft beers, microbrews and ciders, and a gigantic selection of wines with a particular focus on Australian drops. And the staff aren't just pretty faces . . . there is some serious knowledge ticking about this place. Oh, and even better? The Oak Barrel is fully independent, in fact it's one of Sydney's oldest independent bottle-o's. No big soulless chains here, fellow drinkers. This is everything the discerning drinker could possibly want.

We would have preferred a greater variety of Australian wines... we were particularly looking for some standouts from Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale: Woodhenge Shiraz and The Absconder grenache) They were also out of affordable sparkling shiraz (which he had hoped to have for NYE), and it was explained that it was due to selling out at Christmas. Its located right next to Coles so after you've done your shopping you can walk right in without the need to drive to the nearest Dan Murphys which is unfortunately a 5 min drive up the road with no shopping centre next door to it. I often drop in here to grab a bottle of wine and although they have a limited range they do still stock a lot of good stuff and you can always find something nice. On average I end up paying about $5 a bottle more when I buy here but if you only want one or two things its the price you pay for convenience. They also regularly have specials where if you spend $30 or more you can grab something else (usually a 6 pack of beer or a bottle of wine) for an extra $10. Quite often the saving you make doing that cancels out the $5 extra you paid for the wine and you come out with a good deal!

Went here last night for a Craft beer tasting night (it cost $20) As we entered we got a nice beer glass, there was a cheese spread available which was tasty! They had booklets of what beers were on offer to sample ranging from lagers, wheat beers, pale ales, golden ales to the dark beers and IPA's. Had over 35 beers to sample! Some included 1664 Blanc, Moo Brew, Blue Moon, Matilda Bay Alpha Pale Ale, Franziskaner Dunkel to Cascade Stout and even tried Guinness! On the tables they also had free popcorn, nuts and pretzels to nibble on. Further, they had a guy serenading us with his amazing guitar and vocals skills. There were also waiters on hand to serve hot food such as seared salmon, mini hot dogs with all the trimmings and what looked like curry puffs! Staff were extremely helpful and as we walked out we found out we got to keep our crafty beer glass (good thing we didnt just leave it on the tables!). Great night enjoying some of the craft beers from Australia, NZ to Germany.

If you're of more refined tastes (and have a healthy bank balance to match), Camperdown Cellars also offers a selection of rare and aged wines - not the sort of thing you'd take to the local Thai restaurant. It also offers a good selection of foreign beers - which pleases me, as I'm able to buy some of my favourite English ales (yes, the ones that are usually served room temperature!), although they are a little more pricey than in the off-licenses of London, but they do have to fly here I suppose. I had no idea but there is this fantastic rival to DM's right down the road from me. I think it's actually cheaper too! I got a Pewsey Vale Riesling for $20. It can be as much as $30 at some places so that is a great difference. It's huge this place and they have all your regular wines in one corner and then displayed in the middle is your rarer ones. Then they have a wall held especially for their best wines. I love this section. They carry all sorts of vodka's here like Bison and Kettle one. What I can't get over is the price! Also, the fact that they don't really advertise and nobody knows they exist just baffles me. They are even hard to spot from the street especially when dark. Oh well, it's like a well kept secret which I am now in the know. Yes!
