I've had breakfast here several times and it's pretty good especially if you have room for dessert. The reason why I deducted stars are for their lunch menu and the coffee. I've been here during the weekday to have lunch and the coffee the last few times were very average which is a little disappointing considering their sign at the front advertises "Barista made coffee". Lunch menu is nothing special from the average cafe style lunches but the quality isnt really up to par. I've had the grilled flat head and chips which was VERY dry and chewy. Tried the salmon another time, they asked me how i would like it cooked and I chose med/rare and it came out very well done. My husband had the steak one time and we're pretty sure that it was a minute steak that came out and it was cooked very well done again and it was too chewy. However, I'll still come back for the breakfast menu and Pappa's cakes but maybe only on the weekend when it's a different "barista" thats behind the coffee machine.

Quite often cheaper than Dan Murphy and they are good guys, except that they sometimes make their Mum look after the shop. They stock stuff you can't get elsewhere like Petersons Chardonnay and Scarborough White Label. There is a good range of aged wine and a comprehensive beer fridge. It was one of the first places in Sydney to stock Little Creatures Pale Ale and thus I have been going back with an unhealthy regularity. Cynthia and Mark's reviews are spot on and I intend to keep supporting Jim's even if it kills me.

I had no idea but there is this fantastic rival to DM's right down the road from me. I think it's actually cheaper too! I got a Pewsey Vale Riesling for $20. It can be as much as $30 at some places so that is a great difference. It's huge this place and they have all your regular wines in one corner and then displayed in the middle is your rarer ones. Then they have a wall held especially for their best wines. I love this section. They carry all sorts of vodka's here like Bison and Kettle one. What I can't get over is the price! Also, the fact that they don't really advertise and nobody knows they exist just baffles me. They are even hard to spot from the street especially when dark. Oh well, it's like a well kept secret which I am now in the know. Yes!

And don't be fooled by the cheapness of the clean skin wines, they're actually surprisingly good! Wow, I sound cheap! But that's the truth, they're not good in glass bottles, put it that way. The staff are friendly and will usually help you out if you're having trouble deciding what you're in need of, and they sometimes hold in-store wine tastings. Yay, free wine! We got the Ricotta special - sourdough with ricotta topped with berries, walnuts, pistachios, seasonal fruit and honey. Really beautifully presented and tasty. We also got the Haloumi stack - a free range egg with a side of avocado, spinach, roast tomato, haloumi and balsamic vinegar. Egg poached perfectly. As for drinks, a latte was on order with some latte art and we also got a tea which was brewed with leaves. The staff were attentive and friendly and the owner Susanne was particularly hospitable.

It is tall and red bricked with bright yellow arches to welcome the customer in. There is also outside seating round the side with charming mismatched furniture and a kind of backyard feel. The other customers in here seemed to be predominantly mother/daughter combinations and one terribly awkward date, so this clearly draws people in for the charm factor. The main room is painted in a similar jolly yellow and has the counter at the far end. Although there were menus on the tables I skipped straight to the counter as I was in the mood for a quick lunch. There was the offer of a few uninspiring wraps on the blackboard but the friendly guy behind the counter recommended some yummy lunchtime specials, mushroom risotto is a capsicum or vegetable lasagna, both would come accompanied with the multi-coloured and imaginative salads exhibited. I plumped for the veggie lasagna and a rocket side salad which came to $12.50. Sitting outside in the sun I was blissfully unaware about how long it was taking to warm up the lasagna, until I realised my lunch break was nearly over. When it did come, the lasagne was slightly over-dominated by the tomato puree and could have done with a more diverse range of flavours, but the salad redeemed the dish. Cous cous, rocket, pomegranite and pear all made an unlikely but beautiful combination which sweetened the blander lasagna. Slightly overpriced? Perhaps, but the setting is very special.
