This project of building a retaining wall at Correria Junior High School was a massive undertaking:…read more1,400 linear feet of sheet pile and concrete retaining wall, drainage brow ditch and cable railing, removal and replacement of 1,452 lineal feet of curb, gutter and sidewalk, one curb ramp, new irrigation lines and appurtenances for new irrigation services, 1,020 lineal feet of chain link fence, planting and irrigation and miscellaneous improvements to install a 2-feet thick soil cap over existing burn ash at the school site. All this occurred at the busy corner of Valeta Street and Famosa Blvd. Reyes Construction did the job and it turned out very nice. One big reason for the project? There was toxic waste at the site from its construction in the late 1950's and it needed to be dealt with. Between 2001 and 2008, SDUSD conducted environmental investigations at the site and determined that elevated concentrations of lead and dioxins/furans believed to be from burn ash material brought onto the site and mixed with on-site materials during construction of the fill slopes and portions of the playing fields. Also a concern? Contaminated run-off from the school site into nearby Famosa Slough. A community activist observed sediment run-off flowing into the Slough from the School Site and reported it to the state Water Board. A notice of violation was given to the City Schools to contain the pollution. Eventually, a storm water treatment system was installed in 2009 at the parking lot on the eastern portion of the site. This now removes sediment from storm water run off before it enters the Slough. This system has helped clean up the water at Famosa Slough greatly. Also, the retaining wall would help out with a big problem in the area: parking. The new retaining wall has built up the upper parking lot at the school and now there is finally significant space for additional parking and for parking spaces at adjacent Bill Cleator Park. Future projects planned for the new greatly expanded site include a Correia Sports Complex with multiple-use fields, space for soccer, football, lacrosse and field hockey events, with seating for spectators and ,continued use of an existing baseball field at the site and expanded night lighting. 5 YELP STARS for the new retaining wall. That corner now looks so much better without the dead weeds and pickleweed that used to grow on the hillside. The wall cleaned up pollution in the ground and water and it will help improve the dire parking situation in the area for the YMCA and the baseball and soccer crowd who play at Bill Cleator Park. Eventually, the retaining wall with help to make more room for a projected enhanced sports complex that the entire Point Loma Cluster of schools will be able to use for Pennisula sports activities.

Some students appear to spend more time trying to look mysterious in the bathroom than they do learning. The teachers deserve medals, raises, vacations, and probably therapy. Many are clearly overworked and doing their best to teach while also serving as counselors, security guards, referees, conflict mediators, and part-time detectives. A kid got punched this year on the field just because! Tons of adults around too. The fact that learning occurs at all is nothing short of miraculous. A handful of students seem determined to keep racism alive despite everyone knowing better by now. It's disappointing and makes life harder for students who are just trying to get an education. Overall, this school taught valuable life lessons for my kid, including patience, conflict management, and how to recognize chaos from a safe distance. Would not recommend. Home school if you can! However, outside of all those factors just rating the school, I would say PL High is garbage and I will give you concrete examples: 1) When kids ditch or skip class as many do (statistics say that skipping class has increased since COVID,) the staff are so stupid they let their students sit in the quad or library and pay NO attention to the fact that they're not in class. I had to call the school, email the counselor, sports coach, principal to inform them my child was ditching and NO ONE bothered to write me back! I then just had the idiots in the office just transfer me to the library to let them know she was sitting in the library in class time w/ friends socializing. 2) The old black lady at the front desk is the most unwelcoming, difficult, angry, "see" you next Tuesday I have ever met. I should have walked right out of that shithole the minute we went in for orientation in 9th grade. She is MISERABLE with her job. Taking a DMV worker and putting them on steroids is what this lady is like. The ladies who answer the phone are no better. 3) Cally Fallenstein, one of the "counselors," is not only epically useless, but she is super rude and passive-aggressive with her students. They are kids, they ask questions, and she responds in a demeaning, disrespectful, shitty tone. 4) Their long history of garbage Spanish teachers is laughable. A couple years ago, their "Spanish Teacher" would show up about 35% of the time, the kids would sit in the quad hanging out because their flakey teacher was either late or absent. He even said to one student, something to the effect of, " I will do it, but what are you going to do for me?" which has MASSIVE sexual undertones. He got away with this because he is "gay." The next Spanish teacher, while an absolute sweetheart, ran his class like a naive child, he let the kids run the classroom letting them TEXT during class. Thanks to their shitty choice of teachers, my child is now way behind in Spanish, no doubt. 5) There is ZERO implementation of a dress code, so girls dress like they're 24 and go clubbing downtown with outfits that make me gasp regularly (and I am no prude, conservative, believe me!) 6) You will get TONS of texts, emails, and calls from the district about the free lunch program and a bunch of other useless nonsense; however, when you call the school back to find out if and WHY your child missed a class, they cannot tell you ANYTHING. They don't know where your child is or why they are missing. Totally incompetent. 7) There was a child that got PUNCHED (sucker punched at that) SO HARD that he had t have his JAW WIRED SHUT. In my opinion there is NOT enough done to make kids feel included and safe. Kids need support, if they're new in town, it's like walking into a CULT. 8) Speaking of CULTS, the parents are primarily nuts, in my opinion; you have a ton of lame OLDER Gen X ( ppl who got their homes handed down from their parents, no doubt, and they try to RELIVE their lives through their kids at PLH, and are very mental. 9) The teachers are just paper pushers, for the most part, having kids rewrite crap from books and make it into slides. There are a few good teachers, the art teacher, and the physics teacher, to name a few. All the others my child had were mediocre at best. 10) Anytime there is GUN violence or any violence, you get a cryptic, vague email from the school principal, and then you have to research NEXTDOOR.com to find out if your kid will be safe the next day. 11) No more BOOKS all on their crappy tiny screen on their Chromebook, although so idiotic they STILL make the kids take books they don't even use. Do yourself a favor; if you have money, just put your kids in a smaller private school. You don't have to go to LJ Country Day--they have more economical options than that. Even High Tech High is better. One of the best suggestions yet is to move out of dumpy Point Loma and get to a better school. We moved to Temecula Valley School District, and it is NIGHT AND DAY--- even my child says the kids are nicer, more wholesome, and the teachers are more enthusiastic, and it's fun to learn. My only regret is we did not move to Temecula earlier. PS- PLH give kids a TON of homework. The schools in TV, at least the one we're at, have NO HOMEWORK!!! They do EVERYTHING in class and learn there, besides occasional projects or extra studying. Idiots at PLH, just send your kid to Khan Academy and don't even bother.

It truly is an amazing Christian school where students are not only receiving an excellent education, but are also encouraged to grow in their faith, character, and relationship with God. The teachers and staff genuinely care about their students and go above and beyond to create a loving, supportive, and Christ-centered environment. Last year my sons HTM projects included: Designing a campaign ad for underdeveloped regions that are being overtaken by rebels, writing a letter to their government, collaborating with his group to produce a hand-painted, large scale interactive map complete with home made clay tablets, pyramids, houses, volcanoes, etc, of his chosen region (beautifully done), seting up power-point presentations and videos, writing and producing videos, simulating a home made water cleansing system, explaining his knowlege of earthquakes, demonstrating how to solve math problems, and so much more! All of these projects are shown to the parents in a POL, Presentation of Learning, where the kids dress up in business clothing, (yes, the boys wear ties) and conduct their presentation in front of 8 parents and their teachers. It is so amazing to see how confident, enthusiastic, and tremendously knowledgeable these young kids are are in front of a audience! The parents are allowed to ask questions afterwards and you cannot stump these kids with any question! They know the information inside and out. They are our future leaders! The big auditorium next to the cafeteria; the large play field sandwiched right in the middle of the school. The Kindergarten located right above it all and the very convenient drive-thru alley that goes right down the side of the school. That alley is perfectly adapted for parents to just cruise down and drop their kids off at the end. No hassles with traffic or crosswalks or school cops! Simple and clean. As for the academics of Silver Gate, I think the school is just a few points behind nearby Sunset View Elementary School when it comes to test scores. I read that it is among the few public elementary schools in California to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10. I also know there is a lot of community spirit around the school. The parents are very supportive and turn out in large numbers for school events.Silver Gate Elementary School hosted a inaugural Holiday Tree Sale on Dec. 4 of last year to raise money for the Silver Gate Foundation. The Silver Gate website is full of notices for jog-a-thons, bake sales, restaurant fund-raisers, and silent auctions-all to raise money and benefit the school.
