As a first-timer I felt shy and sat in a corner but everyone (even the elite) were so friendly and continually asked me to dance (and taught me steps along the way)! I tend to be very uncomfortable when it comes to physical contact but dancing with everyone felt rather natural! Our instructor was pleasant and patient, and we had a great time learning basic salsa moves!! The other people in the drop-in class were two other couples...so be warned as that generally seems the norm for classes. I think the academy also does "salsa parties" which are more free practice sessions. The time flew by, and we were encouraged to videotape the last 5 minutes of the instructor giving an overview of what we had learned, so we could come back after practicing on our own! They structure the classes well so that you can put together a routine by the time you finish up a course. The instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We went to one of the later classes in the series, so we needed some clarification on a part of the routine that we had missed in prior classes. One of the instructors, Craig, was great about showing us what we had missed and helping us both get it right. He didn't just show us what we had asked about; he asked us to do the entire routine to make sure we understood it all, which was great. I'm looking forward to attending the rest of the classes in this series as well as the higher-level classes.

The other teachers (Jonathan, Krystal, etc.) are also wonderful. This studio supports the Rowan Dance team when the college is in session so it is nice to see young dancers learning. They also support 'Ballroom Dancing for a Better U' non-profit. The adult group classes are small enough you get a bit of individual attention and big enough to have nice energy. Generally, there is a fairly even mix of leaders/followers so you can come single or with a partner. They have a website with a calendar so you can check out a class or two to see what you think. Their Social Dance Party is on Thursday so you can get a jumpstart on the weekend.
