I love DanceWorks! They really have a fantastic set up with their various rooms and dance class…read moreofferings. I did on a month-long unlimited, pass at a silent auction, and happily won that prize. I wanted to maximize my win, so I ended up taking a lot of classes that DanceWorks offers. Here are my thoughts: Cardio Hip hop: great for any and every level dancer. Exercise focused. K-pop: be prepared to pick up choreography, and two sequential Wednesday classes equates to one whole K-pop song routine. SWERK: picture Zumba with Twerking. Exercise focused. Great for any and every level. Ballet for absolute beginners: a very simplified, slow, basic educational course. Required for taking beginner ballet. Beginner ballet: ballet for absolute beginners will not teach you everything you need to know for this class. I'm not sure there is any way to be ready for this class. Just know you are going to feel very left behind, and sort of like an idiot for a few classes until you can catch up. But who cares? Unfortunately, I got walking pneumonia after taking all those classes, so I wasn't able to try everything they offered. However, I'd say Cardio Hip Hop was my favorite!

The 305 class was great as it included cardio and a little bit of planking/abs. I have heard some of the other classes are not necessarily a great workout since you spend most of the time learning choreo, but this class was basically Zumba. The instructor, Jill, was very high energy and welcoming--give that lady a raise! The facilities felt a little outdated, but I think it's a great value if you are a regular member for the $125/month for unlimited classes.

I've got a couple friends who regularly have exhibits in shows at The Garfield Park Arts Center,…read morehowever, since I live in Lawrence I simply don't get down this way as often. I really should. The Garfield Park Arts Center, like the park itself, falls under Indy Parks. Originally built in 1922 as the "Community House," it was designed to look like a picnic shelter with enclosed walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces at each end. In 1930, a large swimming pool was located in the area that is now the parking lot. At that time, it was primarily used as a locker room and rec center area. In 1990, the pool was removed and replaced by the Aquatic Center that is now located at the Burrello Family Center. In 2006, the "Community House" was remodeled with a $2.7 million grant. It became the Garfield Park Arts Center. The 8,000 square foot facility now houses a multi-use performing arts space, exhibition hall, visual and production arts classrooms, a recording studio, a literary arts library, and a rehearsal room. The GPAC is big enough that it typically has multiple exhibits going. For example, right now there's a modern quilting show, a solo show by Jay Hamm, and a show by Christy Harp. GPAC hosts a variety of workshops and classes including current activities like voice and piano lessons, ceramics, and quite a few visual arts options including those specifically for children. The classes are way affordable - for example, there's a $10 rock painting class for kids. As someone who has a pet rock, I'm all for rock painting. GPAC also hosts summer camps and special events. The calendar is on their website. I'm particularly enchanted by a classic movie night. They've also assisted with some of the public art in Garfield Park. The art center tends to be open limited hours - for example, 1-5pm during the week. It does participate in First Fridays. I'm a big fan of Garfield Park and I'm a big fan of having access to the arts. I find this facility to be quite accessible and even more after their 2006 renovation. It's not perfect (no building of this age is), however, it's quite good. Prices are affordable and the center itself has a nice combination of nostalgia with contemporary comforts. Especially for those with kids who may enjoy the classes, GPAC is a definite winner.

It would be nearly impossible to not love what Dance Kaleidoscope adds to the city of Indianapolis…read more I was in their offices this past weekend for another event. It was an opportunity to reflect on my own experiences with them (and to ask myself why I'd never reviewed them). Longtime Artistic Director David Hochoy retired in 2022-23, a season which was also the organization's 50th. They are one of the Midwest's longest-performing professional dance companies. Now under the leadership of Joshua Blake Carter, Dance Kaleidoscope presents four unique mainstage performances in Indy each year. They're a very accessible group. They participate in the Access Pass Program. This allows people to experience dance with $5 tickets and even dance classes at a discounted rate. They are also known for partnering with a variety of non-profits from Damien Center to the Children's Museum to Ballet Hispanico to quite a few others. In 2019, they located inside the Factory Arts District. They offer 34 weekly classes to over 200 students. They also share their studio with other groups (including Indy Film Fest). As a wheelchair user, I've always been pretty in awe of dance. I absolutely adore Dance Kaleidoscope, and I adore what they contribute to this community. Factory Arts is really the ideal location for them. Schrott Center and the Toby at Newfields seem to be two of their favorite places to perform here in Indy. If you've never checked out Dance Kaleidoscope, I highly recommend it.

During quarantine, he is leading classes over Zoom (aka Zoomba, get it?) and I highly recommend them for people of any skill/experience level who want to get their heart pumping and forget they're even working out. The dances are perfect, just challenging enough - not super easy, but after a few classes you'll start to have the routines memorized. I haven't taken his other classes yet at Riolo but look forward to one day as I have heard great things! If you like zumba-style classes then you know it's all about having a great instructor. Once you find one you love, it becomes the best part of your day and you never want to miss a class. That is Xavier to so many people in Indy! Support local talent always but especially right now, if you can.

Hip hop classes, yes please!…read more One of the most legit hip hop teachers in the city, Fonzie, made the class fun and interactive. The class itself is an hour and fairly low-key - just pure fun. Everyone learns new moves for the first 20 minutes of class, learn a dance, and then do it in groups of two with Fonzie. Only $10 a class. Music: Loved it. Lots of Chris Brown and Bruno Mars. The class can also request songs for choreography each week. Studio: Spacious and modern, the studio boasts a huge mirror, exterior seating, and a huge dance floor. It's a bit hispanic too and made me want to take a salsa class later too. Location: The building is on the corner of Michigan and Capitol, but the door is a bit hidden and is located on Capitol. Look for the Riolo Dance logo printed on the door, walk in, and take the elevator to the second floor.

It's an incredible community to be a part of. On top of that, they offer monthly socials and recommend weekly dance spots like The Red Room and Jazz Kitchen to practice what you've learned in class and also expand your skills! The dancers were good, very professional, choreography ok. My FAVORITE dancer was by far Yoshiko Kamikusa who is a founding artist. As a former dancer myself, I was totally captivated by Yoshiko. She was strong, graceful, flawless, and absolutely stunning. I enjoyed the evening and applaud the Ballet company. I hope to see them again.

It seems as if two groups were starting within 30 min of each, and so extra littles were just hanging out for 30 min. People are coming and going. Door remained locked and parents didn't go past front entry, but for this newbie mom, I had to wait in the hallway for 5 min just to make sure my daughter didn't come out crying from too much going on....after a year of the class, even experiencing a questionable photoshoot day, I still feel they have a good dance school and great way to stay involved and aware of the professional ballet dance community. If we still lived in the city, my daughters would all go, but sadly, we are a good 30 min drive away. Will still venture downtown to see a production.
