It can be uncomfortable just to be standing in that kind of weather, let alone doing cardio for an hour plus. Honestly, this seems irresponsible to me, and I'm confused by the fact that they don't seem to be concerned about heat stroke. There are definitely days when the only reason I don't go to class is because there's no AC. I also wish they had contemporary classes (they have one "contemporary modern" once a week, which is not the same as contemporary).

Feeling the desire to move beyond the monotony of the gym, I returned to ballet, starting with the adult classes at Fresh Pond Ballet 2 years ago. Nina Alonso Hathaway is a wonderful teacher. She presents clear, no pressure instruction while helping her students to improve their skills. I've had many teachers who believe the path to becoming a better ballerina involves insults and physical torment, and Nina is about as far from that camp of teaching as possible. She works with Blake Barich as well, who teaches with her, and Blake maintains a similar philosophy to teaching as Nina does. Her studio is affordable and a good choice for adults with hectic lives, as instead of a semester fee, she offers a 10-class card for $105 dollars. If you need to miss a class, you are not going to lose on your investment. Adults of all levels join her adult beginner classes, and students who have had training in the past are welcomed to dance with her advanced students (and even invited to take part in their annual ballet production at Pine Manor College).

I have 2 daughters and both have taken classes at FPB and other schools and the contrast is dramatically different. First of all, the place is a disaster. Having a lifelong relationship with dance - I have always taken lessons and belonged to gyms. I am an athlete, not a princess, so I don't need my workout space to look like a spa. But this "school" is a joke. There is no place to change, you have to step over strollers and parents changing diapers in some weird hallway, and I always feel like I am in the way or somehow in the wrong while trying to get my daughter ready for her class. I asked Nina if the bathroom had any more paper towels one time and she snapped at me with too much detail about her landlord not doing something or another and how it wasn't her responsibility to potty train children! I was astounded. Which brings me to Nina. My girls started classes with Nina last year. They were so excited to take dance lessons and learn how to dance like ballerinas! But Nina's critical nature and short temper soon took the wind out of my daughters' sails. Like I said, I've taken dance classes off and on for my whole life and have an understanding and appreciation for the discipline and hard work it takes to become good at dance or any of the performing arts. But Nina seemed more focused on keeping her students well behaved than well trained. My oldest daughter never asked to quit (even though 2 of her friends did) and went to every class, but I could see her mood change and as we would get closer to the class. She would set her jaw like she had to endure the class. It was stressful. My younger daughter's class was completely disorganized. Beginner classes always have a variety of levels but my daughter's skill actually got worse in Nina's class. The girls went to a different (not to be named) school this year and have blossomed. The school welcomes parents w a pleasant environment and they don't harass us with rules about where to sit and how to stand and when to pay. They have parking for cars and strollers and the teachers can focus on teaching the art of ballet. The teachers are firm but kind and my daughters have re-discovered their love of dance. Reading the previous reviewer's post about how the school really worked for her as an older returning student makes a lot of sense. I think that the teachers at FPB just don't have the energy for teaching to youngsters any more.

But my relationship with Gervais comes with one loaded, trendy, hear it now and scream it later word: ZUMBA! Zumba with Judy is your ticket to a wonderful time at Gervais. Twice a week, the long, one room studio fills with something like 20 local women, all ages, all sizes, all smiles. In one hour, your pores will surrender more sweat than you thought a body could produce in below-freezing weather. Share a conspiratorial grin with your fellow salsa warriors as you stuff yourself back into that winter hat and gloves on your way to the parking lot. The day is made.

They are lovely here and I have not had a bad experience even when we had a bad situation arise with my daughter's first production. I love that they are instilling the love of theater into these kids. They also discuss the process of a production and the characterthe child is portraying even when it is a small, non-speaking roll, They utilize all of the children that try out and it works wonderfully. We have thus far only been able to do the musicals but one day the stars will align in our schedules and we will get to do a black box production. My favorite production so far has been "The Pirates of Penzance".

The Puppet Showplace Theatre is one of those hidden gems you just need to check out. They hold…read morefull-on puppet shows with elaborate puppets crafted by world-renown artists and with stories told by famous storytellers. You've probably driven by a hundred times looking at the bright lettering and the cool paintings on the windows but really, stop by for a show one night. They have adult shows too (not that kind of adult show) which is what I'm recommending. I'm sure the kids shows are amazing, great for brithday parties etc. but I've never actually seen a kid show. If you're looking for a funny interesting night, check out a PuppetSLAM which is what I saw... This is from their website: "It's an evening of short varied theatrical mini-plays for adults that use (or sometimes abuse) puppets for all or part of the drama. Each piece is performed by a different artist or artists, and the content can be wide-ranging; some are elegant or poignant, others are satiric, irreverent, or humorous, and still others can be passionate, political, or spiritual in nature. The performers range from the seasoned professional to the nascent puppeteer, and often include poets, musicians, dancers, mimes, actors, and other sundry affiliated artists." These guys are also non-profit, so help 'em out and go see a show. They're funny and you'll have a good story to tell about how you went to a puppet show :)

But my daughter actually decided to quit in the middle of her second year because she got bored and wanted to try something else. She now wants to start again, but I will NOT be sending her back to CSDS. The recital is great. Very entertaining. But they're business practices need some work. First off all, the recital tickets are bought on a first come first serve basis. They appoint a time and everyone has to go to the studio at that time and only that time. I had to actually work on the day and time that they had specified, so I asked if I could drop off a check at an earlier time. The director said no, that it wouldn't be fair. So I had to send my mother to the studio for me at the alloted time at 2pm. I came to find out that there was a class in the morning on the same day and that the parents had already bought their tickets that morning and all the good seating was already gone. Is that fair? She says no to me but says yes to others! I don't care if it's only a couple of hours before the allotted time, it's still ahead of time! Secondly, I spent $30 on a dvd of the recital that skipped. I couldn't even watch my daughter's dance. I was told I could get a replacement. I never got it, after muliple emails and speaking to the instructor. Lastly, my daughter's costume was paid in full ($60) before she decided to quit last year. I was told I could pick up her costume when they came in. I called them multiple times to find out if the costume was in. I never spoke to any one. I left messages and got no return phone call. So in the end they took $90 (dvd and costume) and I have nothing to show for it. Not even a phone call. This studio has dance teams that compete, and if you're not on the dance team, they really don't care about you. Their customer service skills are the worst. We'll be going back to Chery's School of Dance in Melrose!

Beautiful! Carole King... I saw this show twice in two…read moreweekends and I'd see it again! Olivia Palmer as Carole King was phenomenal, and Shad Hanley brought depth to Gerry's role. Martinez Napoleon, as the lead Drifter, had an absolutely amazing voice and stole every scene he was in. The entire cast was strong, the music was timeless, and the staff at Reagle were welcoming and professional. The show exceeded my expectations and was an unforgettable experience from start to finish!

The Reagle Theatre is a hidden gem a few miles out of downtown. I have been to the theater at least…read morea half a dozen times and every performance has been wonderful. For a small theater serving the greater Boston area they have fabulous performances. They put on some of the most historic plays, as well as some holiday plays and shows. It looks like the theater is in the back of a school however, the seating is somewhat comfortable.. I've actually been to a few of the opening day performances and once in a while, they have a spread in the front hallway where you can get to meet the performers and producers. This takes a very personal memorable experience. There is nothing like speaking to one of the actors right after the show.. parking is plentiful with a huge lot right outside the door. During intermission, they usually have concession set up with small items like ice cream, candy, and drinks. If you're into the theatre and want to see a well practice performance of a play that you like I think you'll be very happy if you came over to the Reagle. I definitely will attend many more performances here. FYI, all the seats are great so don't fret about taking one in the back. It's still not that far away from the stage. Oh, and let me just mention most of the performances I've been to there's a live orchestra in the pit right in front of the stage.. buy yourself a ticket. Have a great time.
