What we found interesting is that when they moved to their new space this past year, we were finally able to watch each dance session (which wasn't the case at their former studio). Our girls had their occasional "off days" as young children often times do. Yet the overt frustration and impatience on behalf of the staff became more and more apparent with each subsequent week. The tipping point is when one of our girls instructors (who happened to be the owner) literally raised her voice in anger and threatened not just our daughter, but any child that did not meet expectations. Specifically, any child whose shoelaces weren't properly tied (I wish I were exaggerating) were scolded and told laces will be cut off with a scissors if the parents don't do it themselves. Our child never wanted to go back after that day and we immediately withdrew her from the remaining calendar year. What's heartbreaking is, as a parent, you trust particular people with the wellbeing of your child (we did our research, we talked to other parents, etc) and despite a seemingly safe and trusting environment, Curio proved to just the opposite.

The staff and dancers welcome dancers from all levels and backgrounds. The open houses are worth checking out, so you can see what types of classes you are interested in taking. For now my favorite classes are the Hip Hop classes. I have a feeling as I explore Zenon more that will change. The people take dance seriously, but are also there just to dance and have a good time. He's completely heartbroken that his "costumes" look like clothes that he already has in his closet, and that he didn't get any of the extras that the girls got. The difference is night and day. Culture - The instructors at Lundstrum do a great job of instilling a culture of encouragement rather than competitiveness that filters down to the students. The older kids encourage and help the younger kids and everyone cheers for each other. Expertise - Every instructor is a trained professional in their field. Most of the younger instructors perform all around the Twin Cities and several instructors had careers on Broadway before working at Lundstrum. They challenge their students to really work on precision and technique and it really shows. My daughter's tap skills, for example, advanced more in her first year at Lundstrum than in four years at her previous studio. Scheduling - Group classes are scheduled so that age groups can have classes back-to-back. No driving to the dance studio five nights a week if your kid is taking six classes. This INCREDIBLY nice for busy families. Range of classes - If your kid loves the stage, it's not enough to just learn to dance, they have to do it all--singing, dancing, and acting. The main programs at Lundstrum do a great job of melding the three into a Broadway curriculum with expert instructors in each classroom. Clear costs - Unlike most dance studios, Lundstrum won't suprise you with a bunch of hidden costs. Many studios charge extra for approved rehearsal clothing, recital costumes, etc. In our daughter's last year at a different studio, we spent over $400 on costumes that she used once and then never wore again! Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form originating in Tamil Nadu a Southern state in India. It is one of the oldest of the classical dance forms in India and is usually accompanied by the classical music. It has its inspirations from the sculptures of the ancient temple of Chidambaram. It's mostly noted for its sculpturesque poses and the fan-like costumes of it's dancers. I'm actually not a Bharatanatyam dance, I've had over 10 years of dancing Kathak which is a more graceful and floaty style of dance from India. I was very fascinated by this dance studio and really wanted to take a class. I registered for the summer session, where I met with a diverse group of students, the age range of the class ranges from small kiddies to adults. In the non-air conditioned rooms, you learn the basic steps of Bharatanatyam, which uses a lot of core muscle balances. At the end of the hour long session, I felt as if I ran a marathon. It really is a great work out, and something unique at the same time. My teacher, Tamara is attentive, and gives you constructive feedback. It's a lot of fun learning from her. If you're interested in learning something new, or a great work out, you should give them a shot. They also preform in collaboration with other dance forms, which makes for a very creative experience.

We attended Circus Juventas' Blizzard show this week. I wasn't sure what to expect having only seen…read moreone Cirque du Soleil show. What I didn't expect this to be was a show put on by kids! WOW! Blizzard was a culmination of several Christmas stories using the setting of Santa's Workshop. Christmas play meets Cirque du Soleil. These kids are no joke! The acting, strength, and fearlessness of these kids is amazing! If you weren't sure it's worth going don't, go! Bring your family and support these talented kids. Looking forward to seeing more of these shows in the future.

It's amazing that kids are the performers - given the incredible feats of strength, discipline and flexibility. Tickets in advance are recommended. Over the 8 years, they've increased from $20 to $40. Tickets can be purchased online about a month in advance of the show. The big top is an amazing venue. Parking is a bit tricky so plan in advance. Extra bathrooms and porta potties are brought in for the events. Concessions and programs are available. The seats are bench with a cushioned pad. After a bit they are tough for the full performance. With intermission, it's a good three hour performance. We've always been blown away! Highly recommend and will continue to return.

The teachers are professional educators, dancers, and performers who are well trained, knowledgeable, and invested in their students' growth, both as dancers and as people. One of the things I appreciate most is the thoughtful structure and pedagogy of the program. My daughter has been trained in a way that truly prepares her for the future--her plans are to dance in college and to continue beyond. The instruction is serious and high-quality while still being encouraging and supportive. The studio also offers opportunities built into the program, including performances and audition workshops that help students gain real-world experience and confidence. Additionally, the Repertory program for the higher levels allows dancers to work with well known choreographers in multiple dance styles and perform in a professional atmosphere. While these opportunities are unique and come with high expectations, the environment remains non-competitive, inclusive, and encouraging, which creates a healthy and joyful place for kids to grow. As a discerning parent with a degree in dance, myself, I can honestly say this studio has been an incredible foundation for my daughter's dance journey. Our family has been part of the Ballare community for over a decade now. We have had dancers from…read morefundamental classes to adult and at every level we have been so impressed with the caliber of dance education. In addition to the phenomenal teachers, Ballare truly is a healthy community space for our kids and me. The atmosphere is positive and inclusive. As a therapist, it was extremely important to me that any participation in dance be body positive and focused on healthy movement, strength, and wellbeing rather than any particular size or dance aesthetic. In 10+ years, I have never once had pause that Ballare is not the place for us. Our eldest has made some of her closest friends within these studios and additionally has been mentored by adults we have grown to love and respect in our time here. We have watched them demonstrate tremendous care for our community during COVID, finding ways to keep kids dancing while also keeping them safe. We have watched them support kids transitioning into the fullness of themselves with loving acceptance. As dancers age, we have been impressed by the way in which constructive feedback is given, helping them develop to their fullest with compassionate honesty, which in our experience of youth sports is not always something that happens as well as it does here. As an adult without a dance background, these classes have been empowering, good for my body, soul, and spirit, allowing me space to try new challenges without shame.
