Understand when you buy you will have to endure tornadoes, 70mph winds and hail before a refund.

Starlight is a Kansas City institution and I've come here countless times for everything from…read morebroadway performances to big concerts and I have to say it's a really great big venue. To start with, what other venue in KC has ample FREE parking? I feel like 10 years ago this was common, but nowadays not only is parking often pricey, but it can be harder and harder to find. With Starlight located in Swope Park, they are able to share parking with the Zoo and if needed do overflow parking into the park itself. Worst case you're walking a bit. I love that I never have to worry about finding a spot. Now, as we've moved into the modern era Starlight has enacted some clear bag policies so you'll want to read up on that. I just brought my ID , a credit card, and my phone to simplify entry. Once inside you'll be treated to the nicest outdoor venue KC has to offer. The restrooms were renovated within the past few years and are really super nice. I remember back in the day they were worse for wear, but now they are all clean, well lit, and despite it being an outdoor venue, little to no bugs. The food options appear to be decent - we ate before arriving on our latest visit, but they had solid beers available for purchase, and several bar areas which made lines move quickly. I'll finally add that you will have a vastly different experience on if you get a ticket way at the top or one down in orchestra. Of course the orchestra tickets are incredible and IMO worth the cost since Starlight keeps prices pretty fair, but I love that since it's so big and they have such far away seats, if you just want to enjoy music under the stars you can still do that here for sometimes as cheap as $30 a seat. Overall, I love this venue - especially on a nice KC night it really can't be beat if you have good seats.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. I call it the…read moreKansas Opera House :). This massive performing arts center is like a State pride for Kansas City, Missouri. It reminded me of the famed Opera House in Australia, except that this one is at a crossroad, not near any sort of water body, and much closer to home in US !  Kansas , Missouri has been historically known for its jazz, classical music and theatre. It has this typical theatrical staging for an auditorium with all the seats facing the same way towards the stage, which is framed by an arch- this setting also has a fancy name - its called  Proscenium Arch ( pruh-see-ni-um - I had to ask google how to pronounce it ...lol)It is a non-profit theatre !!!!  Wow! Built to promote dance, opera, music , it is perfect for the city to live up to its reputation of being widely recognized destination for vibrant and colorful arts. It has two big halls interconnected with a foyer, its simply impressively massive and absolutely stunning architecture.  I read from the brochure that Acoustical considerations factored into every architectural decision of the building, right from the shape of the hall to the grain of the wood paneling. And also that it seats 1600 guests at a time. Located at the heart of downtown Kansas on 16th and Broadway, it is near the  city's Power & Light District, the T-Mobile Center and the Crossroads Arts District with plenty of parking within, but if you don't want to get stuck after a performance, it is better to take a cab here.

KCMPT is an African American theatre company and puts on thought provoking pieces. JOB also has many other local groups that stage productions there ( music, dance, spoken word... ). The theater is open seating, but it's "in the round." The seating is on risers around the stage, so there isn't a bad view in the house! The theater is in Penn Valley park, just north of Indigo Wild. There is a parking lot on the south side of the building.

It's one of my favorite plays. With a cast of two, it's a big load for the actors. They were wonderful!! Both of them were lovely and did this fine work great justice. Wednesday and Thursday are "Community Pricing" nights so the tickets are $10 cheaper. That's great on the wallet. The theater is very nice and professional. The set was fantastic! Wardrobe and makeup were spot on. I am very impressed and grateful I made it to see this show before the end of the run.

Usually it's a lot of live music, but I went to 2 one-man shows during Fringe Fest that were super fun! You can enter via the door from the parking lot behind Westport Flea Market, and it's off to the left. Plenty of parking in the lot! Or you can enter from a door in the Flea restaurant. There's a bar in the Bowery and a bathroom by the Bowery entrance. A lot of the events will let you bring food into shows too, so definitely grab a burger and curly fries before heading in. The bar is located in a weird spot, I have to say. It's like right next to the stage. So if you're at a live music show, it's really convenient. But if you are at a theater production, it's annoying to have people walking across your view to the bar if it's open during the show. They also kind of need to work on their soundproofing a little bit. For some reason, they have a lot of late night events on Sunday nights, and I can hear the music in my apartment, which is on the other side of the parking lot. I'm pretty chill with noise since I signed up to live in Westport, but on Sunday nights, it's not ideal to be hearing the lyrics of songs in my room at 11 pm.

I attended a Fringe Fest event here at 9:30pm on a Friday night. The production was excellent -…read moreAustralian playwright / comedian / story-teller Jon Bennett delivered an hour of heartbreak and hilarity in his one man piece - "Fire in the Meth Lab". I have no issues with the space itself. With room for about 50, the stage is always close by and sound and lighting was great. The space is in the back part of the Westport Flea Market. My biggest complaint, and it is a big one; why in the hell do you have a bar that is less than 10 feet from the stage and 3 feet from my seat and allow it to be open during performances? Seriously??!! All throughout the performance I was distracted from the performance by audience members buying a drink. The loudest person in those transactions was the bartender! With Mr. Bennett's Australian accent and rapid delivery, the PAYING members of the audience really needed to focus clearly on the stage, not a bartender reciting what beers are available. Move the bar outside the performance area or at least install a heavy curtain for sound muffling. if you are going to run a performance hall, have some respect for the artist and audience!

The seating is comfy and lights and sound were great. I attended "Plume" from local playwright Mike Rice as part of the KC Fringe Festival 2022 on it's opening night. A 5 actor ensemble that was a no holds barred 45 minutes of intense drama featuring adult language and violence - Excellent! Keep the kids at home! Besides annually co-hosting Fringe Festival performances City Stage is also the current home for Theater for Young America and KC Actors Theater.

In 2021 it moved to east Brookside on the west side of Troost. Arts Asylum produces It's own productions as well as a venue for KC Finge Festival and several other groups. I love that they have 2 theater spaces so they are able to adapt the room to the show. The concessions feature alcohol, coffee, and non alcohol options. Parking is available in the lot north adjacent, the lot south of the structure, behind 39th and Main, or on Baltimore, one block West. Do not park on main street. The street car runs right in front.

Because the theater offers top notch entertainment (they advertise that they produce "the hippest BoldNewPlays"). But it's more than that. Often the top notch entertainment bit is all you can ask for when going to the theater. Since childhood, I've been going to see many a Broadway Play that cost well over 200 dollars a ticket (some are up to 400 dollars a ticket. I don't lie!) and despite my petite stature (I'm freaking SHORT), I feel absolutely cramped and miserable in a seat that if it were on an airplane, at least it would be soon be spitting me out in a foreign land at those prices! I know, I know. Theater is expensive. Many theaters are old and that is part of the charm. The history, right? Of course. I'm a sucker for all of that, too, don't get me wrong. The theater in which I saw Grey Gardens the Musical offers spacious, comfortable seating in an extremely intimate environment. It's a modern theater, sure, but I was able to stretch my legs out, cross them even, and shift in my seat (OK, I'm restless when sitting for more than an hour), while enjoying the show. I believe there isn't a bad seat in the house. Grey Gardens blew me away. The sound was absolutely stellar and the performances were perfection. Everyone agreed that Drew and Jessica were on point with their GG performances. The actresses last night were just as good. I am not exaggerating. Blew. Me. Away. As Big Edie would say, "You CAN have your cake and eat it, too, in this life." Thank you, Unicorn for existing and making a quality theater experience a sure thing in Kansas City.
