And beings this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE DIVE, I had to add it here. So the place is called . . . . THE MOONSHINE GULCH SALOON Go up the road in Hill City next to the Exxon gas station (the road might be called Deerfield Road?) and head for Rochford, a tiny old town nestled in the mountains. I'd ask for directions at the gas station here. It's about 20 minutes up this road from Hill City. This place ROCKS as the picture will show you. Betsy, the owner, will take you under her wing and tell ya a couple of stories if she's not busy. She makes her own french fries, and they're great, but the burgers are on the super small side. You don't go here for food. Unless it's her homemade fries. You go here for brews and to hear a yarn or two. This place is in the dictionary for the words "local color." One time I was here, there were two 80 year old banjo players playing their cute little hearts out and one of them was blind. Another time, I found Betsy nursing a stray baby deer from a bottle in front of the bar. Another time, she had a milk cow tied up next to the saloon. The place is a cross between old west stuff, kind of dumpy, yet fun. There's so much stuff nailed on the walls and on the ceiling it would take several hours to see everything. The BEST part, is to ride on your bike here when they do the annual Michelson Trail Bicycle Ride. Plan it so you'll finish up at this place and have a few brews. The clientele varies WILDLY from little old men, to bikers, to weird toothless yokels, to clowns--literally, to rich yuppies stopping by for the "quaint factor." Warning: if you do not like dives or drinking or funkiness or trippy people, or old things, you will not like this joint.

Our guide was great and gave very descriptive events of the times and the working ways of the ladies of the night! I liked learning how the industry started in Deadwood and the many other contributions the ladies provided to the community as a whole. I highly recommend visiting.

We were wandering around town on a Saturday night and were thrilled to come across Kodiak's. We loaded up our cards and shot hoops and rolled skee-balls to our hearts' content. We got really into the Jurassic Park dinosaur shooter and I raced over to the counter to load up my card for another play. The owner mentioned she would load my card for free because she had just cashed out. I asked when they closed and it turned out we were 5 minutes past but she said "it's not a big deal at all!" and reassured me it was fine to finish our game. We went out to cash out our tickets and ended up talking to the owner for at least 20 minutes about how she ended up in South Dakota, and she was a riot!! We had a blast and would definitely come back.

I loved the story how Tom the owner took out the Iowa car in memory of a dear friend because the car was still slotted to race after the owner had passed away. Tom and his Pitt crew broke three land speed records; but chose to put the owners name on the records being that it was his car. Randall, also jerked a few tears when he told us the surprise appearance by Tom's son showed up at his football game he was coaching in uniform. Tom's son had just returned from a hard fought tour in Afghanistan with 10th special forces group. The story was warming and he even let us start the car! Thanks again Randall for the tour, and great idea Tom to attach a tangible story to your love for cars.

Looking into dining room, 3 maybe 4 tables seated, rest are empty. My odds are good! "Can we have dinner?" I asked with a smile. - Do you have a reservation? - Sorry we don't. "Ahh, sorry we are fully booked." At first I thought he was joking, you know lifting the mood a bit. Nope, dead serious- sorry we are booked. I look at him, look over his shoulder into empty dining room, back at him. - Nothing? - You can have food at the bar on second floor, but we are booked up here. "We are here through tomorrow, you have anything for tomorrow early?" - Sorry, fully booked. You need to make reservations months in advance. (I should mention, we had a gift card for this place, we live in CA, go to Sturgis every year for bike rally, so someone got us a gift card for this place.) I remember being in Sturgis in 2019 and 2020 during covid shutdown, all the restaurants were appreciating business we brought in. Well, that was then, this is now. We are booked he said with an empty dining room behind him. Went to a different casino, they too were booked and no walk ins but the difference was that second casino restaurant was proper booked, every table was full. So went to a third casino and had a steak there. I get it, you are booked, but with 75% empty dining room that just sounds like you are not interested. Anyways, it sounds like a lovely place and very popular so be sure to book in advance. For us- we gona skip it next year.
