Arthur Murray Dance Studio - 100 years of excellence!

    Arthur Murray Dance Studio

This studio has the identical owners as to the other review I posted. I've been here twice, and…read morethey had a few of the same instructors at both studios. This studio is divided in two by the staircase that comes up through the level below to their main entrance. This significantly cuts into the floor space, leaving it more like a small studio with two separate rooms. This can be a good thing if you're the only lesson going on, but if you aren't... be prepared to experience what it's like navigating a crowded dance floor. Both good and bad components to it. Compared to the Ridgewood, NJ location, the floor here is in much better condition. I'm not sure why Ridgewood doesn't have as nice of a floor. Bad investment perhaps? Either way, the floor of this studio is beautiful. The sound system is OK, but it's more than adequate. Studio policy and politics, like all Arthur Murray studios, is quite frankly absolutely insane. Be prepared during your lesson to get interrogated to reveal your innermost secrets which will later be used against you when they try to sell you a lesson package worth 150-170 dollars per 45 minute lesson. If you have the money for paying way over the market rate for ballroom dance lessons, especially from relative amateurs, go right ahead. Better instructors can be had elsewhere for far less money. If you're looking to dance competitively, be wary of tons of red tape and exorbitantly expensive entry fees. In a nutshell this really isn't much of a dance school, but an expensive social club. Some of the instructors are great, and it's apparent right away which ones really work on their dancing abilities to really excel. It isn't worth the prices that they charge, however. I'll give them a 3 because I'm feeling nice. If i were crankier, it would be a 2.

Denville Dance floor - very nice as far as the feel of the floor under your feet. However its…read moreextremely small & is divided into (2) somewhat pseudo rooms by a 3/4 wall. When I was there the staff was nice - however it was clear none of it was genuine; and the intent was to make you feel so comfortable that you didn't mind spending the absurd amount of money they were asking you for, to "invest in yourself" *rolls eyes* Coming from a dance background it was clear some of the "instructors" were quite literally people who not only had almost no actual dance training, but people who came in off the street looking for a job & were essentially being trained the same time as new students! Practice parties: A joke. There is barely enough room at this studio to host a half decent super bowl party. The limit of smooth dances on the playlist... coincidence? These typically turned into extremely small group classes led by one of the most inexperienced teachers (and studio manager if I recall correctly) Staff Turn Over: Common occurrence. Sign of poor management? Sing of poor work atmosphere? Sign of poor pay? All of the above? The owners of this studio own all of the north jersey studios so we can only assume the same problems exist internally at the other locations. Not all Arthur Murray studios are in a failing state. I suggest if you're looking to learn how to social dance and want to check out an Arthur Murray, check out a few locations. The feel and atmosphere of where you're dancing is just as important as what you're learning. An over all experience. If you're looking to learn how to dance at a competition level/professional level, check out Fred Astaire.

There isn't a receptionist to welcome you or take your registration so there is a small lack of professionalism.now that we have established that, let's discuss the positives: Instructors that actually care about you and your child. They are patient and will work with you. The schedule is very flexible and it is hard to beat the student to instructor ratio. We went to the local YMCA for swim lessons and enjoyed that experience, but we also enjoyed the KimSwim experience as well. Their pool is legit and makes you feel as if you are in on some elite backyard training program. Bottom line: check it out and don't be put off by the setup. You or your child will enjoy the experience (no matter how humid that room is).

I made a huge mistake by paying to the owner's wife directly. No receipt. I went for 3 classes and I absolutely loved it. But then the owner cancelled lessons due to " family circumstances ". He promised to make up for those classes, but disappeared completely. I called and left messages, I texted, reached out in social media. No response. I will report him to a business bureau, but I did lose money. Very disappointing and unprofessional!

Updated 7/18/2016 It…read moreis hard to fathom that I post a negative review and all of a sudden people post good reviews. It's comical at best and clearly shows guilt. There has not been a review of this place in years. I am not spewing lies I am simply stating my experience. Lynn, the owner, has put too many things in writing to dispute the facts. She can clearly use her mouth to spread lies but my attorney and I have all the written words from her. She wrote to me she knew I was leaving the studio for weeks so she treated my daughter poorly in class for that duration and not only did she throw my child out of dance she now refuses to return the monies which are mine and she has so stated in writing they are mine. She wants a settlement agreement. A settlement agreement? What has she given me? Nothing - not even the money she owes me. It's criminal. She is a common thief who wishes for me not to speak ill of what she has done. Her actions are heinous. How can I not warn others? She decided to toss my child two weeks before recital because I said the truth that the studio is filthy and smells of sewage. The reality is she knew we were leaving and wanted to make my child's experience sour. Her actions were retaliatory for me making a decision not return the following year. Shame shame on you Ms Lynn. I had decided many months ago to leave the studio next year. I, as a customer, fulfilled my obligation and would have never reneged on a commitment for the year. What kind of integrity would it show not to fulfill a commitment? Clearly not the role model I want my child to grow up with. She did not like what I had to say .... She never approached me..... She never asked why...... She simply does not meet her contractual obligations. She made a huge error to put it in writing that she knew we were leaving and she made a list of all the monies she owed to me. First she robbed my daughter of a good dance experience than she robbed me of my money. I have watched Lynn discipline children and punish children as she fits without consulting the parent. She threw another child out of the studio just a few short days after my child. She is a wild card. Teachers are leaving....students are leaving and a lot of kids are dancing elsewhere. You are the company you keep. Word of mouth is a powerful tool. Original review I found this dance studio to be down trodden, filthy and antiquated. I have heard that the health department made a recent visit. I do not feel this studio promotes a professional atmosphere. We decided to leave and I wish we did it sooner.
