Depending on what you want out of your gym, if you've got a clean, friendly and well equipped space you're going alright--this is Fernwood. It's quite a big gym, there several separate areas including a cardio room, weights room with extra cardio equipment, group fitness space and a cycle room. There are several classes to choose from with a mix of Les Mills classics like Pump, CX Worx, Body Attack, Combat and Balance, as well as their own mix of classes: Swiss ball, boot camp, yoga, reformer Pilates, step, core and cycle classes to name a few. Majority of classes are between nine and five, obviously to suit the mummy demographic, it would be nice to see a better variety of classes around 6am and 6pm. The facilities are good, probably a little tired looking if anything. The change room is huge, with several showers, steam room and sauna. If you're going out post-workout there's deodorant, hair dryers and several other nice touches you might need to get ready. Weekday morning they provide breakfast basics including toast, cereal, tea and coffee, there's also a fridge if you prefer to take your own to eat before you dash off to work. Staff are friendly and helpful, exactly the kind of people you need welcoming you. The trainers are great too, I've not come across a trainer or instructor who wasn't having a great time and doing their best to make you bust your butt.

There are spacious surroundings with a lot of lounging area, although there is a distinct lack of grass. The pool is mostly clean and chlorine levels are well maintained. The spa is large enough for eight and it can get busy in the sauna and steam room. Lap swimmers mostly use the pool year round (thanks to the solar heating, this is easily possible in winter too), but in the warmer months hoards of people flock the pool, especially on weekends. On Sunday afternoons in summer, live bands play and the party atmosphere is contagious. Open since 1908, there are numerous photos and plaques to provide some history. Also there are huge cautions in Italian, to remind you of the history of Fitzroy.

There is a beautifully clean 50m, 8 lane pool that is indoors & heated year round. The lap lane availability is conveniently accessible online and is updated weekly. There are always a mixture of lane speed allocations (fast, medium, slow and aqua play) to ensure that lap swimmers are not disturbed by those just "playing" or "paddling". There is also a sauna, spa and steam room available. The staff at reception are always warm and friendly. Overall, it's a great local pool for my swimming training! It should also be noted that there is a full gym with group classes and a children's pool for swimming lessons. There are plenty of change rooms, showers and toilets. Check it out if you are looking for a nice clean local pool this summer (or winter - it's heated so no excuses)!

The gym is well equipped with a large variety of machines, weights, balls and mats and many of each too. I rarely had to wait and if I asked (nicely!), other members would be willing to share too. Staff would always say hi and remind you to do reassessments. They were never pushy but motivating and empathetic. I have done at least 5 assessments there with multiple staff and they were all keen to listen and work with your skill level and goals. I've been at 6am, 3pm, 7pm and random days and staff are always welcoming and the members are 98% all friendly and non-judgemental too. I haven't been to the classes but there are tons to choose from but I've been to the pool a few times and I've always had a great swim with minimal people in the change room and maybe 1-2 other people in the swimming lanes. Nice whirlpool/spa area too that is open and relaxing. Easy to get to, fun contests to enter the more you go, tons of parking, helpful staff in the building if you have questions or need to suspend your license, cheapest yoga mat EVER ($15!!), multiple change rooms and community market every Saturday just outside the building too from 8am - 1pm :) While the price is much more than what I've paid at home in Vancouver, I think this was a great value for what I paid here - I would, and have already, recommend this fitness facility to anyone!

This means that between 4 and 7, the times when most people finishing class and going home would really like a swim, lanes are very hard to come by. The best times to swim without the rugrats are when the schools aren't there - around 9-10, 2 or very early in the morning. This pool offers a water women program (a women only swimming time), so women can feel safe coming in and swimming or learning to swim. The teaching staff are great, really friendly and patient, and the pool offers comprehensive learn to swim program - and are one of the few pools that I know of to offer adult swim classes. As a uni student, I like that I can go for a splash to clear my head before class, and as far as uni facilities go, I'm definitely a fan. However the changing rooms are really bad, not cleaned enough. Or ever. I take thongs and scrub my feet when I get home. Don't leave your wallet there, either, there are a lot of thefts.

I'm training here at the moment thanks to a scoopon deal, and I'm seriously considering joining up for the year. The location is very easy to get to, and there are parking spaces just outside the member's door (back door). Upon entering, I was shocked at how large the place was; from the outside you would think it was just a small room with a couple of mirrors and equipment. It's actually a really nice set up, the gym feels wide and open thanks to the second story being more of an indoor balcony- allowing you to be on the lower level and enjoy the high ceiling. The upstairs area consists your cardio equipment- all equipment is new and state-of-the-art, with inbuilt personal televisions. The down stairs area offers resistance machines, boxing area and free weights/ weights area. This is a great clean gym that is small compared to the likes of fitness first. However it is large enough to workout, but small enough to feel community based. The only downside is their lack of lockers. They have shelves where you can store your belongings, however it's not locked and anyone could go through your bag. This doesn't really bother me though as it is still technically a 'small' gym, and there are only ever a handful of people inside at the anytime.

Go there if you will but be aware of their antics. I provided this group with a medical certificate saying this gym was not fit for my purpose. I have been harassed by debit companies and have now received a letter threatening me with court proceedings. I point out that the best level of instruction I received was by a student. My joints ached from attempting to shift bolts in to position. I had pain from my sacrum to knee for six months following my last attendance. Staff turned their backs when I called for support. And, they are hounding me during COVID for back fees. I am 66 years old. This company did nothing to assess suitability and fitness prior to wheedling money from me. There grins are dark with money lust and betrayal.

The cost of lessons are less than anywhere else locally and the staff to swimmer ratios are small. As an ex-swimmer and consequently being very fussy about technique and swimming formulas I couldn't be happier with their style of teaching. Would highly recommend this swim school.

Very small pool…read morewith lots of kids squashed in together trying to do lessons with lots of noise and swim instructors that were young and had no qualifications. I felt that my kids were just a head count for how many kids in the pool and it was more about collect your money as you go through the doors. I will look around for swim school that has some indivdual learning in small groups with kids generally around same age group for swimming lessons. Oh well at least I know what not to look for next time.

Here you can take up one of many treatments ranging from half hour express treatments to an indulgent full day's stay. South Pacific Health Club have personal training available as well as group fitness classes. The great thing is they also offer a free trial voucher on their website where you can visit the gym, speak to the trainers and get a feel for the environment. I always find it worthwhile doing this if you are looking to start up a new gym membership, that way you know exactly what your getting for your money and you can speak with the staff one on one.
