Their students range from age 3-76! It's never too late. Tucked in downtown Hopkins, this studio is well-worth the commute from where I live. Plenty of free parking. Near many businesses so you can go shopping or go to a restaurant while you're waiting for your kid.

Classes at Children's Theater, MacPhail, The Little Gym, Minneapolis and Edina Parks and Rec etc... Bottom line = not everyone has the skills to teach this age group. In our experience, HOD does not have the ability to teach this age group. We attended one class. There is a class for older kids going on at the same time and there is no acoustical separation between studios. They have a flimsy sliding wall separating the two spaces. This is not a good set up for any age group, but particularly 3-year-olds. Also, the teacher told my 3-year-old he was going to write him up. He did this because that was the best he could do with this age group. My son sometimes does not listen and has been in numerous classes as mentioned above - not one of those places has EVER said anything like that before to him. That they would give him a warning and write him up? Needless to say, we never returned. And of course they have a no money back policy (its a fine print thing). Many other places (listed above) have a prorated refund policy which I applaud.

During class, they also dole out individual attention and take the time to be encouraging with a gentle nudge toward better form or a compliment. I enjoy the mix of barre, yoga and HIIT classes. I found them because I asked a friend who loves dance where the best place was for beginner level hip hop and then grabbed an unlimited membership during a deal. Best choice I've made for my health in 2019. Straightline is a great place to meet new friends, and I do exactly that almost every single time I attend a class. Every class I take is challenging but modifiable. The variety is great. Even though I came for hip hop, I love 305 Fitness (think cardio clubbing), yoga, piloxing (pilates and boxing!!!!!), pilates and barre, YOU NAME IT. The app to sign up the classes is super easy to navigate and gives you an option to add the appointment to your calendar when you sign up. Love that. The studio is also very active on social media and responds to any questions in a timely manner. I am here at least 3 times a week and tell anyone I can how great it is. Join their email list to be in the know for their events and special offerings - worth it even without a 'deal!' This community gives me something to look forward to throughout the day when normally in the winter I'd stay home, holed up in the dark. I'm not saying Straightline is curing my seasonal depression (hello Minnesota winter) but it certainly helps!! The two things that I'd change: the bathrooms are downstairs and there's nowhere to shower after a sweaty class. Literally the only two downfalls of this studio. Zenon is a dancers hidden gem located in Minneapolis. I discovered it last winter and have only…read morebeen there a couple times. I now live in the cities so I plan on becoming a regular. The staff and dancers welcome dancers from all levels and backgrounds. The open houses are worth checking out, so you can see what types of classes you are interested in taking. For now my favorite classes are the Hip Hop classes. I have a feeling as I explore Zenon more that will change. The people take dance seriously, but are also there just to dance and have a good time. So girls and guys, if you are new or already know the cities but you are looking for a place to dance - Check out Zenon.

Many dance schools have inappropriate choreography for their younger dancers. Not Curio. Their choreography is appropriate/top notch and their instruction allows each dancer to progress and perform at their personal best. The education and skill of the instructors is phenomenal. What we found interesting is that when they moved to their new space this past year, we were finally able to watch each dance session (which wasn't the case at their former studio). Our girls had their occasional "off days" as young children often times do. Yet the overt frustration and impatience on behalf of the staff became more and more apparent with each subsequent week. The tipping point is when one of our girls instructors (who happened to be the owner) literally raised her voice in anger and threatened not just our daughter, but any child that did not meet expectations. Specifically, any child whose shoelaces weren't properly tied (I wish I were exaggerating) were scolded and told laces will be cut off with a scissors if the parents don't do it themselves. Our child never wanted to go back after that day and we immediately withdrew her from the remaining calendar year. What's heartbreaking is, as a parent, you trust particular people with the wellbeing of your child (we did our research, we talked to other parents, etc) and despite a seemingly safe and trusting environment, Curio proved to just the opposite.
