First off, I had a great (partial) haircut. I wanted to be clear on that. My review is more about the experience and the value for the price. I have never been to a barber before, but have been struggling to find someone to cut a feminine short haircut. This place seemed to fit my needs. I called to make an appointment as I was not familiar with barber terms and didn't know which scenario or which person fitted my needs and availability. The person I spoke with scheduled me with Cassie (after they inquired what kind of cut I was looking for). The place is off court and I knew parking might take some time consideration, which I factored in. I also saw a review on Google when a client complained about being late to an appointment and a response from the owner to that, which I agreed with. The space is small! For me, uncomfortably small. Everyone was in everyone's space and not much room for movement. No one acknowledged me when I came in, so I just took a seat and waited on the couch. My person was running behind and apologized for that. Something that bothered me was that they did not sweep up between clients. It came my turn and I had to awkwardly climb into the chair. I am used to a salon chair where it's at a lower level and they pump the seat up to the necessary height. I showed Cassie photos of what I was looking for in a cut and she made some suggestions and off we went. I don't know exaxtly how long it took as the other person was running late, but I would guestimate 20 minutes. This being my first barber experience ever (possibly my last), I found the experience lacking. I wasn't offered a drink, I didn't get a shampoo, she was very rough with my ears when shaving around them and the back of my neck felt a bit raw from all the shaving with the electric razor. Maybe this is common? I have nothing to compare it to. She did not cut the top hair at all (in hind site, it needed weight taken out). I go to pay and she tells me she is cash only. Ummmmm......ok.......that's fine and all, but I don't carry cash on me. She offered that I use one of those janky ATMs sitting in the corner of the restaurant across the hall. I was not happy and being in such close proximity to everyone else in the room, I didn't feel comfortable saying something. So? $50 + for the haircut and $6 in ATM fees was definitely not worth the experience. I noticed that other barbers had an electronic device to take payments, so apparently they each have their own payment system? The person I spoke to on the phone should have told me it is cash only and I would have planned accordingly and saved myself $6 on fees. Again, great (partial) haircut, however this barber shop is not for me. I have received a way better experience at many salons for the same price and even less. This partial cut was way overpriced. I'm a road warrior & therefore always looking for a good barber while out on the road. I went through Des Moines, IA last year & happened upon this AMAZING barbershop!!! Not only does it have an ultra cool vibe & decor, but the ladies that work their are truly hair magicians!!! The first time I had the honor of getting a cut from Robin (not sure in the spelling or if she's still there, but still got a great cut, so that's the important part). This time I was blessed to get the owner of this gem; Riva; and BOY WAS I LUCKY!!! I'm being 100% honest when I say that it's one of the best haircuts I've received in my entire life!!! I live in NYC & if I had the finances to do so, I'd ONLY get my haircut by Riva...she's just that good!!! I was in Des Moines for one night for a surgery at the Des Moines VA hospital. I needed a haircut. I got a simple military fade. It took maybe 20 minutes and the lady charged me $58!!! Had I known it would be so ridiculously expensive for the most basic of haircuts, I never would have gone here. Certainly never will be going here again! Recommend to absolutely no one! read more

Jaime did an amazing job! I wasn't aware that this Barbershop was run by all women, and I LOVE that aspect of it. Locally owned and ran by some beautiful ladies. They weren't afraid to tell it like it is, or being themselves, making it an enjoyable atmosphere. I was welcomed in a quickly offered a beverage (IPA), along with every other guest that happened to come through the door as well, even their friends were offered. Lots of laughs all around and joking from the ladies which made it VERY relaxing. I honestly thought I was going to fall asleep in the chair. Jaime was SUPER gentle with my hair cut. I have had my sides and back done before where I've been nicked or it was rough at salons and I didn't feel a thing. I also appreciated the fact that she took in account my concern for my curls and allowing that extra length just in case the bounce/scrunched up a bunch. Again I've been to places that haven't and I left crying. If you want to support a local business and better yet some lovely ladies then I strongly suggest coming here! read more

Been here a couple times. One, I was just there with a friend and the other I actually got my haircut. The place is right in the heart of Court Avenue District so it's perfect for after your fresh cut, get a drink at some local restaurant or bar. The aesthetics of the place looks like a really tiny barber place. I believe there are only 3 stations. Has an old and new feel to it with a nice waiting couch and a pretty chandelier. The one great thing is that they will offer you up a beer while you wait or sitting in the chair. How could you seriously lose with that kind of service? The feel is very barbershop so get ready for people to completely BS with each other and some languages to be said. You have to know what you're getting into and you gotta just throw them back at them if you can. It's more than just getting your haircut there, it's the whole experience that makes it great but my haircut did look great at the end of it all so be prepared to look fly, slick, fresh, fleek... whatever these kids are using now these days. It's an unhappy place, I encourage you to consider Paramount Barbering a few streets over. I came on the MLK weekend but was turned away after running 9 minutes late. While I recognize they need to run the business and 9min is nearly a third of the session, it's the unfriendly attitude from staff that surprised me. Despite my arriving within 10 min grace period, the staff literally argued with me about losing money on my session and unwilling to accommodate. Moreover, I was told the barber lost her session but in fact the barber had an opening right after me (that was previously offered to me) so the delay wouldn't have been an issue. It looks like the owner just wanted to close early on the holiday. Running a small business is often great because customers benefit. This one is an exception. Look elsewhere for good customer service. read more

Visited on 9/2/2017 and 8/12/2017, got a cut from Riva. There are five parameters I evaluate when I get my hair cut, on a 1-10 scale. 1. Punctuality - 10/10. Made appointment, started right on the dot and ended right on the dot. 2. Quality - 9/10. Right in downtown, with lots of natural lighting. Slightly messy, but nothing too difficult. Apparently there is beer, but I definitely was not aware of that. 3. Quality of service - 6/10. Riva is sometimes a little unnecessarily rough and quick, and it shows in the results. 4. Quality of cut - 4/10. This is the part that irks me: my first cut was surprisingly good - fade was to the appropriate level, top was left nice and clean; overall a good 8/10 cut. The second was abjectly terrible: I asked for the EXACT SAME cut as the first, and what I got was nothing even close to what I had received the first time. Sides were disconnected way too high (to the point where I think I will need to grow out that segment for months), and back was taken up so high it quite frankly looks ridiculous from the back. The only reason this part receives 4/10 would be because the first time it was remarkably good; otherwise it would be a 1/10. 5. Price/quality ratio - 2/10. This much variability in the exact same cut is something I would expect out of Supercuts, and not someone who charges $30 for a cut. Overall: I have no idea how the same cut can have so much variation, but apparently it can happen here. Do not recommend, unless you love surprises and you absolutely need a haircut as fast as possible. read more
