I love how tucked away in the country side it is down lots of twisty thin country lanes. I actually like that it is a ruin. Yes it would be great if it was whole. The castle has an ample parking area compared to the one at Dartmouth, and get this: there's no charge! Located next to the castle is a little cafe and gift shop where you will pay for your entry fee and pick up an audio guide. This castle is reportedly haunted, and I did have one very odd experience. Upon entering the castle I felt as though someone had pressed their lips up to my ear and blew hard. It was a bit shocking, but I figured it was probably just a change in the air or wind from the entrance. The castle was originally owned by the Pomeroy family and later by the Seymour family. Although it is mostly ruins, it was interesting to hear the stories of ghosts and how the various rooms were used for entertainment or banquets. For more information, you can search the net as I vaguely recall the details. The best part about this castle is that the fee for entrance was cheap...I don't recall exactly, but I think it was about 4 pounds.

It has been called The Priest's House, suggesting a link with the church, but it may have been built as the residence of a prosperous local tradesman. The ground floor of the house contains a dining room and a large vaulted hall that would have been used for entertaining guests, while the first floor contains a gallery and three bedchambers. The kitchen was an outbuilding that exists today only as a few ruined walls, and there is a small garden adjacent to the house. Mrs Ada Frances Jennings bequeathed the house to the nation in 1960, together with a sum of money for its repair. The stone and plasterwork have been extensively renovated, although many of the original oak beams and carvings can still be seen. Probably built to keep the army high profile and using money - but it inspires the imagination. The 19th century army comes to life, there are passageways and tunnels to explore, cannons to climb on and a huge parade ground to drill your kids on. A grand and interesting place to run around in and while away an afternoon.

The museum is situated on Fore St and I must warn you it is about half way up quite a steep hill! A room is dedicated to Charles Babbage, probably the most famous person from Totnes. Babbage invented the first computer and children will be interested in how the computer revolution started. He was educaed at Totnes Grammar School, the old school is situated further down the hill. There are other collections at the museum covering a variety of periods, Saxon, Elizabethan and Victorian to name a few. The museum is a very interesting place to visit.
