Totnes is an Elizabethan town and the museum is in a lovely Elizabethan Merchants house which is believed to date from 1575. The museum is situated on Fore St and I must warn you it is about half way up quite a steep hill!
A room is dedicated to Charles Babbage, probably the most famous person from Totnes. Babbage invented the first computer and children will be interested in how the computer revolution started. He was educaed at Totnes Grammar School, the old school is situated further down the hill.
There are other collections at the museum covering a variety of periods, Saxon, Elizabethan and Victorian to name a few.
The museum is a very interesting place to visit. read more
