Seagulls stalk boats and screech in excitement as they toss fish to the surface. You barely hear the sounds of the city in this neighborhood, just the distant cackling of an old barge trudging upriver or the grinding of diesel tractor engines passing from one cornfield to the next. So to find this cafe was like stumbling upon an oasis of alternativeness in the middle of conservative farmland. This 'Road Cafe' belongs in the Schanzenviertel and seems exotic and dislocated here. The menu was limited to simple things like pasta, pizza, grilled sandwiches, ice cream, bottled beer and soda pops. They are probably the only place in this neighborhood to offer Hamburg-brewed Fritz Cola. Prices were pretty cheap. There are four sections to choose from: the quiet, enclosed beer garden in the back, the beach to the north complete with sand and Strandkorb, the louder front porch facing the street and a small indoor lounge with couches. There's a cigarette machine for late evenings when the gas station next door closes. The cafe is far from perfect in appearance. The proper American English name would be 'Roadside Cafe' not 'Road Cafe'. It looks like they are going for an American biker feel with Harley Davidson signs, a confederate flag flying and the owner inked nearly from head to toe. Yet, the owners have kids that run around the cafe. There's an electronic dart board, juke box filled with CDs from the 80s, children's books and a box of toys for small children. So for me, it's confusing which age range they're targeting. It's also hard to figure out if they are trying to encourage neighborhood regulars or attract the city dwellers that frequent us on sunny summer days showing off their luxury antique autos. Regardless, the lack of perfectionism and the obvious intention to make everyone happy successfully creates a casual, laid-back, everyone-is-welcome atmosphere where you don't feel judged.

Minimalist interior, Japanese staff, Japanese guests, and very tasty Japanese food that is worth every cent. I had the seafood salat as a starter and a sushi and sashimi mix for my main. Super fresh fish, very tasty and nicely textured rice (which is really important for good sushi), and good service. I'll definitely come back for some Udong noodles and some grilled dishes.

The waitress will give you a tablet and explain how it works. Basically you can order 5 plates at a time every 10 min or so. You pick anything in the AYCE menu tablet and they will bring it to you. They have a variety of rolls, temakis, "ramen", noodles, salads, rice, gyozas, tempura, ducks, fries and chicken wings (??) The nigiri however was disappointing, the salmon on top was very thin. The menu does not contain sashimi And you can order it for 2€ (comes with 4 pieces). I ordered just to see if they would come thicker but they were pretty thin as well. All dishes containing salmon or tuna, come with a tiny tiny portion of it. The dessert was a tasty surprise, a tiny piece of almond cake, a coconut panna cotta with caramel and 2 scoops of ice cream (green tea and black sesame). It was delicious!!! They will give you a card and stamp it for every 10€ you spend. Once all the stamps are completed, you get a 15€ discount.

This place is certainly not cheap and lunch for two with two courses and mineral water was around €80. I think you pay for the view here which many of the restaurants in the area do not have. I would come back here for the seafood but will explore loads of other places nearby also, that serve seafood (there is a line of seafood restaurants in this area so you have plenty of choice).

There were so many mistakes in the service of the person who served us. She didn't smile, first of all. We got the impression we were not welcome. We got bread but the restaurant couldn't fix drinks that were not on the menu. While drinking our pre-drink we got the starter. We didnt have time to enjoy either pre-drink or the starters seperatly. At this time the main course came in. A Henssler mix - their specialty, with sashimi, sushi, tempura. We still hadn't finished our drink, nor our starters. Now we also lacked the beer we were supposed to have with the starter. Our waitress did not present the main course, which was strange because there was a mix of a lot of different components. The waitress was still quite unengaged. She forgot the drink for the main course. We had to ask for it twice before it arrived after 30 minutes. Then we had come halfway through our main course. When we had finished our entire dinner - from the moment we were seated at our table to we got the check - it had been 50 mins. We dissapointed and went back to our hotel for coffee and desert.
