Yummy fish finger sandwiches - just a little too much bread for my taste…read more I've visited a few times following a walk or a run in the peaks. Today was a run and I was starving hungry and ready for a big feed. I was not disappointed - the fish finger sandwich was huge and came with great salt and pepper fries. I did leave some of the granary roll as it was just a bit much for me. The staff are always friendly, and there is an excellent range of beers. There are some good sunny, quiet outdoor seating spots and muddy boots and dogs are welcome. It does have a bit of a chain feel to it, however it's not really an issue as the location, food and beer are great.

Now any visit to the Peak District really should involve a visit to Castleton. Mam Tor (a large…read morehill with an impressive landslide and spectacular views), three caverns (one with a boat ride!) and a castle. The Castle Pub sits.... rather as you'd expect directly at the base of the hill from the actual Castle. Smack in the middle of all the walk routes for the area, a 2 minute walk from the most impressive of the caverns and a 2 minute drive (or a ten minute uphill walk) from Mam Torr. Now as to the pub, parking is costly as the nearest spaces are the "£4 for as many hours" cavern parking, but if you don't mine the walk theres free parking on the outskirts of town. You'll arrive at a pub with a huge amount of outside seating (the thing that sold me to it initially, over it nearest neighbours. When the temperature dipped a bit (as its want to in april) we headed inside. The pub is remarkably intimate despite its size, lots of side rooms warmed by real wood fires and enclosed in old fashioned dark wood beams. The food, delivered swiftly despite the busy bar was spectacular (though perhaps on the pricey side for the nicest options on the menu). The portions were of a good size and everything was delicious. We felt content to lounge by the fire long after our meal without being hurried along. I went away very full and very happy with the quality of service. In fact had i been on more than a day trip i could even have stayed, the pub runs an inn with private lounge areas for residents as well !! The only advice i think i owe it to readers to give is don't go eating there if you want to go climbing after, they will fill you with food and good ale and you won't ever want to leave!

Parking is very close as it is right next to the Talbot Street multistory car park - you also get a discount on the parking, it should be free but the discount is better than nothing. There is a bar and restaurant on the top floor, but it's nothing to get excited about - with all the bars and restaurants close by in the city center I don't see it as a good option. The food isn't bad, but it's not great. The bar also has limited options, especially in beer. In general the hotel is well maintained and clean. The room keys are just that keys, you have to remember to lock your door as they are not automatic, they are also attached to massive key fobs which makes them cumbersome. Also you have to put the key fob in a unit on the wall in the room to turn on the power in the room - so you can't leave your room and leave your laptop or phone charging. The main downside for business travelers is the terrible WiFi. The signal fluctuates widely with many dead spots and unusable areas. It's also pretty much unusably slow during peak hours - around breakfast and 5 - 9pm, dial up would be a better option. As a place to sleep it's just fine, but as a place to work or socialize... not so much.

There is now a pub/family restaurant built next door so you don't need to travel too far for food. It's a little outside of the city centre but it only takes 5/10 mins by bus/taxi to get there. It's within walking distance of Riverside retail park which offers a reasonable selection of shops.

Avoid the Harry Ramsden's end if you don't want your room to smell of fish and chips!

stayed in the citi lodge for one night and it was a really nice room, not fantastic views but you…read moreare in nottingham not new york!, the rooms are nice, comfortable and clean with the standard tv and tea making facilities it wasn't too expensive either, the room was a really good size and very spacious, wasn't tripping over anything there was plenty of wardrobe space and shelving which is ideal if you are staying for a weekend week and have a lot of stuff, the hotel itself was nice and quite didn't try any of the eating facilities or anything so can't comment on that but overall it was a nice stay.

Callow Hall used to be a private residence owned by my grand parents, and I lived there as a child…read more It is now a hotel, and Wildhive has done a spectacular job on the latest remodel. Our extended family met for a reunion and spent the week crying with joy at how beautiful our old home looks. The new addition of the glass atrium is a modern version of what the original architect had intended when it was built in 1849, but was never realized. The glass room used as a restaurant is brilliant. It has a classy, cozy feel yet allows diners to enjoy an unobstructed view of the rolling hills and fields dotted with grazing sheep, in a climate controlled environment. Well done Wildhive! The hives dotted in the wood behind is an excellent use of the forest and is cleverly done. We toured one cabin and were amazed at how trendy, modern, and comfortable they are. We stayed in my old room which had been updated to top quality standards. I have never slept in such a comfortable bed in my life. Somehow, Callow has been transformed into a hotel but has kept the feel of a home, which is the highest compliment I can pay. We ate a number of meals during our four-night stay and each one was cooked to perfection. The menu had a variety of yummy choices and we toured the diverse offerings. Five star all the way! A toast to the chefs for their talents. But it was the staff that deserve the greatest compliments. They made our family feel like we had come home and they are a credit to the Wildhive team. Everyone was amazing from the initial reservationist, Jane, to the general manager Jeremy, the bartenders, the waitstaff, the housekeepers, and of course, Dup, the right-hand man/valet/everything else, who became a friend. Stayed here for a weekend for a bit of hiking and a spooky Halloween party; the story is that the…read moreplace is haunted but I didn't encounter the ghost that hangs out in the car park, even on Halloween night. The hostel is perfectly located so that you can jump right onto a number of hiking trails, and is right by a scenic stream. The building itself is attractive and they've divided up the space so that there is plenty of common space on the ground floor and a large TV lounge upstairs. There's also an annex with additional rooms and another kitchen, as well as plenty of outdoor seating. Rooms typically had about 6 beds; the beds were kind of hard but I didn't really notice after being exhausted from a day of hiking and a long night of partying. One odd thing was that they had a number of showers hidden behind fire doors that had no indication that you should enter. It was definitely better equipped/organised than a lot of hostels I've stayed at plus very clean. A great base for some local trekking, but like all hostels, not so good for those who are picky about sharing.

As much as you can eat breakfast was 1 sausage per person not really as described. Not recommended. We still use the Travelodge for half the price!
