The Twitchell House is seriously an entire house (and barn and tent and yard) full of antiques. We probably spent two hours poking through all the rooms, digging up all sorts of neat little trinkets. GF got a soldering iron shaped like a pistol and some funky tins. I got a mid-century cake tin for a baker friend, an old glass ink well, a set of 1920s fake pearls, a 1940s black fox muff that I am so excited to rock the hell out of this winter...I think that's all I got...but it definitely wasn't all I wanted to get. The owners are also pretty awesome, and super chatty. They love their collection and they've carefully labeled everything in the building. If you're ever in Southern Vermont looking for an adventure, this is definitely a worthwhile stop.

They are in tough shape, and in need of a good cleaning, but they were a CRAZY good deal and exactly what I was searching for. For many years after 1808, farm implements were manufactured here. Lyman Batcheller & his sons bought the forge in 1835, and their forks became famous throughout the U.S. and Europe. In 1902 they merged with the firm making True Temper products, which re-built the Inn." The marker was erected in 1949 by the Vermont Historic Sites Commission. Inside, not just farm implements but jewelry and toys and furniture and cutting boards and glassware and pottery. It's just amazing to see all of this stuff that is, well, hand made in Vermont. Being an amateur furniture maker myself and also having been in the wood industry my whole career, I love wood. The furniture that Brent and his craftsmen make at Clear Lake Furniture is top notch. They have many different designs that you will not find in any furniture store and the quality is exceptional. After we checked out the showroom with a good representation of the what they can do I noticed a sign on the doorway that leads down to there shop which invites you to go down and explore the shop and talk with their craftsmen. Well I couldn't pass that up so down we went. We were welcomed by Mark who was very glad to show us around and see some of the beautiful woods they use to make their amazing furniture. He also explained that each piece of furniture is made by one craftsman from start to finish. So if you are interested in some handcrafted custom furniture, do yourself a favor and check them out.
