That's customer service. An added service is that the driver's contact information is provided the day before pick up so that both parties can give each other updates in real time. We have multiple day, multiple time airport pick-up. Gold Coast Town Car Services exceeded my expectations. I have contacted a few companies and I am lucky if if I get a timely response. Due to this, on our largest passenger count/day requiring 6 vans, Brian had to frantically find drivers at 6:20 AM, as he missed this request (Pick-up being 7:00 AM). Thankfully, the drivers pulled through, but the coordination was unnecessarily stressful. Driver wise, the drivers were all incredible, especially Alan who helped lead the other drivers. Alan had excellent communication, professionalism and kept our team feeling safe and on-time.

But realizing that I might miss my flight if any public transportation issues were to arise brought to mind an ad for Electric Limo that I had recently seen in the DeKalb New Values magazine (I ask my boyfriend to never throw those out - they're a great resource for keeping abreast of new businesses!). A flat rate to the airport in an all-electric vehicle may cost more than using public transportation, but finding a Yelp Deal inspired me go ahead and give the new company a shot. I called to reserve a taxi around 10pm on a Monday. But calling a small company at such a time probably wasn't a good idea: I didn't get an answer, and I was reluctant to leave a message because I wanted the piece of mind of a confirmed taxi pick-up in the morning before going to bed. I therefore gave Electric Limo's website a try, where I reserved a ride and received an email confirmation about 20 minutes later. Yay! A driver named Ryan picked me up the next morning in a timely and professional fashion in an awesome Tesla sedan. Electric Limo may not have the scale of a taxi fleet in a larger city - I'm used to calling cab companies at any time to arrange a reservation and paying at the end of the ride. But small interpersonal considerations underline how Electric Limo is a technologically forward-looking business with small town charm. Ron, the owner, contacted me to ask for my credit card number again because the one I provided online was incorrect. I feel a larger business would have cancelled my reservation right there. Ryan, my driver, also contacted me well before my scheduled pick-up time to notify me that flights might be delayed because of fog in the area. Overall, I had a great experience, and I definitely see myself using Electric Limo for taxi services in the future when I don't feel like lugging a suitcase through Metra and CTA trains en route to the airport.

Save yourself the money and drive up to Mauna Kea on your own…read more To be fair, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and did a good job getting everyone safely to the viewing location. We also lucked out with excellent weather. Unfortunately, those were the highlights. The experience itself was surprisingly chaotic. While the lead astronomer, Dylan, was trying to give his presentation, the photographer was constantly lining groups up for Milky Way photos just a few feet away. Between the photography, people talking, and others getting up for pictures, it was difficult to hear or stay engaged. If you're expecting a peaceful evening learning about the night sky, this isn't it. Dylan was clearly knowledgeable, but his presentation felt more like a stand-up comedy routine with astronomy mixed in than an actual guided stargazing experience. Instead of focusing on the stars and constellations we were actually looking at, much of the discussion revolved around black holes, nebulas, and other astronomy topics that had little connection to what was visible in the sky that night. It was entertaining at times, but not what we signed up for. The telescope felt especially misleading. The website advertises that one is provided, but guests never actually get to use it. Instead, we were shown images on an iPhone that were presented as if they had just been captured, only to later discover they had been taken weeks earlier. That left a bad taste and felt unnecessarily deceptive. By the end of the night, we genuinely couldn't figure out what our nearly $300 had paid for. The viewing location was on public land just minutes off the highway with no special access, we never looked through the telescope, and the astronomy portion rarely focused on the sky above us. In the end, it felt like we paid hundreds of dollars for hot chocolate, a folding chair, and two professionally taken Milky Way photos. Mauna Kea is breathtaking and absolutely worth experiencing. This tour, however, added very little value and actually detracted from what should have been a memorable, peaceful night under the stars.

My partner and I planned a trip to the Big Island…read morewith two goals in mind: (1) Driving to the Summit of Mauna Kea, and (2) see the best beaches we could. Since doing the first item requires a 4x4 vehicle (true fact, rangers check your car for 4lo and will turn you back without it), and many beaches require some off-pavement driving, we knew we needed a Jeep or another high clearance car with 4wd. I've rented dozens of cars from big name car rental outfits but I've constantly run into the problem of Hertz, Thrifty, etc not having the car I requested upon arrival--I just didn't trust selecting an "off road" or "luxury SUV" category and not ending up with the right kind of car. I also hate using businesses that are not local that direct all profits to off-island corps. Ultimately we found Big Island Jeep Rentals (BIJR). We were able to not just rent a Jeep, but a specific vehicle that we knew met our needs. It took out the uncertainty of renting from a big name car rental. While we had to arrange a short ride from the airport to reach BIJR, we did not have to wait in an hours-long queue that you normally face in the Budget/Enterprise/Sixt airport car rental multiplex. We had a contactless pick up and were on our way, canvas down, playing music as we found our first beach. It was also helpful because BIJR will add folding beach chairs, a quality wind-resistant beach umbrella, swim fins, and a small cooler to your trunk for you! These were essential items for enjoying the Big Island beaches. BIJR also sent us useful videos on how to use the 4x4 features for driving up Mauna Kea and a video on how to operate the cloth-top and access the trunk--useful since I've never driven a Jeep or used a 4x4. BIJR also made some reasonable requests to avoid certain tourist 4x4 spots where newbie off-roaders often (a) get into trouble or (b) damage BIJR's Jeeps and complicate those drivers' trips (e.g., Makalewena Beach and the Green Sand Beach [of which we heard was underwhelming anyway]). BIJR also can give you great tourist spot recommendations, too. In the end the only complication was that the Jeep we reserved was returned in bad shape. BIJR gave us a free upgrade to a luxury trim, but made sure we had all the features we needed (thanks for the Rubicon). Bottom Line: We got to do everything we wanted. I felt safe and prepared to use the 4x4 features. We were secure knowing our car rental would not be swapped for an insufficient replacement at the last moment. We were comfortable knowing our car rental could handle what we planned (in style). We had free access to a few beach items that made our luggage smaller and kept us from buying equipment on the Island that we'd have to leave behind. In the end we paid less than a premium upgrade at one of the big name car rental shops and got to support a local business.
