In the follow up call (closer to date of ride), the woman who called was an *angel* when I was having a difficult day- so much aloha, so pleasant. It was too noisy where I was when the phone rang & it made it hard to recall her name. I'd love to honor her by name. I was immensely glad that I requested a change in service from the transportation company my insurance originally assigned, and am so relieved that R & L pretty much said, "sure, happy to help". (I didn't need the early morning ride to OGG, only the ride home. But they were glad to pick me up at 5 a.m. if I needed them.) And no excessive messaging! Love that! One text when I was boarded on return flight, but long before take off. Perfect, with specific info where to find car at airport. Very easy to find car upon pick up in the very late afternoon/early evening. Vehicle was ideal for taxi & tours, pristine in every way, very spacious and so clean. No odors of any type. Charles is a safe and responsible driver. Normally I'd have loved to be left alone to rest in quiet (yet he was the one to first bring up the option, and encouraged me to do so if I wished, and it was *enormously* appreciated). But once I was in the vehicle a few minutes, I felt better than I had, and then congenial conversation was shared. I'm not a chat person. Conversation with Charles was easier than it is with a lot of people, for me. Not forced, didn't feel phony or performative- just relaxed and friendly, appropriate. It was the best part of a long day for me (except for the time with my family member who helped with my drop off early morning and for the short visit I was lucky to have with a sibling later that morning in Honolulu). After the very lengthy medical visit (almost 6 hours) on Oahu, I can't imagine a better way to be delivered home. Charles is a great pro and rep for Hawaii nei and for R & L. Recommend highly.

Save yourself the money and drive up to Mauna Kea on your own…read more To be fair, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and did a good job getting everyone safely to the viewing location. We also lucked out with excellent weather. Unfortunately, those were the highlights. The experience itself was surprisingly chaotic. While the lead astronomer, Dylan, was trying to give his presentation, the photographer was constantly lining groups up for Milky Way photos just a few feet away. Between the photography, people talking, and others getting up for pictures, it was difficult to hear or stay engaged. If you're expecting a peaceful evening learning about the night sky, this isn't it. Dylan was clearly knowledgeable, but his presentation felt more like a stand-up comedy routine with astronomy mixed in than an actual guided stargazing experience. Instead of focusing on the stars and constellations we were actually looking at, much of the discussion revolved around black holes, nebulas, and other astronomy topics that had little connection to what was visible in the sky that night. It was entertaining at times, but not what we signed up for. The telescope felt especially misleading. The website advertises that one is provided, but guests never actually get to use it. Instead, we were shown images on an iPhone that were presented as if they had just been captured, only to later discover they had been taken weeks earlier. That left a bad taste and felt unnecessarily deceptive. By the end of the night, we genuinely couldn't figure out what our nearly $300 had paid for. The viewing location was on public land just minutes off the highway with no special access, we never looked through the telescope, and the astronomy portion rarely focused on the sky above us. In the end, it felt like we paid hundreds of dollars for hot chocolate, a folding chair, and two professionally taken Milky Way photos. Mauna Kea is breathtaking and absolutely worth experiencing. This tour, however, added very little value and actually detracted from what should have been a memorable, peaceful night under the stars.

My partner and I planned a trip to the Big Island…read morewith two goals in mind: (1) Driving to the Summit of Mauna Kea, and (2) see the best beaches we could. Since doing the first item requires a 4x4 vehicle (true fact, rangers check your car for 4lo and will turn you back without it), and many beaches require some off-pavement driving, we knew we needed a Jeep or another high clearance car with 4wd. I've rented dozens of cars from big name car rental outfits but I've constantly run into the problem of Hertz, Thrifty, etc not having the car I requested upon arrival--I just didn't trust selecting an "off road" or "luxury SUV" category and not ending up with the right kind of car. I also hate using businesses that are not local that direct all profits to off-island corps. Ultimately we found Big Island Jeep Rentals (BIJR). We were able to not just rent a Jeep, but a specific vehicle that we knew met our needs. It took out the uncertainty of renting from a big name car rental. While we had to arrange a short ride from the airport to reach BIJR, we did not have to wait in an hours-long queue that you normally face in the Budget/Enterprise/Sixt airport car rental multiplex. We had a contactless pick up and were on our way, canvas down, playing music as we found our first beach. It was also helpful because BIJR will add folding beach chairs, a quality wind-resistant beach umbrella, swim fins, and a small cooler to your trunk for you! These were essential items for enjoying the Big Island beaches. BIJR also sent us useful videos on how to use the 4x4 features for driving up Mauna Kea and a video on how to operate the cloth-top and access the trunk--useful since I've never driven a Jeep or used a 4x4. BIJR also made some reasonable requests to avoid certain tourist 4x4 spots where newbie off-roaders often (a) get into trouble or (b) damage BIJR's Jeeps and complicate those drivers' trips (e.g., Makalewena Beach and the Green Sand Beach [of which we heard was underwhelming anyway]). BIJR also can give you great tourist spot recommendations, too. In the end the only complication was that the Jeep we reserved was returned in bad shape. BIJR gave us a free upgrade to a luxury trim, but made sure we had all the features we needed (thanks for the Rubicon). Bottom Line: We got to do everything we wanted. I felt safe and prepared to use the 4x4 features. We were secure knowing our car rental would not be swapped for an insufficient replacement at the last moment. We were comfortable knowing our car rental could handle what we planned (in style). We had free access to a few beach items that made our luggage smaller and kept us from buying equipment on the Island that we'd have to leave behind. In the end we paid less than a premium upgrade at one of the big name car rental shops and got to support a local business.

I roll my window down because it was stuffy in the van. I believe Uber/Lyft require open windows and to avoid circulating air while in the vehicle. So he says, can you roll up the window? It's bothering my ear. I said, no I'd rather not breathe in your warm air. We're still in a pandemic. He has a hissy and says, fine roll them all down then, and stomps on the gas. Wouldn't all windows down bother his ears more? Loser... Think I'll stick with ride-sharing.

His knowledge of Waipiʻo Valley, its history, culture, people, agriculture, waterways and the relationship between the community and the land, was extraordinary. He didn't simply drive us through a beautiful place, he helped us understand what we were seeing and why this valley is so sacred and deserving of respect. Equally important was the sense of safety Seanry created for our group. Navigating the incredibly steep road into Waipiʻo is no small thing, yet I felt completely comfortable in his hands. He was attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely cared about everyone's experience. Initially, I was disappointed to learn that the tour's permit does not include access to the black sand beach but once we entered the valley, however, that disappointment disappeared. There is SO much more to Waipiʻo than its beach. The waterfalls, taro fields, freshwater springs, wild horses, vegetation, history and people who continue to call the valley home made this one of the most meaningful experiences I've had on Hawaiʻi Island and throughout my world travels. The value for the money is beyond words. What you receive isn't simply transportation into a place most visitors can no longer access by vehicle or on foot, you receive an education and a deeper appreciation for Waipiʻo that you simply cannot get by standing at the lookout with another tour bus. I also came away understanding why these permitted tours are so important. If we ever hope to see responsible public access to the road expanded again, visitors need to understand how to enter this sacred place with respect, for the residents, the culture, the land and the fragile ecosystem. Experiences like this provide that education. If you are visiting the Big Island, do not just drive to the lookout or take another tour bus, take a picture and leave. Take THIS tour. Go into the valley. Listen to its stories. Learn about the people who have lived there and those who still do. Understand the land you're standing on. Waipiʻo deserves to be more than something we photograph. It deserves to be understood, respected and protected. And if you're fortunate enough to have Seanry as your guide, you're in excellent hands. A must do experience on Hawaiʻi Island!
