BEWARE! is what I advise. I am a young 54-year old two-time cancer survivor. The first was stage III bladder cancer. The second was stage high II / low III colorectal cancer. I also have interstitial cystitis and colitis, so had been very ill from the outset. I happen to "present well (never "look sick")," and in both cases, diagnosis was slow and painful in coming and could have happened a LOT earlier had I been taken seriously from the start. I ended up being diagnosed in Sweden, where I have found that the medical system is amazingly good.
Before the second cancer, I was feeling quite ill, and as do most people, I know my body. I felt certain that something was very wrong. My GP agreed, and told me that with my colitis, background, I certainly needed to see a gastroenterologist immediately. She got me an urgent appointment with this "specialist."
When I went to Dr. Miller with:
1) severe pain
2) considerable rectal bleeding
3) a very large, palpable bump around my tailbone, and
4) a history of colitis and very recent bladder cancer (3.5 years prior)
She did not see it necessary to EXAMINE ME! No "Let's take a look," No colonoscopy recommended, nothing. She was very casual and fast, no-nonsense-seeming, pushed me to purchase a very expensive pro-biotic, "VSL#3" ( I firmly believe that she gets a cut of the sales), and put me on steroids.
As corticosteroids naturally mask and artificially reduce the body's inflammation responses, I immediately felt considerably better for the duration of the steroid course. I wasn't altogether "right," but I had been so ill for so long that I assumed that it would take some time to improve completely.
When I went to my check-back appointment, I was surprised to be attended to by a physician's assistant, Christina, who was among the most unpleasant of people I've had to deal with. Unfriendly and dismissive, she sent me off, and I left the office feeling uncomfortable -- you know the feeling that you've not been heard.
The point is that it was not before seeing several other inadequate local doctors who shooed me away, that I was diagnosed while visiting family, and becoming ill in Sweden. Colorectal cancer; stage: high II- low III. By that time I was so weakened and ill that treatment was aggressive and complicated. This was a full seven months after having seen "Doctor" Miller and other poor excuses for medical professionals.
I have been left disabled from this second cancer, with considerable permanent damage due to what's called Pelvic Radiation Disease, and myriad complications from the necessarily aggressive cancer treatment. LINDA MILLER BEARS RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS.
Linda Miller saw me in the spring time of 2005, and I was not diagnosed until January 2006. As my gastroenterologist, I went with a problem - CANCER -- that could have been addressed THAT SAME DAY- as I had a very prominent, bleeding lump that one could see and feel. Biopsy would have taken care of it. Instead, I suffered greatly, and the cancer continued to develop, for SEVEN MONTHS.
Obviously, I do not recommend Linda Miller. In her casual, carelessness, she is dangerous to patients. Sure, she may seem "cool" as others have commented, but I don't go to a gastroenterologist seeking "cool." I am not looking for doctor friends.
And the PA? A crass boor.
An extra: I was told by a reliable friend that Dr. Miller perforated her colon while performing a routine colonoscopy. When she was urgently seen by a different doctor, he reported that she was very bruised inside. How nice.
UPDATE (2012): I was later referred to Dr. Majuk, Linda Miller's office colleague, and have been with him since then (2006). He has recently moved and opened his own practice. Now *this* is an EXCELLENT gastro man. Lovely, professional, great doctor. I am still alive, NO thanks to "doctor" Miller. Others' reviews will corroborate my evaluation of Dr. Majuk.
