Kristina was our tour guide, and she was very kind, professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. She provided the children in our group activity groups and provided fascinating information about Native American Indians and the Trail of Tears. She refused money and tips. Instead, she requested that we only sign the guest book. If we liked, we could provide a donation to the Heritage Center. It was an honor to have Kristina as our tour guide and learn more about Native American Indians.

In addition to being the resting place for two Cherokee leaders it was also a winter camp and ration stop along the Trail of Tears and there are benches along the path around the former camp area to take in the surroundings. Because the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was born here. Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 26, 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. I cannot imagine what it was like back in those times but to see where she came from to what she became in her life is astounding. The dwelling is marked as a Historical Landmark but it is unkempt and not restored. I pray that some group be it her family or her fans find a way to restore it and make it a museum.
