I never know who was going to be watching him and that is such an uncomfortable feeling. But the big issue came with his biting. Its an awful thing to go through as a parent. You feel so bad for the child that got bitten! He was basically asked to leave the second daycare; it was awful and embarrassing. The first time I talked to Shannon on the phone (before doing a tour), I literally fell in love with her! She said all the right words and didn't seem worried in the slightest when I told here about his biting problem. I still remember her words! "He just needs extra love and attention and it will stop." And I can't tell you how true that is! Shannon's loves on all the kids the way us moms/dads do. Her kids aren't just little humans she watches during the day. She loves them and truly wants them to be prepared and excel at their next stages! I hadn't gotten that feeling from the other two daycares. One was a large corporate style place. Cold and all white and just too many kids. But not at Shannon's! The house is warm, inviting, colorful and so much fun. We sometimes stayed a little bit when I arrived to pick him up because he was having such a blast that he's not ready to go. Especially during rainy-day dance parties! Even in the mornings, I would have to ask for a hug and kiss goodbye because he's just ready to play right away! OR he would still be sleepy and need to snuggle with Shannon and Tucker before the other kids started showing up. Don't get me started about the backyard. So much room to run and play and learn! Oh and did I mention the beach sand area??? The kids love it so much that I didn't even mind all the sand that came home in his pockets! We left Shannon's because it was time for Kindergarten. She prepared him so much that he started early at 4 years old! She makes learning so fun! I am so lucky that he got to be with Shannon for a few years. This is the first and only childcare she's ever attended, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I will say that I have been nothing but THRILLED with Shannon's from day 1. Things I love about it: - It's in a big, cozy old PDX bungalow. It's not a home daycare (which is a plus in my book), but it's in a house rather than a 'facility', which is awesome. The outdoor space is amazing and huge and offers a zillion activities...multiple playhouses, slides, tunnels, water tables, even a large asphalt area for learning to ride trikes and bikes. They have picnic tables outside for eating outdoors in nice weather. - Shanny and her two core staff members, Kristin and Courtney are all amazing. They each bring something unique and valuable to the equation, and my daughter loves them all. It's really reassuring to not have to worry about staff turnover. - I feel like my daughter is treated kindly and respected, yet is not allowed to run wild. There is enough discipline to keep all the kids balanced and learning, but I never worry about her treatment for a second. The moment I walked in (after touring several other places that were pure CHAOS), I was really impressed with how well behaved and SMART all the kids were. - The curriculum is great, and Shanny works to improve all the time. - The rates are very fair. It isn't the cheapest place in town, but neither is it the most expensive by any stretch. Overall, my one and only has really thrived at Shannon's. I can't speakly highly enough about it, really. Their philosophy of child led learning and socializing is a perfect fit for our child. The director and teachers are always available and are in regular communications with us about how we can best help our kid overcome problems, enhance his learning, and work through some of this big childhood emotions. We know our kid is growing fast, and when we can't be there, we are so glad that Childroots can be. They are not only helping our now 5 year old build skills for life, they are helping us be better parents.

Weird - the google reviews for this place are turn off? I have not seen that before and it is…read moresuspect. Like what happen that we do not know about? We were 4th grade family in 2026. We dropped it after a season. It is well meaning, charming, safe and dilligent. But it wasn't for us. It is dusty, no-lunch provided, classrooms without windows and a lil' more structured than PPS (which we liked). You could tell that the teachers had a bit more freedom and less supervision. A lot of students with no shoes and they use the park next door all day. I not sure I am entirely okay with this park use everyday by every class thing. If the local tire shop used the park as part of their buissness model people would be up in arms. I was assuming they used it like three times a week. They use it like six times a day (the entire school). PPS is an insane asslume 20% of the time in their Elementry Schools. Seriously their are fight, diapers, crying and threats everyday. But this wasn't the fix that we thought it would be. The teachers seemed a lil' oblvious and had just a little bit of a lower level of professnalism - one example was when a second grade class exited they would sing a group spirit song. Very charming. First two weeks the kids played along and it was cute. But the following months the students gradually lost interest and stoped singing. But the teacher didn't look back when leading the line or seem to notice on any level. She had her back to the children. The students were rolling their eyes, drifting and struggling. It was a bit smug and not responsable to have not be looking more closely. It also added to the mayhem of their pick-up process. They gave zero care to how that would work and wildeness they were contributing to. Worse drop off and pickup process I have experienced. It was heavy lifting picking up the child. It got so wild and noisy that I was being knocked into everyday - so I backed up a bit (like 30'). So the teacher had to tell me that I was to far away. It is a bit of a Portland hippy scene. Sweet and well meaning. There was a lot of parents not dressed for the weather, the grounds were very muddy, whole vibe was worn out in tone. Not a lot of acknowledgment for working parents. It is time involved. We tried - it just had to be measurably better than PPS if we were going to pay for it. It wasn't.

The school beautifully nurtures their way of seeing and being in community, service, and connection. Not only do they cultivate curiosity, but children also learn musical instruments, work with their hands, dance and move, study Japanese language and culture, and engage in rich practices of storytelling and listening. We've participated in amazing field trips to places like Ekone Ranch, the Salmon Ceremony at Oxbow, service trips to the food bank, and more. The kids also participate in Nature Immersion Fridays, where they build and explore in creeks, rivers, and forests--co-creating with friends while learning practical outdoor skills and environmental identification.
