David Morrell's office handled a house that I rented with some housemates, close to UCSC. The house was not in the best condition but the worst part about living there was the lack of help from David or his staff members. We alerted his assistant during the summer that the washer and dryer were not working--we were hoping for it to be fixed before we moved in for the Fall quarter. The assistant quit or was changed into another position and David was our only point of contact for any issues. It took me threatening to withhold rent before he finally responded to our inquiry. In total, it was about 2 MONTHS from our initial reach out before he did anything. After we threatened to withhold rent it took another 3 weeks before we had the new washer/dryer placed in. The worst part was the dryer didn't fit through the door so we had a washing machine for a few days while the old dryer and the new dryer both sat in our living room. Shortly after, our dishwasher and stove/oven broke down. It was expensive and annoying for me and my 2 housemates to have to go to another location to do our laundry despite the fact our house was supposed to have a working washer/dryer. In the 2 months we lacked a proper working washer/dryer I personally spent over 50 dollars at a laundromat. I was a broke college student who barely was able to afford her textbooks so yes, that 50 dollars + the time wasted was not fun. I moved out after Fall quarter. To the best of my knowledge, the oven still has yet to be fixed now that it's been well over 2 months. Thankfully, my housemates don't cook too much--college lifestyle--so it's not that bad but it's still pretty bad. Now, mind you, I've lived in terrible houses in Santa Cruz. Due to the student population, and just simply because Santa Cruz is gorgeous to live in, there's a lot of demand for rentals. I've lived in houses with mold, broken appliances, etc. but every single landlord has at least REPLIED to our emails. David complained that the tone of my emails were rude and that was the reason why he didn't reply. The first emails were not rude at all. It was only after being ignored for weeks that we threatened to withhold rent (where I admit, I did use language/tone that showed how annoyed we were with everything). Before that we were polite and their assistant always replied to our inquires. Realize this, we paid thousands of dollars to live in a disgusting house, with broken appliances, and David couldn't be bothered to reply to my emails and say "ok, we're on it, please give us two weeks." It should not take 2 months to replace a washer/dryer. We even offered to front the bill and buy new appliances if the landlord would be willing to pay us back afterwards because we were so over everything. (An idea my Father had) He completely ignored us. Regardless of how busy his office is, the fact that no one would bother with our concerns was really annoying. read more
