My Taylor GTe Blacktop's action was way high as I bought it used on Reverb. I was thinking the worse which on Taylor guitars is a neck reset. I took it in to David. It took a little over a week but it was worth it. He immediately put it in an enclosed humidifier as my 2022 GTe was a bit dry which can change the geometry of the neck. He restrung it with the strings Taylor recommends and did a truss rod adjustment. He treated the neck and body with his treatments and it looked like new. Then back in the humidifier again to settle the guitar down. When I picked it up, it was like it came out of the factory. I highly recommend you take your Taylor guitar to David as he is factory trained and Taylor authorized luthier. read more

When my 25 year old Taylor acoustic guitar needed some attention I wasn't sure which shop to trust with working on it. I initially found David's Broken Note in Woodland on the Taylor Manufacturer's website, and after reading some reviews on Yelp it seemed like it would be worth the 45 minute drive to have him check the guitar out. There was much that needed attention. Neck was bowing, action was shot, electronics didn't work and other items needed help. I knew it had once been a superb instrument but years (and maybe some neglect) and it was hurting. I asked David to please get it as close to new as possible, not really expecting that was realistic. Today when I picked it up I was absolutely blown away. It looked fantastic, sounded even better than new (aged wood, richer tone).. and the neck was perfect. Action is great, fingerboard looks wonderful and I felt fortunate to have found the right place. No one likes to give up their instrument to service, it's nerve wracking and, ironically, you've given up the tool that soothes you in times of stress. So, when my beloved Taylor 410E no longer amplified I had to seek a tech. A phone call to @TaylorGuitars informed me that the nearest Taylor certified technician was thirty-five minutes away at David's Broken Note in Woodland, CA. A bit of a drive but I wanted my baby fixed and done right by a certified tech. A phone call to David was the beginning of my confidence boost as he clearly knew all about the instrument and it's ES pickups and amp so I took a drive to Woodland. Meeting David and seeing his shop was my second confidence boost. One can see that he's professional and organized just by walking in. The big-screen in the corner dutifully and silently playing a video on guitar restoration and preservation while jazz played from the overhead speakers. I'll spare the reader the fine details of checking in my instrument and say instead that David carefully looked over my Taylor and gave me a number of possibilities and options from best to worst case scenario. He was patient and understanding and thorough. We wrote up the guitar and I left feeling good about leaving it with David. My confidence was well placed as David called me just later that evening with an early prognosis. As we suspected, the ES system needed replacing and, after getting my go-ahead, he ordered the parts from Taylor. I'm going to keep quiet on how long the repair took simply because I don't want you, dear reader, to gain unrealistic expectations as every repair is different but I will say that it was MUCH faster than I had ever expected and I was happily surprised when David called to ask that I come in and check the work. My 410E has never played better. The action is smooth as glass and as low on the board as it can get with zero buzz. The intonation is true-true and the repair work is simply not to be seen, my baby looks brand new and sounds even better than when it actually was. So, I have a new guitar tech. I won't go anywhere but David's Broken Note and you shouldn't either. His top-notch abilities are exceeded only by his phenomenal customer service. Absolutely brilliant work on my Michael Kelly 1967 Model Strat. I had some setup issues as well as electronics wiring problems. He was able to present the best options for my instrument and I am extatic about the way the guitar feels and sounds. I had a Seymore Duncan " Hot Rails" single coil pickup and my guitar now , is a monster. Love the feeling of it , I can confidently play my instrument at any gig from now on. David's ability to accurately distinguish serious issues with my electric guitar earned him my total respect. I highly recommend David's Broken Note to future customers. Don't ever rake a vintage horn horm this guy he is a band instrument at best craftsman he ruined my 1962 alto took the patina off and put in band instrument plastic pads when I asked for metal resonators, my favorite horn, he ruined it. read more

Wow, what a great little music store! I have made four visits in the past month since finding David's Broken Note. Every time I have been amazed by the customer service. Thus far I have had my wife's guitar inspected and repaired(By David), found a wonderful piano teacher for my son(Carrie), and purchased strings etc. David was so was so honest and straight forward about what the guitar needed and what was worth doing. What we had him do was reasonably priced and quickly completed. When picking up the guitar I inquired about lessons for my son and was introduced to Carrie one of I think 3 piano teachers. Recently bought a 2018 Gibson SG that was in need of a setup and had David's Broken Note recommended. It's a small shop but I was immediately greeted by staff. David was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain to exact steps involved in a setup. He quoted me a very reasonable price and told me the guitar should be ready in approximately a week based on his current workload. Just four days later(the shop being closed two of those days) he gave me a call letting me know my guitar was ready. When I arrived he explained exactly what he had done to the guitar and plugged into an amp so I could play it for myself and check for any needed adjustments. The guitar was perfect! I have an ancient silver colored trombone that had been sitting in its case since I last played it 55 years ago. The serial numbers indicate the slide was constructed in 1908, and the bell was made in 1941. My dad purchased this used trombone for me in 1960, and I played it for the next 6.5 years. Since then, however, it sat in its original case, unused. The trombone was discolored, smelled awful, and was completely encased in mold. The case was pretty gross too. I thought it was beyond hope. I took it to Davids' Broken Note to see if they could make it presentable and playable. The result is remarkable! They cleaned the trombone as well as the case, took some nicks out of the slide, lubed the slide, and made minor repairs in the case. Davids' charged me $100 for the cleanup and repairs, leaving me with a shiny and ultra-cool instrument that I can once again enjoy! I'm super pleased with the quality of work, the price, and their attitude throughout all our interactions. This was amazing, and I highly recommend Davids' Broken Note! read more

I took a couple Taylor guitars to David. One needed to have the bridge removed and glued back into place. The other guitar was new but had some intonation issues. David was able to take an long forgotten guitar and restore it to a better playing condition than when it was brand new. Problems included floyd rose intonation, neck warp, missing knobs, and bad wiring. Everything was repaired in timely manner and for a price cheaper than what the out of town shops would have charged. Additionally, he was able to balance the tremolo system with an non-standard tuning (two steps down). After having abandon this guitar 10 years ago I am very happy that I happened upon the Broken Note. I'm now a customer for life - Thanks, David! read more
