I have lived in Davis since I was very little and have grown up here. I have dealt with police in many places on many occasions and this police department is the best I have ever encountered. They are incredibly professional and respond pretty quickly considering their numbers. I do not have police in my family and I am a very pro 2nd Amendment, small government, and individual freedom. These things would usually conflict with love for police departments but Davis PD is very open and they do not abuse their power, at least in my opinion. This contrasts greatly with our Sheriff and our neighboring UC Police (both of which I have had bad experiences with). In Jr. High I was held at gunpoint by Carl's Jr. by several Davis PD and the Sheriff's Department. Someone thought I had a gun (I didn't) so of course, the police had to respond. Despite the felony stop and the unpleasant experience, I felt that they did their job and did not go beyond their power. No, the cuffs were not comfortable and being on the pavement sucked too, but compliance kept my mom and me alive and well. I have been unlawfully detained many times by UC Davis police and I think to have that many officers that do not know the law and to have such unprofessional officers on the force, is a disgrace. They seem more like a bunch of "bros" than professional peace officers. To be fair, I am judging these experiences from 4+ years ago; they have not bothered me since. Chief Black was an awesome Chief for many years and now we have Chief Pytel who is doing a great job as well. Davis PD also offers a free Citizen's Police Academy where you learn about your rights and about the different departments in the police department. I highly recommend people to take this course to learn about your rights. All police departments deal with scumbags and the people that we do not want to have to deal with. I judge the police on how they deal with these encounters and then how they treat the law-abiding citizens who request help. If they're constantly an a-hole, they probably should not be a police officer. Davis PD is not perfect by any means. The police should not be solving all of our problems anyways. However, these guys and gals do their jobs very well and I hope they keep up the good work they do for our community. read more

Honestly, who is even surprised anymore? The police only seem to have time to eat donuts for breakfast, conduct traffic stops, and turn a blind eye to stolen bikes, laptops, and probably missing children. Maybe they need more funding to keep our city safer :) read more

I called the Davis police Department nonemergency line to discuss a couple things and received attitude from the dispatcher and then they hung up on me when I wasn't even finished speaking. do better dispatchers, you're supposed to help people's life on the line!! read more

Very polite and despite disagreements, they were still willing to give me a ride home. Although I would prefer not to interact with any police department, if given a choice, Davis PD would be near the top of the list. read more

I moved to Davis a few years back and it seems to be a bit of an adjustment. I'm a single mom to teenage boys and that in itself can be a challenge. Without telling the internet about my personal business, I will share my family has had two very traumatic experiences, and with the help of the Davis PD, we came to a resolution very quickly. Often cops can be cold and unconcerned about a situation, but I've had the same officer help with both situations, and found the department as a whole have been very quick in their response time and assistance quite helpful! read more

It has become increasingly difficult to understand what the Davis police do to protect and serve. Last night I was standing in line at the Rite Aid on Cowell. A male came in and started talking to the clerk. I am not sure what he wanted but he became extremely aggitated. He threw a dime at her and said give me a f___ bag b___. She gave him a bag and he marched out and then came back in telling her he would kill her and called her a white b___.. i called 911 and he startef yelling at me. Same words, "im gonns kill you white b___." After he left I went ouside to see what direction he went so U could tell the police. The guy came at me.i ran back into the store. When the police got there they told me what the guy did was not illegal. They wouldn't look for him or take a report. The officer ssid unless he said how he was going to kill me (knife, gun etc.), it wasn't a crime. At the time I didn't remember that he also said he would shoot me. It was very chaotic and I was on the phone with disparch when the guy was yelling. I can't iunderstand the extreme lack of accountability the Davis police department has. Laughing at how Davis is supposed to be an educated community when the community of Yelp and local citizens post distorted facts. This is in regards to the college students who got peppered in the face. First, school cops are different then police. This is because they answer to two different entities. Real police answer to the government and community. School cops answers to the principle of the school. This means school cops are in the same league as common security guards. Second, the school cops peppered people who were not students in the face. The real cops came to back up the "school security cops" who were doing a bad job. Third, I find it laughable that people do not understand that sheriff, police, highway patrol, corrections and homeland security are entirely different entities. Be educated if you are going to complain or understand the rules of the country you are born in. Finally I have to say that all this misunderstanding is a gross miscommunication of lazy people who do not research the facts and believe everything that some random person says. Anyone who has third grade English skills understands what ethos truly means. Now getting to where the 5 stars comes into play. Real people of Davis volunteer their time to make their city safe. Statistics consistently prove that people outside of town are always the one who causes trouble. The facility waiting room is comfortable and has a station where kids can sit at their own table and chairs. The table even has crayons to color in their coloring books. The citizens of Davis have annual local events where people from out of town consistently ruin it for the citizens of the town. I am getting tired of hearing problems from bars about people who do not live here. This 5 stars is for the real police officers of Davis. Who actively helps the community and participates in the events the citizens of Davis celebrate annually. Thank you for your community policing and efforts in making Davis the wonderful place that it is. If you see a Davis school protestor, ask them if they actually live in Davis. Horrible, this city's police department is almost as bad as Elk Grove PD was 10 years ago. What to say? The front desk is always off task chatting with each other and then helps you with an attitude while helping the older, Caucasian patrons with a smile and respect. They are uninformed about the law or tell lies to keep the money from fines they issue. They also write you a letter with one deadline and then another letter with an earlier deadline telling you that you are too late because you went by the initial deadline. Your friend, a Davis native, will giggle and tell you about the ticket he got that was totally his fault and immediately waved by the city when he filed an appeal. When you turn in a paper with their address on it, they will say it is the wrong location and never give it to their boss. Later, she will ask for it as if it is your fault they did something with it. You will Facebook your Japanese UCD exchange student clients who were constantly harassed over summer for no reason and therefore were deterred from living in Davis ever, and they will give words of encouragement. Complain to the city and have someone higher up personally call you saying it was a mistake. After a few more phone calls, she will hang up on you mid-sentence after getting mad about a data disconnect between their office, their finance office, and the DMV as if you have control of what the f the DMV does. You sit in your car with your proof of payment from DMV that you offered to bring by again, but for some reason Mrs. S's hearing failed or it wasn't an acceptable option. Meanwhile, you wonder if all the trouble is worth the $314 after such harassment and whether you should just let them get away with bullying you due to your age and race and complete your school work as soon as possible and get the heck out of the Davis bubble. But you work three jobs and go to school full time, and have no family, and volunteer...so you need the money an continue to put up with the incompetence. BUT DAVIS IS SO SAFE Here's the thing, safety is not about how good the police are. I feel less safe in Davis than I do in South Sac Mack Road, where I'm from, because at least the police have better things to do than harass me. What makes Davis safe is the population being almost entirely made up of 'prestigious' students and retired wealthy people, all of whom do not generally commit real crimes. You wanna know how not to get messed in 'the ghetto'? Don't flaunt wealth in the face of the desperate. There are little to none here, but the city's income is high so the police get shiny new facilities that are kept up by tickets and students get messed up roads, unsafe crossings, and inflated living costs. read more

I made a police report last week on a break in to my car (lap top stolen). After about one day, I received an email response saying that my report was denied saying that because I did not include the lap tops serial number, the report was fully denied. I wrote back immediately explaining that the online report template cuts off your report (I not only tried to include a full description of the computer but also the serial number), but worse, I never received a phone call or email to clarify, only a full denial. Way to make me feel safe and make me feel like my report matters. I would expect more in a town like Davis - what a disappointment. read more

2 stars because it took a change in shift of the front desk and 3 different employees to get my problem resolved. I normally don't need to deal with ANY police department but an unfortunate correctable violation brought me to Davis police. I was told by the issuing officer at the time of violation I can go to any police department or officer to document my fix. Today I don't why but I kept sitting around for over 45 minutes in the waiting area while 4 other people who came after me were all serviced. So one can only imagine how impatient I felt since I needed to go back to work. Keep in mind I called 530-747-5400 at 820am today to ask if I needed to make an appointment, how long is the wait, and the operator told me it is best to come in after 12pm. Fast forward to 1:30pm. When I arrived at the Davis police building today I spoke to the Caucasian female front desk receptionist about my correctable violation. Again I waited for 30 mins and believed that maybe the efficiency work flow was blocked by some kind of police emergency. I didn't think I needed to remind her that its 2:15pm and I needed an officer's help. It seemed like there was no communication between that receptionist and officer because no one assured me I was heard and helped. At about 220pm I really had to make moves so I approach the front desk and another Asian receptionist (bless her work ethic) helped me. In fact she asked me how long I waited as well as suggested if I can't wait 10 more mins, to leave and ask UCD campus police to write off the violation ticket. Alas 1 min after I talked to Asian receptionist a female officer was available to assist. Overall, the officer took less than a minute to write off my ticket, the Caucasian front desk worker took 45 minutes with no results, and lastly but most gratefully the Asian receptionist took charge with results in 2 mins....so I'm giving Davis police 2 stars. Do I need to remind this department my tax dollars pay for their salary? read more

If you want to pay a full fee you can come in the morning, but they make it difficult to Pay corrected fees so that working people can't make the times. You can ONLY Pay corrected fees after noon. When most people work. Great way the city is scamming its people! read more

There could be much worse places to go when dealing with the law than the Davis Police Station. This relatively new, clean and accessible building is your home for everything law-related, from that ridiculous ticket you got for riding without a bike helmet to that one-day alcoholic beverage application for a fundraiser, which is why I paid a visit. The secretary wasn't big on personality and the general vibe of very serious police officers standing around made me want to scram as soon as possible. Overall, it's a far cry better than the station in Sactown. read more

These guys do their job and are some of the most professional police I have ever met. At my previous job, shoplifting was incredibly common. They always made the time to come out and take a report. Even if the store was busy and customers demanding, they were patient and waited for me to serve people. They even went above and beyond and increased their patrol presence on the street in front of my work. Shoplifting decreased dramatically over the rest of the time I worked there. Davis has some of the nicest police you will ever meet. Their station lobby is comfy too. read more

My car was sideswiped by a hit and run driver. Thank goodness I was down the street from the police department. Came in to report it and was helped out in a timely and efficient manner. I had a witness who supplied a license plate and the officer that helped me was able to press charges against the drive that hit my car and track them down. Overall I am satisfied with the service that they had provided. FYI Davis PD is NOT the same as UCDPD so they were not responsible for the pepper spray incident. THESE ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS. So please ignore the ignorant comments left my others who have failed to do more research into what they're writing about. read more

I am sure the officers are swell but the dispatchers suck. I called in because I was worried about a group of college kids that use the pool in my complex. I tried to tell the dispatcher that I could hear a boy puking in the pool complex, calling for help and asking for water. She ridiculed me for not giving a direct address (not for the pool but for myself) and then told me she would send over a firetruck to ' help'. 1 hr and 30 minutes later I saw no firetruck, policemen or medics. In fact, I saw a drunken, limp boy as he was carried out. Thank God this guy's drunk buddies carried his intoxicated body out of the pool area because Davis PD surely didn't help. read more

The Davis police department lacks interest in the crimes that may be burdening to you. My car was broke into and as I called the police department to come check it out and write a report, they called me back saying they were busy and would not be able to come out until the next day. They then suggested I do the report myself. I submitted the form, and I still have not been able to get a police report form. The office staff, or whomever answers the telephone, is not helpful and makes you feel even more stressed out. The police staff are supposed to be helpful, not a pain to deal with. They would keep transferring me back and forth from line to line and I would end up with a voicemail. I left about 4 voicemails, and never got a response, up until today. They called me to tell me my report was cancelled and if I wanted a report, I would have to do this all over again. It's so incredibly frustrating how hard it is to get help from the one department you shouldn't have to try hard to seek help from. From my experience I can see how serious the staff does not take their job. They definitely do not bring value to our community as police department staff. read more

The Secretary behind the glass is very rude and unprofessional. She didn't even try to help me, she was too busy looking at facebook on her phone, not even TRYING to hide the fact that she was not working and had the nerve to tell me she was "busy" multitasking. This is horrendous behavior for someone working at a police station. read more
