We were on the top floor. I believe the women's restroom was at the top of the stairs and the men's was at the bottom of the stairs. We had Haddock and Chips, Chicken Schnitzel, and a Chicken Burger ... and Irn Bru! There was a bit of a wait, because we arrived in the middle of lunch hour, but they got us in before the time estimate they gave us. The food was good, and there was a lot of beautiful woodwork to look at while we were waiting. This is a fairly well known place with historical significance, so if you're looking for a quiet place that's not busy, this isn't it. I liked the food. I liked the decor. Came in for lunch and so happy we did! The bar staff is so friendly. We were lucky to snag a seat in the bar area as a couple was just getting up. We started with two pints of lager which were cold and refreshing. I ordered the Steak and Ale pie and my hubby got the Pork and Haggis Sausage and Mash. Both were delicious. Light flaky crust and yummy steak and gravy inside. The extra gravy for the mash was fabulous! My hubby enjoyed his too. I thought the sausage was a bit mushy due to the Haggis but a good flavor overall. Highly recommend this pub on the Royal Mile! read more

Popped in for lunch with friends after poodling around all morning. Being mid-day the place was super busy but the sun, moon and stars aligned for us and a table opened up as we walked by-and it had a great window! I got the steak and ale pie- award winning! I learned to vent the pie before stuffing a forkful into my mouth; it was super hot. Once cooled to edible temperature, the pie didn't last long. It came with some carrots, mashed potato and gravy that went with everything. Just like my beer! I think the pies are the way to go here-2 of us got something different but I don't remember anything about those. You order at the bar and food is brought to the table. The staff was friendly enough but we didn't interact with them much. Prices were good for Edinburgh. read more

I rarely go to a spot that I have not Yelped or Google. I did not do either in this case since we were hungry and tired from the walking and a lot of the other restaurants we wanted to go to were closed. We were just glad to find this spot open and it ended up being a delightful lunch. a) This spot is over 200 years old and named after Brodies who the original Jekly and Hyde was based on. Super interesting, check out his story. b) The beer was refreshing and the food was really good. The rib eye pot pie was outstanding, the gravy and meat was delicious and the crust was perfectly flaky. The chicken bites had a sweet tangy taste which was great. c) I had sticky toffee pudding with custard instead of ice cream for the first time and it was yummy and so was the the brownie. On our last night in England, and after a full day of touring Edinburgh Castle, a couple of us decided to stop into this pub for a couple final pints and some bar food before calling it a day. We got there at the end of the business day and the bar was crowded with people having a drink at the end of the work day. Bar service was quick and friendly. The bar only serves bar snacks, and the restaurant upstairs has a full menu, since we weren't looking for a full meal, we stayed in the bar. In addition to a few pints, and some wine, we orders the nachos with pulled brisket. They were good, but the salsa was a little too sweet for some tastes. We also ordered the sticky chicken, which all agreed was excellent. A nice finish to a quick visit to Edinburgh. read more

Deacon Brodies Tavern is a historic pub and restaurant named after William Brodie, the real life inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Given its location on the Royal Mile, it's a super popular place for drinks downstairs and traditional Scottish dishes upstairs. I started with the Cullen Skink, a chowder made with skin-on potato chunks and smoked haddock in a creamy veloute sauce; and the Stovies, a stew of ground beef, beef chunks, potatoes, carrots, and thyme in a savory gravy, served with roasted carrots, long-stem broccoli, and crusty bread and butter. But the must-try national dish of Scotland is Haggis, a mixture of chopped lamb offal mixed with oats and cooked in a sheep's stomach, served with "neeps and tatties," or mashed turnips and mashed potatoes, along with a savory gravy. This was my first time trying this unique dish, and my first impression was that the oatmeal made up a much more significant part of the haggis than I had imagined, and the nutty oats were a nice complement to the salty chopped offal. While not something I would actively seek out again, this dish definitely made for a memorable eating experience in one of Edinburgh's famous pubs! read more

This is my second time back, the first time being 9 years ago. Showed up with a party of 4 on a Sunday night around 8. There was about a 20 minute wait and we were given a buzzer and told to wait in the pub area until our seats were ready. Service - 10/10. We were told as we were seated that they were out of the Cullen skink and 2 pies. We were disappointed because we came specifically to have the Cullen skink. Another server heard this and offered some other options. As we weighed our options he went to check and came back and told us they actually DID have it! Food - 6/10. We had 2 Cullen skinks, a haggis app, fish & chips, salmon patties, balmoral chicken and a shepherd pie like dish. The shepherds pie like dish was lukewarm, almost cold when it arrived. Everything else tasted just OK. Location wise it was perfectly on the royal mile and satisfied us for the night. read more

Europe 2023 - Edinburgh FAST Food: our first bland meal in the UK. I ordered the Ocean Fish & Chips and no amount of tartar or malt vinegar was going to add flavor. Although it was a good portion of food. The chicken sandwich was better, mainly because of the piece of bacon in the sandwich. The chips tasted freezer burned. I grabbed a Nicholson Pale Ale which was decent. Atmosphere: we grabbed a seat upstairs, with its low ceilings and old school vibe, it was very stuffy and sounded like a medical ward with everyone coughing, even the young lady handle the food from the conveyor. Service: our service from the young lady from the states was wonderful. Tips: if you can grab a table on the street or downstairs and ask for some kind of sauce to add flavor. read more

Stopped into Deacon Brodies on a very rainy Saturday night around 7 pm. Packed here, as was everywhere that night. We put our names in upstairs with a harried hostess and went downstairs to wait our estimated hour. Prepared to stand we lucked into a small bar table for two that someone was vacating and watched the show going on around us for an hour. No servers, you pick up your drinks at the bar and bus them when you're done. When our table was ready we went upstairs to find ourselves seated at a large table against the middle window which was great. The hostess was also taking orders (she was a hard worker!). We chose the Chicken & Truffled Oyster Mushroom Pie (chicken breast in a truffle & white wine oyster mushroom sauce, in a short crust pastry £17) and something else. The pie was nicely presented and delicious. The crowd had thinned out upstairs so 8 pm and later seems to be a good time to visit. read more

After a day long tour, Deacon Brodie's Tavern was a welcomed and convenient choice (right across the street for many tour meeting points). Grab a chair and menu, then order from the bar; or, go upstairs for sit down service. Easy peasy. I especially recommend the haggis even if you have never tasted it before. It comes with potatoes, neeps (smashed turnips), and gravy on the side. Delicious (without a hint of organ meat taste). After a pint of Guinness, and some other starters, we headed down the block to the taxi stand. Again, easy peasy. Up on the hill in Edinburgh? I've heard, watched, and read great things about this place, and was recommended to come here by several locals. It seems to have the sort of authenticity and air of provenance that the type of person who comes to Edinburgh is looking for. That being said, I was extremely disappointed. We (my partner and I) were in Edinburgh for about 5 days, so we'd walked by this place several times and knew better than to try to go in when it looked busy. We went in on a Wednesday sometime between 3 and 4:00 pm and there seemed to be an adequate amount of open tables throughout. We waited for the host behind another small group (3-4 people) for about 15-20 minutes while bussers and backs were staring at us trying their best to look "busy". When the host arrived, the group asked what the wait time would be and the host replied "honestly, it's going to be at least an hour, but it may be longer". I hadn't noticed, but there were several people queuing up behind us when we turned around to leave. I'm not sure what was going on that day, but whenever I'm back in Edinburgh, I'm definitely not going to Deacon Brodie's. I doubt my lack of potential future patronage will hurt their bottom line, but be prepared for a cartoonishly long wait even if there doesn't seem to be a lot of people there. read more

Super touristy area, buys place and mediocre food. Bar is hopping and good beers, hence my 2 star rating otherwise you can simply avoid this place altogether. It took over an hour for a table, then over an hour to be served food. We spent almost 3 hours in the middle of the day here when we'd have preferred to just grab street food and had the time back in our day. Fish and chips were edible. Burger was not and comes with smaller French fries than the fish and chips which were clearly better. read more

In addition, the stovies was perfect for a blustery evening which made the belly feel like there was a cozy fire inside. A side of chips were wonderful to mop up the extra gravy. We weren't sure what to expect when we visited knowing this is located right on the Royal Mile and there are tourists galore. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! We ordered one of the best whiskey old fashioneds (during our stay in the UK) at the bar while we waited for our table. We finished one drink and our table was ready. The staff seemed a bit busy (maybe understaffed) but our waitress was extremely attentive and friendly despite the challenges. We started with Haggis (yum!) and we each enjoyed our main meals: Stovies and Steak and Ale Pie. The pie crust in my pie was so flaky and buttery and the steak filling was so tender, like eating pot roast. Really freaking good!! My husband enjoyed his Stovies and fresh bread too. Along the Royal Mile, possibly at or near the Royal Halfway Mark. Still damp from steady morning showers and having to duck in and out of the Castle. A hunger and a thirst had built. Pub & Grub were without a doubt on the agenda. Many options had been passed over. Then, the skies cleared and a thin beam of sunlight moved onto Deacon Brodies Tavern sign (just kidding). If so, this could have been deemed a message from a higher authority. Regardless, the time was right and Deacon Brodies seemed popular. I was like a giddy child walking into a candy shop. The darkened tavern, lined with merry tables of pub goers. The taps were irresistible. I had to ask the bar keep about each tap and it's brew. The family went ahead to find a table and I assured them I'd be along shortly. Barman & I chatted for about 10 minutes and compared notes on IPA's, Stouts, Lagers, and European vs US brewing. "The family!" I remembered. I found them on the second level seated at a table and pouring over the menu. This room was brighter than downstairs and had a small balcony over looking the Royal Mile. Every table was taken and the servers moved non-stop. I quickly settled on a Cooked Steak and Mushroom Pie with mash, vegetables, and rich dark brown gravy. A pint of Whooa Porter and later a pint of Goldfinch IPA. The ladies, another Steak Pie, a Whitby Scampi, and a Crofter Pulled Lamb Pie. No dessert as we were all on the verge of "Pleasantly Plump." All plates were delicious and the pub environment set everyone up quite well for more shopping and sight seeing along the Royal Mile and into the New Settlement. read more

We had a great lunch at this historic and very touristy restaurant. Not my first pick in Edinburgh, given the fact that locals probably never go and it's overrun with out-of -towners, but the food and service were surprisingly good. I wanted to avoid the heavy meat dishes I'd been eating since our time in Scotland, so tried the vegetarian Puy lentil cottage pie with sweet potato topping, and thought they did a great job. The vegetable mix was fully flavored and rich, with a tasty sauce that was redolent of thyme and so delectably seasoned that I did not miss the protein at all. This was a satisfying and delicious meal. My husband had the chicken and truffled oyster mushroom pie with a short crust pastry, and said it was delicious. Our service was slightly harried, given how busy they were, but earnest and friendly. The tavern is a terrific spot for history buffs, so drink in the former times with your draught beer. read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend and has the greatest curb appeal and is as cute as haggis pie. There is a pub downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. We were starving and hungry for a good meal. Unfortunately that day their food distributors failed to deliver five of the ten entrees that they served. Needless to say the grief that the manager had was evident and I felt for him. On top of it the upstairs dining room was like a sauna and would you think it would be welcoming in the Scottish temperature, but this was literally like being in a sweat bath. We actually sat down and got up and left. But I couldn't leave that place without getting a pint of beer so we sat outside and enjoyed just that.
