I've been meaning to write this review for a while now. Words cannot express how excellent of a singing/vocal coach Deborah is. In my mind, my experience with my voice is very palpable under her guidance. She knows I struggle to use my voice, so here it goes bec I finally dare to share my gratitude. Before I met Deborah I could not sing for more than 10 minutes without feeling pain from strain. I had gone over 7 years thinking that there was something wrong with me and that I would never be able to sing without pain. I even had lessons with 4 other vocal coaches and nothing seemed to work, I really was at a point where I lost hope. Within 2-3 months of lessons with Deborah (and dedicated practice) I am now able to sing for over an hour without any pain, I doubled my range, and I've significantly smoothened the gap between my chest voice and head voice. Deborah is awesome! I started working with her in February and I've never had lessons or tried to take vocal lessons before. She was very patient with me, I told her what I would like to accomplish and she catered our lessons to the goals I earmarked. My daughter really wanted to keep up with the other kids who she has been auditioning with for musical theater. I cannot tell you what a difference a few months have made! My daughter used to be stuck in the ensemble cast. She had zero confidence. I just recently watched her audition for a Children's Musical Theater play. My daughter and I have both been taking lessons with Deborah Levoy for almost 3 months. We found her on a list of vendors for our charter school, so I looked up her website and decided to try her out. I'm singing and leading music at church now and needed to learn how to properly use my voice without ruining it with bad technique! My 16yo daughter loves to sing in choir and with other musical friends. From her website I got a good vibe. There are strong reviews from students there as well as some of her own recordings. We went and felt very comfortable in her neat, artsy, cozy studio. There is a place for a parent to sit inside to observe the lesson as well as a patio area outside with a view of the garden. It's always easy for us to park on the quiet street. Our first lesson was beyond my expectations. Deborah has a very clear understanding of how the voice works and is able to communicate this effectively. Since we can't see the instrument it helps to visualize what is happening. She listened to what we were hoping to accomplish and started us with vocal exercises that would help us to sing in a way that sounds authentic and is healthy for us. I am impressed with how she can listen to each voice and "see" what is happening to the vocal cords. She can quickly modify exercises to help us create the sound and understand how to get there again. Since then both my daughter and I have noticed our vocal ranges increasing (we are able to sing higher without totally going into our head voices) and our voices growing stronger in the "mix" range (mixing chest voice with head voice to keep the voice authentic.) I am so happy with our progress and look forward to what we will be able to do. I am a music teacher, with a music degree from SJSU, have been teaching piano and choir for years, have taken lessons from a number of teachers of both classical and contemporary styles and have sung in choirs for many years in high school and college. We discovered Deborah when searching for a vocal instructor for our 14-year old daughter after relocating to the Bay Area. My daughter is 9 years old and have been taking lessons with Ms Deborah Levoy for 2 years since she was 7. My daughter has been singing at events, musical plays, parties and even the National Anthems since she was 6. Now she is singing for professional sporting events like Golden State Warriors during their playoffs, Raiders, The America's Cup and more. At such a young age, I was worried about the health of my daughter's voice and I notice she would strain off the high notes and using all chest voice or flips to headvoice. So I did my research and found Deborah Levoy. Some vocal teachers say they don't teach until a certain age, but my belief is why not teach them the right way now than learn on their own the wrong way, do bad habits and damage their vocal chords. It is amazing how your voice works, I had no idea til I met Deborah. She taught my daughter how to move from chest voice to her upper register without the flips or breaks. My daughter now sings her high notes effortlessly and I've seen the difference, and is still learning. Ms Deborah goes in dept to teach you how your vocal chords work and gives you exercise to help train your voice to not strain and whatever you would like to work with. If you would like to work on a song for a musical play, a performance, whatever it is, she is there to help you. What my daughter also learned with Deborah is that it's not just about singing the song but understanding and telling the story with feelings. Ms Deborah would go line by line for the meaning, your pronouciation of the word, etc. She is amazing, my daughter loves her and felt comfortable with her right off the back. She cares about her students and it shows. Even though I feel that Nayah may have learned a lot, there are so much to learn about singing. Nayah is still growing and her voice will change throughout the year so Deborah is preparing her for when that time comes.
