Well here is a company which, for a fixed fee, combines online accounting (easy documentation for you) and an accountant that is easily accessible by phone - at no extra cost (hurrah). The company specialises in contractors, freelancers or people with their own ltd company. I signed up recently and found the whole process surprisingly easy: the staff were really friendly and helpful, the process was quick and they showed me how to save money in tax. Excellent!

Their system has serious flaws - their account reconciliation with your bank statements is horrid horrid horrid and never works, so you need to pay extra for a book keeper to do it for you, and they don't always do it properly. The system itself constantly sends out erroneous messages about things it thinks you need to do but have already done which, if you're anything like me and loathe accounting, is panic inducing. The one thing I'd say in its favour - invoicing and expensing is nice. That's it. I'm now researching alternatives.

She guided me patiently through the various current and savings account options without being pushy and I am very happy with the choices I made. I had to phone her back as I had a query and it was so nice to phone on a landline which was answered by a person straight away, without having to go through all the automated options first. I'd booked to access a notice account on the day of the run on Northern Rock, to pay my builders, and I therefore had to be part of those queues that we all remember from the TV. They handled that well enough. But I've used the place since, and the level of service has been appalling. For instance, I also have a loan at Northern Rock, and I was enquiring about paying it off early, which was a fairly complicated enquiry that took a couple of goes to get straight. But it shouldn't have been complicated - it wasn't until my third visit that somebody said NR loans are a different company from NR branches. I'd made a special trip in, and was fairly annoyed about this lack of information, and I literally received a shrug of the shoulders. This was months after the crisis, when things should have stabilised, but as far as I'm concerned, Northern Rock has gone down and down and down. It used to have quite an old fashioned feel to it, in that it was leisurely, concerned with service, and wanting to make the best of things for you. Not the best rates in the world, but extremely dependable. That has simply gone - though ironically enough, because of the government guarantee, its one of the safest places in the world to have your money.

For me, that is the best kind of bank. I have visited this particular branch with business related banking matters. The place is small and the staff both patient and informative (I often didn't know what I was doing there and asked to pet the sea lions). It is not as majestic, or bank-y as the other branch, but I liked this place while I was using it. It can get ridiculously busy at lunch time, so prepare for a queue, or better still, try and go when it's not peak hour. The machines and facilities also feel a little dated, but in a way, I kind of like that and it gives this place some charm!

"What a bank what a bank what a bank what a mighty good bank"…read more This is the type of innane song that may well be going though my head as I vacantly enter this HSBC to cash a cheque or take some money out. Though when I suddenly come to my senses with a jolt about 3 minutes later I might well question whether the song in my head actually corresponded with my own assessment of the bank. Usually the answer will be "No...I was simply just singing some Motown in my head, walked in the bank and changed the lyrics.." This particular answer is also applicable to this bank, as it does nothing different to any other bank I've been in. The staff look a bit like they want to just get home, and the red brick exterior doesn't promise any aesthetic architectural innovation to distract from the impending doom of my over draft. My view does change when I have money in my account though...weird that...!?
