Now, technically I probably could've gotten in trouble for coming here as it's supposed to be for Needham residents only, but I live in a nearby town, so didn't think it would be too big of a deal (and what, they're going to check an ID at a dog park?). This is a cool place off of Pine Street in the rural section of southern Needham close to the Dover line. It's accessible only via Central Avenue as Pine Street is a one way. Off Pine St, there are two signs, one white and one brown (as in the one of the pictures I uploaded), where you will turn onto a long, dirt road, filled with potholes, leading to the park as well as the Needham Community Farm at the end of the long road. There are two large fenced in areas for dogs. They are both good size and they both are extremely clean. There wasn't anyone else their when I arrived and left for that matter... so it's on the slow side, which can be a plus and a minus. Not much parking, but a small amount at the entrance and I think you can park a bit farther down the road in a large paved area. Overall, 4 star dog park. Better than some of the others I've visited, and in comparison, not as good as others. 4 stars.

Most of the people are friendly, there are nice dogs of all sizes to greet and there is a mix of flat and hilly areas depending on your dog's energy level (and yours). Tip: avoid the pond area, it is pretty swampy!

Sometimes I forget to take a water bottle for my dog and if nobody brings water, dogs are thirsty. In other dog parks that I have been to there were fountains for dogs. It was in Florida tho. Overall, this place is good. During the winter, the ground becomes super slippery like on the skating rink. After the rain, it is kind of dirty in there. My dog looks like a pig. But those are weather conditions and it does not relate to my review. It is just a sharing of the experience that people can be prepared for it.

Mirroring what others have said, you have to walk around the initial large dog park to get to the small - this typically involves some big ones lumbering over and following you down the fence as they eye your little nugget lol. I liked that there were multiple benches for owners to sit on as well as tires, pipes and rocks for the dogs to play around. Not sure about the large park, but the small park has a water faucet to keep your pups refreshed - just bring a portable bowl. Plenty of parking spots at the entrance if you drive over. Owner said, after the fact, "oh he doesn't like kids". Not a single person tried to help us while my husband and I were trying to hold our son up and the dog kept jumping at him. The Parks Commissioner Banks from the City of…read moreNewton excludes everyone from use of the park unless they pay $70-$75 dollars for a dog license and permit " medallion." They charge $100.00 for any dog from outside of Newton to use the park. The park is very muddy and appears to be in part in Brighton. (Elmhurst Rd is end of Newton). The Parks hired a park ranger to issue fines unless all dogs have permits. The dog license is $20.00 and excludes all use of public parks (Off leash)

Noanet Woodlands is another favorite woodsy area to add to my list (another recent favorite is…read moreanother Trustees property in Andover, the Ward Reservation). The two are somewhat similar with different color coded trails and a trail to reach a summit for the skyline of Boston (I didn't check that out here at Noanet Woodlands for this trip). I enjoyed coming here on the weekend: it was moderately trafficked (which I like so it's not *too* isolated), and easy/moderate trails (I prefer long, ambling hikes). The only thing is that the orange trail I took was a bit confusing/not super clear. The overall system does a good job, but I would be sure to download a map/have AllTrails active to ensure you don't end up in the wrong spot. I fortunately ran into some folks who helped me get back on track, but a heads up that it could get confusing as it did for me. Otherwise, a wonderful shady (important to know on hotter days) set of trails that I would recommend!
