I was so excited when I finally found this little shop after wandering around the time zone that is Afflecks Palace. This place sells all the favs from dip daps, nerds and wham bars to 10 flavours of bon bons, midget gems, pineapple cubes, lager tops and so on and on and on and on..... all priced at 75p per 100g! They should change the saying from "cheap as chips" to "chip as the sweets in Retro Sweets in Afflecks Palace". A big surprise was the selection of Wonka sweets available. I have only ever seen a few varieties in Selfridges but this was just simply amazing! I can't even remember the names of them there were so many! We came away with a bag full of sweets for only £4 and were well happy! :) Shall be my new fav sugar haven.

I can spot American candy a mile a way and sometimes it is nice to have a childhood favourite. When you walk in, it is just bright colours and sugar everywhere! They have all sorts of sweets, but of course, my attraction was to the American items... they had candy bars: Butterfinger, Baby Ruth (my personal favourite), Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey's Bars, Peanut Butter M&Ms, Crunchy M&Ms, and Coconut M&Ms. They had Nerds and I thought I saw Laffy Taffy, but I could have just been dazzled by it all. They had Lucky Charms cereal bars and about four different kinds of Pop Tarts. They also had American pop (or soda... whatever you call it): Mello Yellow, Mountain Dew, Jolly Rancher flavoured pop (but no actual Jolly Ranchers), different flavours of Dr Pepper, Sunkist Grape Soda... but I don't think I saw any Root Beer or Creme Soda... Regardless, they had a pretty good selection and the staff members were very friendly. An American candy bars are not super cheap because they are imported, but at £1.80, it was about the same as everywhere else I have purchased my guilty pleasures!

Sugacane sweet shop .Wow what a sweet shop,this has to be the largest sweet shop i have ever…read moreseen.They had a lollpop section with at least 150 different lollies.I had to buy a sugalikker gin and tonic flavour and my partner purchased lager and lime sweets !! We then could not help but to indulge in the handmade chocolate counter and spent a fortune,but believe me when we tucked into them they were well worth it !!

I love the aesthetic of the shelfs with the glass…read morejars filled with sweets! the staff are all very nice and friendly. the hot chocolates are amazing I've become a fan of the vegan hot chocolate personally but I ask for it extra milky and the staff are happy to oblige me. the location of the shop is perfect sometimes i bring a reusable cup and ask for my hot chocolate in said cup then go for a walk around the botanical gardens. oh! And they have ice creams in the summer that are to die for! i tell all my friends its a must if your visiting Sheffield.

You can buy handmade chocolates, penny sweets, speciality chocolates such as chili or spanish drinking chocolate...... In the back room they sell flavoured teas and you can sit and have a gorgeous cup of cocoa, served with a tiny nutmeg shaver and spices to add yourself. They also do chocolate parties which sound like my idea of heaven!

I don't know how famous Brown's Famous Sweet Shop is...I may be well out of the loop but I'm afraid…read moreto say I hadn't heard the word on the street till I recently sauntered past and checked out their sugar-coated wares. YUM. For any sweetie fans Brown's should do the trick. They have many a large plastic jar of colourful scrumptious bits and bobs priced by weight, like in the good old days. Most are priced at 70p per 100g...not too bad...though hard to compare with the sweetie weighing of my childhood as I'm pretty sure the shops still used pounds and ounces or somesuch - we usually bought a quarter. Happy days...when chocolate bars were like 23p! Sigh. They also do 5 packets of crisps for £1 (including Doritos) which seems pretty bargainous considering 1 packet is probably nearing 50p at most shops these days. They also sell bars of chocolate of various sizes, a pre-packed sweetie selection of the kind you'd find in your average newsagent and boxes of chocolates for that quick and easy gift solution. So if that sweet tooth is demanding a feed and you fancy a bit of a trip down memory lane gazing wide-eyed at rows of plastic jars, Brown's Famous Sweet Shop could be just the ticket!

With the obligitory jars and jars of old school favourites and newer sweets, there are great deals to be had here. With signs plastered all over the display, you get a rough idea of how much it is you are likely to be charged, which is something that sweet shops have sometimes neglected in the past, in my experience- prompting you to gasp when you realise you've spent over a fiver on sweets... A healthy mix between the old school sweet stall and something a little more up to date, Brown's may not be as 'famous' as it oddly claims to be in it's over ambitious self-proclaimed title, but it's worth the dosh if you have a sweet tooth, and gets a thumbs up from me.

Honestly, those days did once exist. And they were brilliant, let me tell you. We're talking bon bons, liquorice, chocolate buttons and far more besides. I love all of those things. They also sell a range of drinks, crisps and chocolates that are more like the regular confectionary you find nowadays. Sweet Sensations is located in the bustling food hall in the Arndale Centre.

I remember the original Mansfield shop when it was just off Albert street, Where Lucy's caffee is now. If you went any time after twelve, you wouldn't be able to get any sausages, would have been all sold out....What is Christmas going to be with out sausages and their sausage meat? My mother always cooked the sausages around the turkey, as I do now (did) and believe it or not they tasted even better!!!! And as for the sausage meat, fry a chopped up onion till soft, when cool enough add the sage and onion stuffing, then the pound of birds sausage, mix all together with a beaten egg. Put in a tin loaf and bake for about 50 mins..that and the sausage was the best thing about Christmas. That also was my Mothers recipe.. I always remember if I got asked to get some sausages from Birds by my Mother, when asking in the shop I always made a point of saying "pound of BIRDS sausages please" had to say Birds just in case they tried giving me any other, not that they had any other mind, but I didn't know that as a youngster, but didn't want to chance it not getting my favourites... Any one asking me 2what's your favourite food?" always answered " my mams meat pie, and birds sausages... ...Where's it gone wrong? you wonder. well in my opinion the quality of the sausage has been messed with over the past couple of years, you fry them and they split because of the quality, Once when you cut the cooked sausage with your knife, it was smooth as it was full of meat, now when you do the same it was crumbly, as it was filled with what ever it was I don't know. they were started to make the sausages too big, you would ask for a pound of them and maybe only get about 4, which turned out to be pretty expensive...I think if they had kept the good quality sausages, as I remember them, people would have kept buying. Other shops expensive shops have survived, the recession, look at the other Baird's shops the bakery one in Mansfield, they are very expensive but sell out in no time..Can't tell you how sad I am about the outcome of all this. lets hope they work it out get back to basics with top notch quality sausages... yours sincerely Kate T
