I've been training for a lil over 7 years now and I've been around a few jiu jitsu academies. I'm very fortunate to have trained under schools that nourish a positive environment and promote growth both on the individual level and of course on the jiu jitsu level. I am very confident and happy to say that I've found that nourishing environment here at Legend Jiu Jitsu of Tacoma (an affiliate of Atos). If you are familiar with top bjj schools then you already should be familiar with the name Atos, as they've produced top ranked world champions. Prof Noa and Prof Vic are two of the most fundamentally sound and technical jiu jitsu black belts that I've ever experienced. You can tell that their style is suitable for everyone and if you are looking to grow your jiu jitsu game or are curious to see what it is all about, these two gentlemen would be the perfect teachers to start you on your journey. Coach Ben, (may look intimidating when you see him) but he is genuinely one of the nicest humans I have ever met. He is also very fundamentally sound and he teaches the morning classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. He is a sponge that is capable of absorbing all of what Prof Noa teaches and he is able to re-teach and demonstrate those sound techniques in the morning class. I should say that I am currently a purple belt, and I am confident my jiu jitsu journey and practice will grow exponentially from training here. In addition to a very clean and well groomed facility, all of the students at this academy whether they are white belts to black belts are ego-less and that is what you want in a jiu jitsu school.

I'm a little nervous with contact sports and want my kid to be safe. So it was important to find a gym that had the knowledge and experience to teach my child the right way. When we walked into the Hammerhead Mixed Martial Arts gym, there were many members training, some in gi's and some in plain workout clothes, but everyone was engaged and the atmosphere seemed relaxed and friendly. Joey, the owner and head coach was able not only to answer all my questions but also educate me and gave me advice for what to look out for in a mixed martial arts place. He didn't seemed concerned for me or to sign up with him but rather to sign up with a martial arts gym that can do more harm than good. We got a seven day free trail and my son was able to try out every class Joey teaches. Long story short, we signed up. We felt part of the team from day one and everyone is helpful and patient with my son. I learned later how much experience in various contact sports the trainers have and how well they apply their techniques to teaching. I am very confident that my son gets the right training, support and is in a safe environment with the best trainers. He is excited about his progress in his training and enjoys being at Hammerhead Mixed Martial Arts. Definitely recommend it!

He was not given the attention or direction he needed. He was ignored, told to practice some move alone, or told to be quiet and just watch and follow along while he felt lost. I repeatedly told the owner that my kid was overwhelmed, confused, left alone, and bored. Each time I brought it up, the only response was "well he can quit but you still have to pay because you signed a 6 month contract." The experience of my child was of no importance to them, only the money which they'd get either way. They never addressed or acknowledged any of our concerns. We carried on for a couple months but it only got worse with my kid getting so anxious and crying/begging not to have to go to karate and asking everyday after school if this was a day he had to go. We wanted him to learn discipline and self confidence but this experience was the opposite. I still think he would thrive at another dojo but now he is too traumatized to try again, and we're stuck paying these folks. Stay away from Steve Curran.

I started off fairly skeptical, but this place has 100% won me over. I have watched the growth in our son, the other students, and the younger instructors- the typically high school aged black belts are usually the instructors for the youngest students. It has been amazing to watch all the students there grow into their responsibilities, to begin taking their training seriously, to gain a strong understanding of respect, and to engage in difficult activities and use failure as a learning tool and not a defeat. You earn each stripe on your belt, and the owners and instructors have high expectations of all who walk through the doors. But those expectations are backed up by support, solid instruction, and recognition of achievement. Couldn't be happier with the program.
