When is the YMCA going to be open on Sunday? Funny how the rates have gone up although there are four less days that you are able to use the YMCA. I don't think COVID has anything to do with being closed on Sunday, pretty sure it's being used as an excuse. Lots of members will be joining other facilities that are open on Sundays. They will start loosing members which is very sad. This is very Important for people's mental health. read more

I'm a heapin' big fan of this place. Really nice equipment, very friendly staff, reasonable fees, and a sincere feeling of community and diversity among the membership. Better still, even at peak hours, it's really not that crowded. I've never had to wait that long for a machine and rarely have to share a lane in the pool. Also, I have a feeling I've just barely scratched the surface of what they have to offer as far as fitness training goes (thus far I mostly just lift weights and swim laps or huff and puff on a stationary bike). No photos to post...the gym is a cell-free zone to preserve privacy and to avoid people being creeps. Once I have been a member there for a good long while, if I should miraculously shred myself into a rippling, undulating wall of lean muscle mass, I'll post a few gratuitous "after" shots. Too expensive, even after paying the monthly membership some facilities such as swimming pool is limited due to classes.

My family have been memebers here for as long as I can remember but just recently my husband and I started going regularly because my memebership is included in my UW-T tuition. This is beside the point, My husband is a type 1 diabetic and tonight we were working out when his blood sugar began to drop very quickly. He brings Gatorade and juice in case this happens but it wasn't helping. I went and asked the front desk if they had any extra snacks or something and I have never seen a group of people jump into action so quickly. Before I knew it, one guy was running up to his locker, another went to check on my husband and the 3rd young woman looked through her bag for a candy bar. It was really incredible and meant so much. My husband was okay and it wasn't to the point he needed any kind of help, just a snack, but they treated it like It was and for that I am so grateful! Thank you Tacoma Center YMCA! read more

I was traveling and spent 10 days in Tacoma and needed a facility to continue my workout routine. I'd also been suffering from shin splints due to over running. They had all the necessary free weights and nautilus style machines for strength training. In addition they also had many cardio machines that I could work around my injury as well as an entire room dedicated to stretching and self care! The facility was clean and organized. What really stood out was the staff!! Great customer service and very kind! I'll definitely return my next stay in Tacoma! read more

I've been a member of the Ymca before which was a great place for community engagement with a variety of classes to participate in. What's not good is the membership cost! I had to leave the Y for work, after 90 days you have to pay again 99.00 for the membership cost. They also penalize you on your age if your over the age of 30 it's 59.00 a month. If your under 30 it's 44.00. They are the most expensive gym in the tacoma area, they really need a market analysis on average gyms cost which is between 10-35 dollars a month at any age. And also consider the cost of living. Your not going to get any help here if your middle class which is disappointing. Regardless of my low review If your low income or cost is not an issue for you check out the Y, when I was a member the staff and equipment was great and for the most part clean. I also met a lot of great people. read more

I LOVE THE TACOMA CENTER Y! I feel like I live here, as I spend so much time here. The staff is amazing. I feel like this Y really tries to think of different ways to incorporate it's members. From Young Adults events, to knitting, to bingo, they are always trying to make the gym going experience more than just a workout. I love Kristines Zumba class on Mondays and Wednesdays. She gets us dancing like we are at Carnival. Danny has a great Abs and Glutes class right before Kristines class and he motivates us through inspiring quotes as well as gets us bikini ready. I also love the spinning classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Though the instructors have been changing recently, I have been exposed to many different styles of spinning and have learned some very practical tips if I ever decide to begin riding outside. There is also a fun circut class that is Monday Wednesday and Friday, although I only am able to do Friday's class occasionally. It's a great class to end the week. The women's weight room upstairs is great. I love having a place to workout where I don't hear all the grunting sweaty men do their workouts! The gym itself is pretty small, but I feel like they use the space well. As a former competitive swimmer I wish the pool was a bit bigger but it gets the job done. One other thing that makes this Y so attractive to me is that though I love kids, and work with youth as part of my job, I love that kids under 15 aren't allowed on week days. It offers a calmer atmosphere and also attracts a more youthful group of people. I have made a lot of friends here and I hope to make more! read more

So I started going to the Y back in October. So far, I had been pretty impressed. There is an ample supply of cardio equipment with TVs. The classes are excellent. The staff members are very friendly and always smiling. They are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and even offer special holiday classes. On Thanksgiving there was a pre-feast calorie burner workout, and on Christmas Eve they offer peaceful yoga. They also have a running track, basketball court, racquetball courts, weight machines, swimming pool, and more. I truly have not been able to take full advantage of everything they offer, but hopefully I can start using the pool soon. Here are my complaints. First, the parking situation sucks. There is a pathetically small parking lot adjacent to the Y. However, the spots are almost all taken all the time. I have seen cars in the driveway just sitting and waiting for a spot to open. There is street parking, however that as well can be hard to get. Market Street will soon be metered so street parking will not be free starting in January. Second, starting in January they are increasing their rates. In a recession!?!? Shame on the Y! My salary has actually decreased and they are increasing dues?!? I plan to submit an application for financial aid in the hopes that my monthly fees will be lowered. read more

Personally not my favorite Y. The steam room wasn't automatic, had to go in and out to push a button to keep it on (annoying) ... Bathrooms weren't clean and I was charged for towels when all the other facilities have never done that. The front desk guy wasn't very genuine and was kinda rude. Hate to complain but me and my friend definitely didn't feel welcomed. read more

I have gone to Y's all over Southern California and a few in Seattle, and this is definitely the nicest one I've ever come across. Firstly, there are tons and tons of cardio machines. Some are out in obvious places, huddled together and usually snatched up quickly, but some are hidden on the second floor and in other workout rooms. They update their equipment constantly, and always seem to have the coolest, newest machines. If one is broken or down, they do their best to fix it within the week. There are also tv's attached to practically every machine, which is a huge incentive for me to get off my butt and work out. Secondly, it's dirt cheap. My boyfriend and I are on the couples plan and it's around $40 a month for the both of us, which is unheard of elsewhere. With all of the classes, equipment, cleanliness of location and convenient hours, I'd probably pay way more to go here! (But don't tell them that!). Thirdly, the staff is ridiculously helpful and sweet...sometimes too sweet. If I'm in a rush or a crummy mood, I'll sometimes run off and try and avoid their smiling faces. But seriously, if anything's up with your account, you forget your card, or a machine is wacky, they're eager to help you. I'm not sure any more justification is necessary, but the location is definitely a plus as well, as lots of people live or work fairly close to the excellent downtown spot. read more

I live around downtown Tacoma and wanted to find a gym where I could walk to regularly. So the location is perfect for me, but the biggest selling point has to be the low monthly fee ($35/month for those under 30 y/o with $75 one time sign up fee) with no contract. There's even more discount if one of your family members is affiliated with Ft. Lewis. It's not one of those fancy gyms, but they do provide sweat towels and shower towels for you. And don't forget to bring a lock for the locker. The facilities seem up-to-date: the treadmills and ellipticals on the main floor all have individual TVs attached to them, they have plenty of weight machines, squash courts, and they just finished doing some work with the pool today. But I'm more into classes and was glad to discover that they have plenty of those as well. I just went to one of them tonight and it was a lot of fun. I'm planning to go to another one tomorrow. read more

I like this Y. I go to the Zumba and Abs classes a couple times a week and the intructors are really friendly and the classes are great because people from every physical ability level can feel comfortable. This isn't one of those gyms where you walk in and feel puny because there are huge body builders everywhere or feel fat compared to the perfectly trimmed Olympic-looking athlete running ever so elegantly on the treadmill with her fuzzy pink Juicy Couture iPod. This is a place where anyone can go and feel comfortable which I think is great. Gyms can be pretty intimidating sometimes. Definitely check out the classes they offer. They're a lot of fun, they motivate you to go to the gym on a regular basis, and they're a great way to make gym buddies! read more

I just tried to sign up using my company benefits and the lady at the front desk was extremely impatient. I was attempting to gather the information she requested and basically asked me to leave and come back when I was better prepared. Definitely will not be returning. I'll stick with my regular Tacoma gym - Fit Republic. It's a short Lyft ride away, but the staff is at least very pleasant and I'm not made to feel unwanted. read more

This is one of my favorite gym locations of the Tacoma-Pierce & Kitsap County YMCAs because it's centrally located in the downtown core & is adults-only during the week. The classes remind me of grown-up-PE: always fun and a great way to meet others. When I first joined the Y here in the area 20-years ago, this branch location was my "2nd home" as the Univ of Washington downtown Tacoma didn't have a gym. At the time, I was a poor, college student, and the Y doesn't turn anyone away if you can't afford the monthly dues. They created a sliding-scale fee that fit my budget, and I loved getting to know the people in my classes, they became some of my best friends today, 20 years later! The staff helped create a workout routine that helped me achieve my fitness goals. Now, I'm on the volunteer side & help the Y raise money as there's a lot of members & families on financial assistance throughout Tacoma/Lakewood area. The best part about joining is you're always welcome at any Y, and there's tons of local branches in the area, including a couple in Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Sumner, Gig Harbor & Silverdale. This Y branch downtown Tacoma has had several updates and remodels and I love the improvements. The classes here are still my favorites; I only wish I was working, living, or attending school downtown where this location is closer to my current life. The pool is not too-crowded for swimming laps, the noon classes or early-morning classes are great, and I miss the after-work classes as they are super social. The staff are always friendly, warm, welcoming and engaging when you're shy about being in a new class. I always feel welcome here & this branch to me is like going home! read more

I've been a member of the Y in Minneapolis and Seattle, so when I moved to Tacoma it was the obvious choice. But the parking is a nightmare (and scary for me late at night), and the hours are terrible. While some of the staff are great, others are downright snipish. The worst part of the Y was that I always had to wait for machines, often for a long time. I tried to organize my schedule around "rush hour" and the classes were often overcrowded. For a year I paid over $100 a month for myself, my partner, and our daughter to be members, but now I'm paying $28/month at Tacoma Allstar with great classes and machine access. I love it! It was nice supporting the Y--it does good community work. But I'm an athiest anyway. ;-) read more

My family was turned away because this is a 15 and up facility. Very disappointing because this is the closest Y with a pool. It would make more sense for the University location but this one is full of old people. I don't get it. But oh well, someone will probably sue their asses for discrimination anyway read more

Admittedly, I haven't been to many other gyms, but the downtown Tacoma YMCA is where I prefer to be. I'm pretty sure it's adults only, at least during the week, which is awesome. They just updated all their equipment this year, and renovated several areas of the gym last year. The people there are friendly and I always feel welcome. I rarely park in their lots, but I never have a problem finding a spot on the street either in front of or behind the building (it's free). In terms of classes, I recommend Sunday afternoon gentle yoga, and Thursday evening indoor cycling. There are a ton of other classes to choose from, including Zumba, abs and glutes, and boot camp, but I have yet to try those. Also, if personal training if your thing, I recommend Lisa Hunt! She's fantastic. She pushes me but also takes care of me. There was one session in particular where I was feeling really lightheaded and weak, and she pulled an apple out of her bag and let me have it. I've lost more than 25lbs since I started seeing her in May 2011. read more

This is a nice little gym that caters to folks who live and work in downtown Tacoma. I like the fact that most of the people who tend to work out here are professional types who are trying to sneak in a work out while on a break. The machines are in good shape and they seem to be updating them fairly regularly. The staff has always been nice and helpful and there seems to be a nice variety of classes at different time of the day. Yes, the building is a little old and parking is kind of hit or miss, but I'm more than happy with everything else. read more

I didn't utilize my membership to this gym nearly as much as I should have, but regardless, it's a good spot. The facilities were very nice and well maintained, the price was fair (and I hear they are very good about giving assitance to families in need), and there was a subway INSIDE the place... (By the way, I'm not entirely sure I'm talking about the right YMCA so apologies if there isnt in fact a subway in this one - but the one I went to had one)... Anyways, it was never overly crowded to the point of discomfort and they offered plenty of classes and programs, etc. Give it a try... You just might love it. read more

Great gym. this doesn't feel like a normal Y. I'm not saying "normal" Ys are bad, but they generally feel like community hangout spots with workout equipment. That is awesome and I'm not knocking it, but this Y feels like a true, adult gym. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It just has a great vibe and all the equipment a person can need. My workout schedule is somewhat erratic, but I've never had to wait for weights or machines, not for more than a minute or two, anyway. read more

Great convenient location. Good parking options, especially for the location in town that it is. Took a core class with the teacher Danny who is so sweet and takes the time to get to know everybody who takes his class, and remembers you and your name! Truly cares about his class and the people! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the layout downstairs with the cardio machines facing each other is super awkward. I don't love being on the elliptical while staring into the face of someone on a bike 2 feet in front of me, all while being in the middle of the entire flow of traffic of the gym members going in and out of the front door and bathrooms. read more

Very welcoming place. I think it is absolutely fantastic that they allow young people to play basketball into the evening hours to keep them off the streets! The staff is great for the most part, all smiles and good vibes. My only complaint is a group of crossfit guys and gals that seem to work out for 5 min and stretch and show off their tight cloths for a few hours and get in everyone's way. This is the second YMCA I've been to in Pierce County. So far I like it. I am not sure why everyone said that the staff is rude. The associate that helped me today was very professional and nice. Yes, it can use some updating, but realistically this isn's LA Fitness, and you aren't paying a ton of $$ either. The other customers were also pleasant. The music was fun too. For those that want more tv or cable on the machines or tv's, well maybe you should stay home then. A plus is that there wasn't a ton of little kids running around like the Lakewood YMCA. Your there to focus and get your work out on. Overall this is a nice YMCA and I like the option to work out at others also. read more

I really like this facility it's clean and I really like the new updates. My friend used to volunteer for the teen Friday nights made me what to volunteer to so I went to see how it is I would go there to hang out. It's fun to watch all the children have fun playing basketball and doing some exercising instead of being on their phones and watching television. I usually go there when it opens so I can really get my work outs out of the way. I will continue going here for my daily work out. read more

I signed up in January at the Morgan family YMCA and I paid for three months. The guy at the downtown ymca a week ago said if I pay cash I need to pay 6 months, which I intended to due today. The lady at the counter couldn't understand that and told me that I should go back to Morgan to pay my bill. After about five minutes of me trying to explain that I would like to give her cash towards my account, she made me change my payment plan and only let me pay for three months... When she passed me the bill there was the total amount for six months like I intended pay?! Why couldn't I just pay six months?! This girl was also having trouble calculating the months on the calendar... She was pretty and pretty dumb... read more

Great place to workout! Love how centrally located they are! And it's always clean, you never have to be worried about the cleanliness of he equipment. Their class schedule is really open too, they have at least 15 spin classes per week -- so great for a busy schedule! Definitely would recommend to friends! read more

Great place! Great staff! Great patrons! It's got good equipment, an array of aerobic machines and a wide range of classes and class schedules. If something doesn't fit, you can go to one of two other Ys that are within a few blocks to a few miles. And really, I love the adult only aspect, especially in the pool. read more
