Appetizer of fresh hummus, red pepper/chili paste, fresh tzaziki, green olive salad, garlic carrots and walnut chili paste

I selected Defne out of a guidebook, being in search of some flavors hard to find in my home state of Oregon. The restaurant was small and intimate, but well staffed with efficient service. Ambiance was dark and made reading/translating the menu a little challenging, so being adventurous my selections were made with a general "jist" of featured ingredients. The appetizer sampler platter was wonderful. There was fresh hummus, red pepper/chili paste, fresh tzaziki, green olive salad, garlic carrots and walnut chili paste with slices of tomato and cucumber. I shared a plate of jumbo prawns sauteed in tomato, onion, and other veggies, with rice and salad as an entree. Prawns were excellent, and the sauce very tasty. Dessert was walnut stuffed figs with chocolate and vanilla sauces. Really wonderful meal, and fully enjoyed!

Baked seafood with tomatoes, vegetables, cheese

Defne is a sit-down Turkish restaurant located near the Turkish market in Kreuzberg. The food and atmosphere here are definitely higher class than the ubiquitous Döner kebab stalls found all over Berlin. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived for dinner, but we were fine with sitting inside and got a table right away. We started with an order of the Karisik Deniz Güveci, a mixed seafood dish baked with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cheese. This was a fantastic dish--the vegetables were plentiful and fresh, and the tomato-based sauce was very reminiscent of Italian flavors. We also had the Ali Nazik ("der Vornehme Ali" in German), grilled strips of lamb with rice and salad. While the lamb was peppery and flavorful, it was also a little bit tough, but it went very well with the subtle flavors of the eggplant puree and the cooling yogurt sauce. The service here was accommodating and attentive as well, despite the large number of guests that were also there. Overall, while this dinner was delicious, it might not have been my favorite, as it seems that Turkish street food in Berlin is where the best flavors (and value for money) can be had.

Food is delicious.. Service is so-so. Worth going to for the food, if you find yourself in Kreuzberg.

We had the octopus and meze plate as starters, and the hellenische chicken, "Ali Nazik" (lamb with eggplant), and oven baked seafood with feta.

The meal was 10/10 and the ambiance and service were the icing on the cake. We were fortunate to enjoy the beautiful outdoor seating as it was a warm evening. We ordered 3 dishes to share in my party of two and each was a flavorful delight. We also had some fantastic craft cocktails to complement our meal. This is a hidden gem in the city and I highly recommend as it was one of the best meals I had over the 5 evenings I was in Berlin.

The menu is extensive and provides dishes for sharing. Menu is also fairly priced. 1. Zucchini burrata - update to a previous item. Now with a whole burrata which complements the sauce, tomatoes and zucchini. Very good! 2. TLV shrimps - came with a topping of cheese, just the way I like it! Underneath, 5-6 shrimps cooked well and the sauces it comes with were amazing. From the pesto, to tomato, to chili oil. 3. Beirut nights - Not too sweet. The sweetness comes from the rose water syrup outside. It provides good sturdy texture for the dessert itself. Overall, very good place to come and would gladly come back again if I lived in Berlin!

I don't know how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars; if I could give it 6, I would…read more First: the food is absolutely delightful. There are tons of options, including many vegetarian ones, and I have yet to try a dish that wasn't beautifully made, with balanced, light flavors. There are lots of beans, lentils, vegetables, yogurt-based sauces, olives, cheeses, stews, bread, tea, three or four variety of starchs--rice, couscous, bulgur, etc-, burek, fried stuff, baked stuff, boiled stuff.... Sometimes, if I need to eat one meal in a day, I'll go here. Second: the people that work here come from various places--Turkey, Lebanon, Germany, Cuba...ALL of them (that I've met) are friendly, generous, and welcoming (and patient as I point at the different foods to pile my plate with!). The atmosphere of the restaurant is awesome: a clean, simple yet warm vibe, classical music playing, and a back room where you can look onto the back yard. Third: you are getting ALL of this for either 7 or 9 Euro. I come from NYC, where one can easily--and in fact often does--pay twice that amount for food half as good. SUPPORT places like this, that offer lovingly made, healthy, delicious food for good prices....this is my favorite restaurant BY FAR in the neighborhood, and there are many other good ones here. I've brought about 4 friends here and all of them have been blown away...one even told me the next day, "dude, I can't stop thinking about that restaurant!".
