Many times the examples are see from quite a distance and out of sight with only pictures or descriptions to see. This park has some of the best up close views of artwork thousands of years old. Think about this for a moment. Some humans painted on cave walls many thousands of years ago and they are still on those cave walls for us to observe today! How remarkable is that? The staff is not the most personable compared to many others I've interacted with but they are very knowledgeable and helpful. There are a number of day hikes available here as well but I only took the guided tour down into the canyon so I can't speak to any of the other hikes available. Overall a good afternoon outing.

A park ranger accompanied us to explain the low water of the Lower Pecos River Canyon, the flora, fauna, and loads of history. Our tour guide/park ranger was nice, friendly, and super knowledgeable. I loved seeing all of the pictographs still intact after so many years. My favorite thing about the tour was when shown replicas of what the past inhabitants ate and how they would survive on the land. The rock art was painted on limestone which was easier to preserve for longer periods. My brother and I even camped in the park. The campsites are spacious and private from any neighboring campers. The site we had came with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a designated spot for the tent. If you are into fossils and geology and are a history buff, I would check out this state park. It is one of the coolest Texas state parks. It does not get as crowded since it isn't considered as popular as the others. I loved seeing the fossils embedded into the limestones and seeing so many sotol plants and arid plants thriving out in the weather. Do make sure that you bring plenty of water as the heat is more dry than humid. There is no shade only if you get under the canyon to view the paintings. The hike can be rugged and steep, you may not need trekking poles throughout the walk, but going down the stairs into the canyon can be tricky if you aren't prepared.

We rented four kayaks, 2-diablos amigos and 2- Jackson Bite Anglers from Amistad Expeditions and…read moreused them to shuttle us to and from the river. Jarrett our shuttle driver was fantastic with lots of Information and stories. Our 2-nights and 3-days on the river were unbelievable. The water, stars, scenery, and quiet were everything and more than we expected. Being first time white-water kayakers we read and watched everything we could over the last 6-months but we were still very inexperienced and thus our reliance on the outfitter. However the equipment was not up to par. All four kayaks had issues and so did all four oars and the spare. Busted tie down netting, missing oar tie downs, duct taped oars, missing or torn rubber grips and keepers on the oars and one chair missing half the top frame which made for a very uncomfortable seat. We ended up duct tapping one life preserver to the seat back to make it bearable. The storage compartment gaskets on the Diablos were torn with chunks missing so water in those two kayaks was a constant issue. We had dry bags but draining these two kayaks to keep them at least partially controllable was a chore. We obviously should have been more observant at the facility but the kayaks and equipment were already loaded on the trailer and when we did point out the seat problem at the drop off spot it was too late for us or Jarrett to do anything about it. We definitely learned our lesson not to trust this outfitter with the equipment they rent. You need to check everything before you leave their shop. I gave them 2-stars because In spite of the equipment issues it is a fantastic experience. Enjoy, but do your inspections!!!

When we visited, the rangers/staff were happy to see us and were very kind. The displays take up most of one room but were definitely worth a quick stop and check. We especially liked the artifacts and reproductions of artifacts. Those are always interesting to see. They also had a display of animal skulls and tracks that I'm sure younger kids would have been even more fascinated than me. Well, my 12 year old brain enjoyed them and was amazed at how fierce something that size seems. If visiting the area, check it out next time.
