Thanks to Chilly Billy, I toured the back roads of Clarksdale with him in his red jeep, and learned so much about the people and history of the Misissippi Delta. He is a wonderful tourguide, full of real knowledge, with his own connection to the area and was very personable and candid with his own stories and we stopped, got out of the jeep on a few occasions, so I could take pictures and get a lay of the land. He is a great communicator, and I knew he had recently published a book called, Wrestling with Wisdom at The Crossroads. I bought it, amd have been reading it. This is a once in a lifetime type of tour and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this part of the Delta, the landscape, the people, music and creativity spawned from this part of the deep south. read more

Clarksdale is an amazing and authentic experience but like most travel it requires context to truly appreciate it. You can try and read up on your own but there's no way you'll come close to what you will learn with Chilly Billy. My wife and I spent 3 1/2 hours with Chilly Billy. Communication prior to meeting was outstanding. He arrived on time in a clean late model jeep. He asked us enough questions to help tailor our tour then off we went. The tour included natural features of the area, visits with local musicians and artisans, the levee system and of course the local musicians scene . Great tour! We took the 2 hour tour. Chilli billy picked us up at our door in his shine clean Jeep. Which was really great because I though it would be more of a tour bus. He grew up here and has lots of back stories of the musicians, homes, buildings, and history I do trimmed the tour. My only recommendation would be to wear a mask. There are two things you must do in Clarksdale: Visit the Delta Blues Museum and take the Delta Bohemian Tour. Do *not* miss this tour. It's not just a blues tour, although you will stop at the *correct* intersection where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul. It's a Delta region tour conducted by Chilly Billy Howell, a Clarksdale native who seems to know everything and everyone (including Whistle). Y'all must visit Clarksdale MS! Who'da thought such an awesome place existed in this small town in the Mississippi delta. My husband is an avid blues music fanatic. Robert Plant's album. 'Walking into Clarksdale" sparked his interest to visit the small town out seemingly in the middle of nowhere. However, much to our surprise, we found Billy's tour and WOW what a treasure to behold. We never imagined what we would learn in the three hours we spent with Billy. We spent one on one personal, down home time with Billy who not only shared the local historical landmarks, surrounding delta agriculture history and points of interest, but shared the heart of the town and its people. Whether you are a lover of blues, old architecture, Tennessee Williams or like me, love to learn the rich history of the south and what stories it has to tell, you will love this tour. I would say that after we finished, we have become enamored with the town, the people and the heart of Clarksdale. We only spent two days this time and now that we know about this gem or diamond in the rough, we will return to experience the festivals and become part of this fabulous place. We made sure to visit as many places Billy told us about in town while we were here. My favorite place was The Shack Up Inn. Love LOVE loved the feel of it. Earthy and artsy fartsy. Shabby sheikh southern style. My cup of tea. :) Both my husband and I especially loved the Delta Blues Museum, Ground Zero, Red's Blues Club (there are no words to describe-you must experience) and Cat Head was AWESOME to say the least. Hands down, our 2 hour tour with Billy was the highlight of our road trip from Memphis to New Orleans. Had we known how amazing and fun it was going to be we would have booked the longest tour he offered. Billy is an encyclopedia of knowledge about this region and makes it come alive. For those who don't know much about this area and Clarksdale in particular, his tour opens it up like a blooming flower and we regret we did not stay in Clarksdale at least another day. I give this tour my highest recommendation!!! The Delta Bohemian tour with Billy Howell was by far the highlight of our wonderful trip to Clarksdale, MS. My wife and I were traveling from Texas to Alabama to see our nephew graduate from college. We decided that we would break up the trip and stay in Clarsksdale, MS in order to hear some authentic live blues music. Clarksdale, MS is the birth place of the blues and the music scene was simply amazing and truly did live up to the hype. On a whim, we decided to book a tour with the Delta Bohemian Tours in order to get more (local color) or flavor of the Mississippi Delta region. I am so glad we did; because it was truly the high point of the entire trip. Chilly Billy (the owner and tour director) is very knowledgeable, entertaining, fun, and quite a character in his own right. He has a natural gift for storytelling and he really knows how to bring the regional identity of the delta to life! Billy has a saying "You will come to Clarksdale for the blues; but you will come back for the people" and we found that to be absolutely true. My wife and I came to Clarksdale for the music but we will be back for the friends we made. We booked a tour but received so much more. We received an unforgettable experience that we will never forget. If you are planning a trip to the MS delta; then do yourself a favor and book a tour with Billy. We are from Oakland, CA with the thought of relocating to Clarksdale, MS for our retirement. We purposefully booked this tour with Chilly Billy as we KNEW he'd be about the best ambassador Clarksdale has to offer. WE WERE NOT WRONG!!! As a matter of fact, Billy is a perfect ambassador for the entire state of Mississippi. You will never meet a more friendly, caring and sweet human being than Chilly Billy. Trust me when we tell you this. We were shown the in and outs of Clarksdale, we were taught so much of our own history we came away from the tour enlightened and hungry for more.
