Deluca's is a fantastic, corner grocery store! They have what you need, and they're on the corner. What the heck do people want? They've got good stuff: stonybrook farms organic milk, organic and regular eggs, bananas, wine downstairs, Rao's pasta sauce (and many others), imported and regular pasta, chicken and other items in the meat department, tea, dried cranberries, fresh produce, fresh bread. And they have some of my favorite petit écolier cookies! They have a mini selection of everything you need in a tiny shop on Newbury! Do they have everything? No. It's a tiny shop on the corner. It's not a replacement for the giant Star Market. But Delucas has coverage of key items, thoughtful brand/item choices, and keep things fresh. (Maybe the low reviews are from people that want a football sized store instead of a tiny corner store?) Delucas is one of the best corner stores I've been to. If you live in the area, it's fantastically useful. And the staff I've found quite helpful. read more

This is the closest thing to a bodega that Boston will ever see. Deluca's has a ton of yuppy products that make my belly tingle with excitement. They have an outstanding dried pasta & canned sauce (if you're into that sort of thing) selection, chocolate from other countries, and of course, milk. If you're looking to get a little mid-day buzz on, go to the basement and choose from an expansive selection of alcohol. The people that work there are great if you're a regular like me, but if you're the type of person who buys crab meat or wants a fully operating point of sale system, you should probably go somewhere else. read more

The groceries are totally overpriced, but that's obviously because it's located on Newbury Street like wtf do you guys expect?? I spend a TON of time in the Back Bay, and it's really convenient to have it. They know this, so they overcharge you for stuff. Duh. I'm not even that mad about it because you would do the same if you owned a small storefront on Newbury... If you really can't fork up the extra couple bucks, walk a few blocks over to Star Market. It's small, the aisles are narrow and some of the shelves are tall enough that I can't reach everything so it is hard to browse. And I'm not sure how things are organized so I have to look around for everything. So shopping can be an adventure. But every time I go in I see all sorts of things I suddenly need that I didn't know I needed. There are a bunch of little things, like candy or tea, which I haven't seen anywhere else. They have a deli counter and at $7.50 for a sandwich it is well worth the price. Some of the other things are slightly expensive. The man who helped me at the deli counter was good about letting me know what my options were for the sandwich and was helpful. The register is old and I have been in several times when it wasn't working right or they couldn't take credit cards. And I have had to ask more than once what my total was because the person working the register would ring me up and just wait for the money without saying anything. I wouldn't go grocery shopping here but I will be back for sandwiches and hard to find items or specialty candy and things like that. read more

Right after the blizzard, having been cooped up indoors all day yesterday, and the streets lined with about 20 inches of snow, I slip and slide down the street to Deluca's to get a pack of cigarettes. They're overpriced at this establishment, but I've been going to the place for over 2 years now simply because of its close proximity. The girl at the cashier, who has sold me cigarettes numerous times before over the course of 2 years, asks for my ID. I'm surprised, because she doesn't ask for my ID other times, and being a regular customer I usually just run down the street without my wallet, birth certificate, passport, college diploma, etc. I tell her I don't have it on me, and that she's sold me cigarettes before. She snaps, "I can't remember everyone's faces," and then looks at me smugly. There's being professional and following store policy, and there's being difficult. She was being the latter. I consider informing her that I'm 28, but realize she's not going to budge unless I produce my birth certificate to back that up. I rattle off the name of employees at the store who have come to know me and sell me cigarettes on a weekly basis as well, but she realizes by then that it's too late for her to be reasonable because everyone in line is listening and watching. Obviously, I have to be the one in the wrong. This is also the moment where Virgil, the owner, asks me to leave because I'm getting in the way of other customers in line. I was in the midst of paying for another item. Even as I'm signing the receipt he comes over to me and repeats, "You need an ID," like I'm stupid, so he can make me leave faster. Frustrated at this treatment (which I've gotten before at DeLuca's), I tell him it's fine, don't worry about it and leave. I slip and slide a couple blocks down to the ever dependable 7 Eleven, where the guys sell me cigarettes without hesitation and with a nod, because they remember me, as most observant employees do. Two things have come out of this incident : 1. I should probably carry ID with me at all times, even if it's to go into a store a few doors down where everyone knows me, just in case one of them gets a sudden case of amnesia. 2. That's the end of my 2+ years of giving money to the overpriced DeLuca's on Newbury, where a regular is treated like a liar by a below average employee. I'll walk those extra three blocks down to 7E or Shaws any day from here on forth. read more

I was psyched to have a cute little market right down the block from me but I slowly realized that this place is a dump! Just by looking at it you can see that they don't care about cleanliness; the windows are dripping with scum, the outdoor tables are falling apart, the handmade signs take over the windowfront and I'm just getting started! One early Sunday morning I strolled in to find that one of the bottom shelves had been cleared out and they were obviously trying to track down a mouse or lay down traps, they also have wire mesh outside the main entrance, obviously to keep out mice that have chewed through the molding... GET IT REPLACED! Take a look at the dairy section when you have a chance, most of the selection is nearing the sell-by date! Have you ever looked at the ceiling in this place? I actually feel badly for the people that work their because they probably have mold in their lungs. One of the redeeming qualities of this place is the sandwich selection... they are pretty tasty and they use fresh bread but judging by the cleanliness of the overall store, I wouldn't trust them. In conclusion I think this place needs a major overhaul. Close up shop for 6 months and redo the place. Take a look at Citarella's in NYC and get a better idea of what a gourmet market is supposed to be. read more

It's too bad I can't give this place a lower rating, because it doesn't deserve a single point. Deluca's markup is insane!! Everything here is overpriced. A box of clementines for $9.99, which you can find at Shaws for half that price (and Shaws isn't cheap either). $3.99 for a dozen grade A eggs (not organic) is completely unreasonable, when you can find that at Trader's for half. Deluca's prides itself on it's selection of meat and cheese, which is easily dwarfed by other grocery stores. I can't seem to find any redeeming qualities of this place, other than the fact the location is convenient for me. Deluca's seems to think because it's situated in Back Bay it reserves the right to charge outrageous prices, even when Shaws and Trader Joe's are a block away. read more

Good for cheese and snacks but the deli is just pathetic. These used to be some of the best sandwiches in the city and now they are just sort of sad, the line used to stretch out the front door and now I rarely see anyone in there! They put the smallest amount of ingredients they can get away with on your sandwich, one leaf of lettuce, two or three pickle slices, and don't even get me started on the cheese, it's sliced SO thin you can barely taste it. This place is more than just a newbury style convenience store. I haven't tried the sandwiches yet but I usually pop in here everytime I'm in the neighborhood. As for the deli, the $6.99 Italian deli sandwich (which I paired with a DeLuca's Diet Root Beer) was good, but not great (and a bit "dainty" in terms of the meat quantity). The folks making the sandwich didn't fit the store very well (not Italian?) and didn't speak English. I don't mind this, but they also chatted and laughed in another language, and I wasn't sure if they were laughing at me or not, which is never fun. The staff actually went out of their way with today's interaction. Too bad they went out of their way to make us feel uncomfortable. It was mid morning and we had two coffees outside. The curmudgeonly old man inside decided we weren't drinking our coffee fast enough and told us to move on. There were plenty of other seats available and no one waiting. Worst grocery shop! I have lived in Back Bay for five years and only stop in when I'm in a huge rush and need something. I was heading off to a weekend away and needed a yogurt, some fruit, and granola bars. I should have just gone hungry! The cashier's response to my question of "Where do you keep the granola bars?" was "I don't know" with a blank stare. Okkkkk. All of the fruit looked past due and after digging around for five minutes I found two nectarines that seemed decent. The staff were very rude. It seems like an unpleasant place to work, so I can understand (plus, who hasn't had a job they hated?) but it's no excuse. I never come here to buy any groceries. But I do stop in at the deli counter (way in the back) for a sandwich every now and then. They carry the Boars Head brand of deli meats so the quality is pretty good. They also have a nice selection of breads for the sandwiches. Their meatballs are homemade, but on occasion they've had to reheat the meatballs in the microwave. So double check before you decide. read more

I used to really like Deluca's. It's a quaint little grocery shop with a cool little wine cellar that has a good selection of wines as well as some more unique beers. However, there are two bad things about it. It's pretty over priced, which I guess is expected for a small place like this, and it stops selling alcohol at 9 FREAKIN PM. 9? come on. This place is a small market that was doing average business when I arrived. I got the Delucas Famous Roast Beef and Provolone and I was pleasantly surprised. It is not the best sandwhich in Boston, but I think it is the best one in the Back Bay. The lettuce and tomato were fresh, the roast beef was rare, and the provlone was absolutely delicious. The price is a little high at 7 dollars, but that is pretty reasonable given the area. I think I have found my new sandwhich shop in the Back Bay. read more

I was SO pleasantly surprised when I came in here! Most food on Newbury St is either a sit down restaurant, a cupcake store, or a smoothie place for reasons unbeknownst to me. I was getting hungry walking around and decided to pop in and see if they had any snacks. They had way more than that! The deli in the back has tons of prepared food at a really great price--my oriental noodles was $3.50 for a half pound and was totally filling for my lunch craving. They also had lots of great sandwich offerings made to order. But my favorite part about this place is their specialty beverages wall. I was in Scotland this summer and became obsessed with Belvoir Elderflower Pressè (it's like a lightly flower flavored sparkling juice and it is DELICIOUS). I hadn't seen it ANYWHERE since we got back, and I even ordered some on Amazon because I was so desperate to have it again. Imagine my excitement to see the Rose Elderflower and Elderflower varieties on their shelves, in both the 750 mL bottle and the 8 oz. I bought 3 and I will fasho be back. The price wasn't bad either. They also had tons of flavored tonic waters like lavender and others. Too cool Try this market for a tasty snack if you're not feeling like an expensive meal at a restaurant! Received: Very tastey Chicken Salad, on slightly too old and too small Sourdough, with American and tomatoe. It might be nice to get a sandwhich and eat outside, but the place seems pricey. I only shop at Deluca's for groceries out of shear desperation--if the weather is terrible or if I forgot to buy an ingredient for dinner. Pay attention to expiration dates when shopping here!! In my experience, most of the groceries in the store are already half-way spoiled when you buy them. Ever buy cream cheese at a regular grocery store? Well, it generally has a three week or longer expiration date. Not at Deluca's. I was totally annoyed when I bought some cream cheese there and discovered that it expired in 5 days. Seriously, it must have been sitting there for a month already. I also avoid buying any bread or rolls from them. They generally go bad and turn green within three days of buying them. I would never eat their deli meat or buy poultry from them. Just seems way too risky for me! What adds insult to injury is the outrageous mark up they charge. I understand that Newbury street is expensive, but their prices are totally out of control. The only redeeming quality about this place is the wine selection downstairs and the fact that they sell random hard to find foodie items (like escargot) which your regular grocery store may not have. I work in the Prudential Center and needed a different place to go to get lunch one day. A friend told me about Deluca's and ever since I've been going here at least once a week. When I first started going here, the sandwiches were very good, meaty and a good alternative to what's in the neighborhood including the mall across the street. This place has gone WAY down hill. Here's the feeble pastrami and swiss I ended up with today all for the low, low price of $6.99: three slices of pastrami, one slice of swiss. So much for 'overstuffed sandwiches' as billed. Deluca's is a great place to find specialty food items along Newbury Street. The only issue: It's on Newbury street. Not only does this mean that it has a tendency to be a bit overpriced, but you have to battle shopping traffic and car traffic to do it. The selection an be limited, and although there are some standout items here that you can't always find at your usual Shaws or neighborhood convenience store, it's almost not worth the struggle of trying to navigate this tiny, cramped space and dealing with window shoppers stopping in between their bouts of shopping. I'll stop into Deluca's if I'm in a pinch, but I'll definitely opt for other options if I can. read more
