Deming, New Mexixo Timestamp: April 2021 Location & Parking: SW Corner off of Silver & Hemlock in DT Deming. There is no designated lot but street parking is plenty unless there is an event. Handicap: The museum is extensive, big, and multiple floors. Handicap friendly with ramps, elevators and rails to allow some balancing. Hours: Generally M-Sat 9-3. Costs: Free Museum Type: Historical, local, regional. Collection at time of visit: Mixture of Pioneers, early settlers, military, Regional Native American sprinkled with some Northern Mexican, and a plethora of community/local affairs. Things to do at museum: This large museums have roughly 40 exhibits w/ various themes from natives, WW2, a basketball gym and so forth. Things to do nearby the museum: Veteran's park outside of the armory building and across the street is the Customs House & archives. Overall, the museum is extensive. The pottery collection is well done with variances. Quite extensive compared to other local museums. The medical room is from past generations and how the local dealt with health issues is pretty neat along with the small car show including an amazing carriage hearst. Make shift mini-town is constructed in the halls and the top floor is a basketball court filled with local affairs. Great place to learn about Luna County and how people co-existed and survived in this beautiful yet at times hostile region (think Pancho Villa). Travel safely www.cleeshyun.com @cigarcpa @cleeshyun

Get off that interstate and step inside. You'll be glad you did and will hate to leave!

Stop in Deming for a museum??? You will not be sorry! Driving cross country with our 7 year old granddaughter and decided to just pop on for 30 minutes tops for a leg stretcher. An hour later we forced ourselves to get back on the road and promised to return. Fabulous doll collection from around the world and throughout the ages. But don't spend too much time there because there's much more... antique telephone display, 50s doctors office including iron lungs, fabulous aroma of antique instruments dating back to who knows when and don't miss the mirror that saw the Pancho Villa raid. This stop is entertaining and great little gift shop.

Got there right as they were closing so I didn't get the opportunity to check out the inside just got to see the displays outdoors. Trying to capture a little sight seeing and a bit of history while on my road trips. I'd like to go back and see inside.

What a great place for oldie like me. They have collections ranging from dolls to coaches. It is literally on the way to Las Cruces and White Sand park.

The museum itself and its collections are probably much bigger and more interesting than most people expect - so allow yourself sufficient time to enjoy it. The museum has many sections, each focusing on something different. Their pottery collection is the second largest in the country (with the Smithsonian being the only other place with more in one spot). I was not interested in all of their exhibits but found a few that made the visit well worth the time coming especially because there is no cost to look around.

I was blown away by how much this museum has to offer. This place is packed to the brim with wide-ranging types of artifacts and exhibits. You would never guess from the outside how much stuff is in this place. You can tell that there is so much time, thought, effort, and dedication put into maintaining this museum. We were on vacation and traveling between Las Cruces and Tucson and had expected to spend about an hour or so here. We ended up being here for more than three. I loved the beautiful Bessie May room, the Mimbres pottery room, the gem and mineral collection, the Old Main Street section which recreated old storefronts of different types of businesses, and the Deming sports exhibit. When the volunteers asked me how I enjoyed my visit, I told them that this is probably one of the best museums of any sort that I have ever been to. The volunteers were knowledgeable about everything in the museum and seemed to truly enjoy helping the visitors.

Didn't expect a good museum in Deming NM. So much to see and it is free. The people at the museum is very friendly and helpful. Please donate and help. Street parking is easy and plenty

When you walk in everyone is super friendly. My two year old had a blast sitting on the red fire truck and ringing the bell.

Costs: Free Museum Type: Historical Custom House Seaman Field's old home is believed to be this small New Mexico town of Deming's inital customs house. This is speculated to be the original custom house for Deming or the entire Luna County because Mr. Seamen Field set up his home/ranch back in 1848. Mr. Field was also the first bonded customs agent under President G. Cleveland, Deming's first mayor and judge. More info about Mr Field, this abode and related can be found at the Luna County (Columbus) Historical Society (Museum) in Columbus, New Mexico about an hour south of Deming near the Original Mexico border. The home has been refurbished inside and out to resemble the late 1800 and early 1900s rather than it's pure original. The home is in well shape throughout the years and looks nothing like the original abode since we don't know what it really looked like yet still a gem to snoop around the past, learn and be amazed how the people back thing survived. Deming is a small town with limitations. Notable attractions in Deming are the Mimbres Museum across the street, the small Veterans park/memorial across the street and the Luna County Courthouse which is over 100 years old with a cool park to rest up. About one hour north of Deming are: City of Rocks, and Fort Cummings Historical Site and town of Hatch. A further drive is Silver City which has its own set of touristy stuff. About one hour south of Deming are: The mexican border, Luna County Historical Society and the Pancho Villa State Park. About one east is Las Cruces, NM and there is nothing west until you hit Benson, Arizona. Travel safely www.cleeshyun.com @cigarcpa @cleeshyun

If the amount of money and energy being spent on PR or being spent by the town residents and businesses to create a cohesive and healthy community with a goal this town could be a nice place to visit. We tried several of the trails which were not as advertised. Apparently the trails heads were initiated in the late seventies. Unfortunately upkeep of the trails and environment has not occurred. It appears that large collective of failed artists and '70s like businesses have taken over much of town. There are quite a few antique shops that have an amazing amount of antique odds and ends if you're looking. This is a Bible belt area. Businesses are not open on Sunday. The town has a smattering of mom and pop cafes and bistros serving generic quality Fare. The prices are significantly high for the quality of food. Coffee shop prices are reasonable. Everything about this town advertises that it is struggling and failing. From brightly colored paints coating multiple old and chipping paints and rotting wood. The town does have ramps to their very high sidewalks. What must the same from the height of the sidewalks that water gets down the streets when rain is significant. The highest rated restaurants in town are fast food corporate chains. There is a very large Walmart a tractor supply hardware store and drug stores. There is an Albertsons. Gas prices are a dollar higher than on the main freeways. Restaurant food prices are expensive given the quality of food. The people here were very nice. However conversation generally of people not being able to afford maintenance on homes telling us that economically the area is really struggling. This is not a bad place to stop if you are trying to travel up the Gila national Forest. Otherwise recommend stopping at the bigger towns 30 to 40 minutes away and bypassing this experience.
