While traveling from Southern California to visit my son in Texas I came across this fantastic eclectic small-town museum in Deming, NM. They have a mixed bag of unique historical items that were all donated by locals and run by very pleasant volunteers. The admission is a donation of your choosing. Deming, New Mexixo Timestamp: April 2021 Location & Parking: SW Corner off of Silver & Hemlock in DT Deming. There is no designated lot but street parking is plenty unless there is an event. Handicap: The museum is extensive, big, and multiple floors. Handicap friendly with ramps, elevators and rails to allow some balancing. Hours: Generally M-Sat 9-3. Costs: Free Museum Type: Historical, local, regional. Collection at time of visit: Mixture of Pioneers, early settlers, military, Regional Native American sprinkled with some Northern Mexican, and a plethora of community/local affairs. Things to do at museum: This large museums have roughly 40 exhibits w/ various themes from natives, WW2, a basketball gym and so forth. Things to do nearby the museum: Veteran's park outside of the armory building and across the street is the Customs House & archives. Overall, the museum is extensive. The pottery collection is well done with variances. Quite extensive compared to other local museums. The medical room is from past generations and how the local dealt with health issues is pretty neat along with the small car show including an amazing carriage hearst. Make shift mini-town is constructed in the halls and the top floor is a basketball court filled with local affairs. Great place to learn about Luna County and how people co-existed and survived in this beautiful yet at times hostile region (think Pancho Villa). Stop in Deming for a museum??? You will not be sorry! Driving cross country with our 7 year old granddaughter and decided to just pop on for 30 minutes tops for a leg stretcher. An hour later we forced ourselves to get back on the road and promised to return. Fabulous doll collection from around the world and throughout the ages. But don't spend too much time there because there's much more... antique telephone display, 50s doctors office including iron lungs, fabulous aroma of antique instruments dating back to who knows when and don't miss the mirror that saw the Pancho Villa raid. Great museum! We dropped in after lunch at Irma's. We were welcomed in and so surprised at the size of the place. Lots of artifacts and pottery from the Mimbres Indians, vintage toy collection, historic Armed Services items, and an assortment of other items. We could only stay for 30 minutes but there is enough to see for an entire day. Hope to go back. read more

The museum itself and its collections are probably much bigger and more interesting than most people expect - so allow yourself sufficient time to enjoy it. The museum has many sections, each focusing on something different. Their pottery collection is the second largest in the country (with the Smithsonian being the only other place with more in one spot). I was not interested in all of their exhibits but found a few that made the visit well worth the time coming especially because there is no cost to look around. read more

I truly love visiting this place as a person who appreciates history this is a walk back into the history of the trials and tribulations associated with living in what is some of the most inhospitable land in the United States of America. I see in my minds eye people from all walks of life sojourning to a new land filled with potential. "There is gold in them there hill's" I can do a museum review without getting that one in;) The Deming museum is to the still small child that resides in each of us a journey filled with intrigue and possibilities. The minister in me reminds me of the collective sacrifice people endured that we might have these rights that all might be created equal. A little hidden gem in a small town of Deming. The town is very sad looking but this museum rocks!! First, you see an awesome tank in front of the building. Then the place inside goes on and on. So much stuff to see. You definitely need at least an hour to walk through it. Free admission and donation is highly recommended. Please keep this place open, you can judge it yourself when you swing by there. Staff is very friendly and kids can learn so much from this place. read more

A must experience when visiting Deming Could take a couple days to see all the wealth of information and exhibits. We were just amazed at the depth and breadth of this museum. Fantastic Indigenous artifacts, photographs, depictions of earlier times. One of the best! I highly recommend it. Staff is very helpful and friendly which certainly sets the tone for any public operation. There was so much to see that we didn't even get to the second floor. Will definitely come back again. When you walk in everyone is super friendly. My two year old had a blast sitting on the red fire truck and ringing the bell.

I was blown away by how much this museum has to offer. This place is packed to the brim with wide-ranging types of artifacts and exhibits. You would never guess from the outside how much stuff is in this place. You can tell that there is so much time, thought, effort, and dedication put into maintaining this museum. We were on vacation and traveling between Las Cruces and Tucson and had expected to spend about an hour or so here. We ended up being here for more than three. I loved the beautiful Bessie May room, the Mimbres pottery room, the gem and mineral collection, the Old Main Street section which recreated old storefronts of different types of businesses, and the Deming sports exhibit. When the volunteers asked me how I enjoyed my visit, I told them that this is probably one of the best museums of any sort that I have ever been to. The volunteers were knowledgeable about everything in the museum and seemed to truly enjoy helping the visitors. read more

If you are passing through Deming and need a little break, this museum is great. Located downtown with plentiful parking; very easy to access. The exhibits range from local minerals to an entire room dedicated to dolls/toys. Ironic that such a small town would have such a massive building dedicated to it's history. This is a museum worthy of your time. I stop whenever I am in Deming, and on my most recent visit, I admit, was overwhelmed by some of the history in this museum. From notes and articles about the Bataan Death March, to a collection of liquor bottles that numbers probably over a thousand. The Geode collection is extensive. The history of shops and the equipment from long ago is incredible. Wait till you see the old hair salon! The sets of photos of all the locals and their generations is wonderful. This time I found a photographic collection of The Faces of Deming, that was inspiring indeed! There is so much going on, yet it is large and spacious. The upstairs is due to be back online in Nov 2012, and that brings another layer to this museum! Top it off it is free. (you can donate all you want) The volunteers that put this together have a passion that needs to be bottled and sprayed on people everywhere! What a gem. read more

Very nicely done museum. No dusty or musty here. Don't drive by but stop in. They have a potpourri of interesting items - great WWII - pottery - toys - and so much more. You can see that the staff and volunteers take pride in the museum. When we visited it was nicely decorated for the holidays. It's free but help support it by putting something in the donation box. We spent a few hours here but will be back to explore further. There's a small gift shop too. read more

My better half and I wanted a daytrip by motorcar, and the initial plan was to hike in the Spring Canyon-Rockhound State Park area. To obtain more information, we needed to stop at the valuable visitor's center first. There, the woman in charge, Brandy, gave us a plethora of information but urged us to visit this dynamic museum first to get a more well-rounded understanding of the area. It was easy to find--the classical structure is a former armory & home of the New Mexico National Guard. Following the posted directions, we entered this building from an easy ramp down, through the door into a brightly lit space. Immediately, we were greeted by the caretakers who gave us a map and ushered us on into the displays, saying "Everything here has been donated." What an amazing array of donated history, made even more impressive with how it had been arranged--not a bit of space was wasted, even items hanging from the ceiling. Yet it was not chaotic or did anything seem out of place--very impressive. I was particularly interested in the military room, specifically with the Norden Bombsight, which was noted in "Unbroken". Another area of great interest was the lace & quilt room on the second floor (take and elevator or steps with good handrails), where the word "TAT" has an exact meaning related to the intricate patterns formed in delicate lacework. I work with numerous high school students about where they see their future, and a some of them are quite interested in working "tat" or "tattoo". Now I'll be able to give them a bit of a connection, that "tat" also describes very precise clothwork, which looks like skin tats. Anyway, this museum is FANTASTIC and free; run by volunteers and donations. We both made deposits in the box. Adjacent to the building is the Veterans' Park, especially for the Bataan Death marchers who came out of Luna County; these, along with other military members are remembered and honored. I was impressed with one of the armaments on display is a "touch" unit, and saw a pair of children sitting in the bombing seat of a howitzer. Ironic that in war/combat, it is an instrument of death; but here in a small space of honor, it is an instrument of joy, delight, & distraction. I loved it. I loved Deming's museum! A real step back in time due to the large collection of items, memorabilia and photos from times past. The museum also featured a large collection of Mimbres pottery, and every kind of gem and mineral you can imagine! We spent a few hours downstairs, then had a delicious lunch at a restaurant down the street, and came back and spent an hour upstairs. The ladies who work (volunteer?) at the museum are extremely friendly and helpful. There is no charge for admission but donations are appreciated. They also have a nice gift shop with a good selection of books about the Mimbres tribe of Indians and other topics of interest. read more

Every good reviews you read are true. Probably the best small town museum we have ever seen. Go early, since it can take 2-3 hours to see what you want. I don't know how such a quality museum can function on a donation policy. There is also concern that the volunteer help might become too few in the future. Some tourists just passing through have been impressed enough to donate quality items themselves. read more

We just went to the museum yesterday and it was great. The volunteers are friendly and helpful. I've been to this museum probably 10 times in my life and it's always really neat to see the collection of mimbres pottery and other various artifacts. Plan for enough time as you can easily spend two plus hours in here if you really want to look at everything and read some of the included materials. read more
