It's somewhat embarrassing, but ever since I had a couple of very bad experiences with dentists and dental work, I've been afraid of going to the dentist. So, I was so happy the first time I went to see Dr. Chan because of a cavity but he was so gentle with the freezing injection, that I didn't even feel it. That was a first for me. Since then, he always has the best way of relating to his patients with respect, kindness, understanding and positivity. He knows I have a difficult time with dental work and through every procedure, he lets me know what he is going to do. Sort of like a play-by-play through the whole procedure. So, when all is said and done with any procedure I've had with him, I come away feeling very grateful and appreciative of Dr. Chan's lovely approach to dentistry and his patients because he has always put me at ease and more relaxed than I've ever been when having dental work done.

When I had booked my and my husbands first appointments I asked if they would provide an ESTIMATE of the out of pocket cost (after insurance coverage) and she said yes. On the day of the appointment she ridiculed me in front of her colleague (the younger receptionist you see in the photo's) and another client waiting in the waiting room. Saying "I can't tell you what you will pay, don't you know anything about your own insurance?" I explained she told me over the phone that they could provide an estimate - she knew it was her. The hygienist - Angie/Anita (or something close to that) was absolutely wonderful. She calmed my nerves and listened to my concerns and was very gentle during the cleaning. I found Dr. Norman Wong to be the opposite. He didn't listen to my concerns and was only interested in covering up his poor chair-side manner with stupid jokes. I asked him what we could do about the discoloration on the front right tooth (I had a filling in that tooth many years ago and it was becoming dark). He said all he could do was polish the tooth but that was all. I thought that was a bit strange, but since he said that was my only option I agreed to do it.I also had a chip on the front left tooth and was told the only thing we could do was to fill the bottom in and I agreed to that, made an appointment to get both done. He didn't go into much detail about either option. All he did was literally buff the surface of the tooth that was turning brown - the tooth was now shiny, but still discolored. I was pretty mad at myself for allowing this guy to talk me into such a stupid "solution" and paying for that! The filling chipped/ broke off within 10 days. 6 months or so later I had the next cleaning, I had the same hygienist. She asked me about the issues we'd discussed the first time and I told her that I was not happy about the options and service provided by Dr. Wong. She told me that he could re-do the filling so the dark filling would be removed and re-filled, resulting in a white (tooth like) appearance again. I wasn't happy that Dr. Wong did not give me this option the first time. When Dr. Wong came in to follow up as they always do, I asked what we could do about the discoloration and mentioned that the previous time he stated that polishing was the only thing to do. He seemed very annoyed at my asking and being unhappy with the polishing. He said well the only thing that can be done is to re-do the filling - with a very short, irritated attitude. To which I stated well then let's do it - in kind. For the rest of the consultation he spoke to the hygienist, didn't ask if I have any questions (which I did have) and just walked out without even greeting me... Angie/Anita walked me out and handed a sticky note to the male female receptionist, who was busy and didn't notice. I went to the male receptionist who printed our invoices and settled the bill. I told him I have to make an appointment and the other receptionist had the sticky note, but I would need to check my schedule and get back to them. He was professional and kind. I told my husband what happened and he insisted we go back and see if the Dr. could discuss other options (even if we had to wait for a while) like braces, to straighten my teeth because we think problem is that the discolored tooth was skew and positioned in such a way that made discoloration inevitable even if we re-filled the tooth. When we got there I asked the receptionist if she could refer us to an orthodontist, she was alone in front now. She said Dr. Wong is an orthodontist and he would be happy to discuss all my options at my next visit. She implied that I was rude to have left without booking the appointment as discussed with the Dr. I told her I had spoken to her colleague and that I needed to get back to them. We asked to see the Dr. as it would impact the appointment, we'd gladly wait. She said I should've asked all my questions during my appointment, I would need to book another appointment. I told her the Dr. walked out without giving me the opportunity to ask further questions. She said that I had clearly agreed upon a treatment so if I wanted to speak to him I could make an appointment for another day. My husband said we just wanted to make sure what all the options were and explained why we thought there could be more options. I showed her the tooth in question and she started arguing that I had discussed the wrong tooth with the Dr. as the sticky note was for a different tooth and raised her voice at me. I calmly told her there can't be a re-filling on a tooth that doesn't have a filling. Alas, we were were turned away and left without seeing the Dr. I've cancelled my next cleaning - still hurt and disappointed.

From the moment you check in, the staff are extremely friendly, kind and personable while being professional. The hygienist I saw was Natasha and not only was she super sweet and kind, she was full of helpful suggestions such as how to floss properly (she demonstrated it while I held a mirror so I could see). The dentist I saw is Dr. Shivji (junior). You can tell that he is confident in what he does and has great knowledge. Not only is her super personable but he is honest- he will not recommend getting things done that you don't really need just to make more money for the business (as I have experienced at other dental offices in the past). I get anxious about feeling anything when getting fillings and he was very gentle and reassuring, always checking to make sure I was doing ok. I trust him to give me good dental advice. Again, I cannot say enough good things about everyone working at Alpha Dental and my only regret is not being a patient here sooner.

This was the worst dentist office I have ever visited. I came in for a cleaning this morning…read more(routine). Instead, of a cleaning, they processed me for 5m, took some x-rays and proceeded to clean half my teeth (the bottom half) before sending me on my way... They also lied and told me I needed two fillings due to a cavity and a groove in my tooth. When I got a second opinion (from my old family dentist), none of these things were found. When I inquired as to if this was normal. I was told that due to my being 15m late, I would have to schedule another appointment (since apparently cleanings take about 1.5hr at this place). My thoughts: I was late so I accept that it will cut into my appointment. However.. 1.5hr is not a reasonable expectation for a routine cleaning. I've seen 3 different dentists in the last 5 years (due to my being a traveling consultant), and the longest session I've had was 45m in San Francisco. If cleanings are 1.5hr regularly for new patients. Why was I not informed of this. All they did in the session today was scrape my bottom teeth (no fluoride or anything else). edit: they also lied and said that I needed two fillings due to a cavity and an apparent groove in one of my teeth. Obviously I went for a second opinion to my family's dentist. To my (not) surprise, my family's dentist said there was no cavity. He also showed me the x-rays that he had taken of me from last June and compared it to the ones which Brentwood Dental Group forwarded. The difference was like night and day. The x-rays from Brentwood Dental group were grainy and you 'could' argue that there was a cavity there (there was a shadow in a very murky and grey picture). My family dentist's x-rays were crisp and clear (the contrast between white and black was very crisp). He then showed me the areas which I had been told had a cavity and told me that in his opinion, it was fine. There was no pain and there wouldn't have been that much degradation since last June. There was no need to unnecessarily drill my teeth unless I really wanted to. I would highly recommend everyone to avoid this dentist group as they run the place like an apple store. Hiding under the guise of expertise to upsell you bullshit you don't need.

He did a very in-depth physical examination with a ton of documented notes (mostly high tech Ortho speak). Then a series of photographs of the teeth and then digital x-ray series. The office decor is very cool with a upmarket studio feel. The staff are very customer service centered, polite and professional. They even have great WIFI and tablets to while away the time if needed. The explanation for the braces, to correct my daughter's teeth, was thorough and not full of technical jargon. The kicker was when we got to the finances. I was pleasantly surprised at the cost for a 20 month program. I would highly recommend that you call and make an appointment soon if you have need of a great Orthodontist who is detail oriented.

Dr. Mah was close by and so was First Impression. Didn't end up booking with Dr. Mah as they charge for a consult whereas First Impression is free! Yah.... I'm cheap (or should I say wise with my money)! But really, waive the $75, spend an hour of your time and show people your work and you are highly likely to land a $6-8k client! Booked an appointment with First Impression. When you walk into the office you are impressed at how new, clean and bright it is! The office is also lined by gorgeous photos...all taken by Dr. Luu himself! The kids are impressed there is an electronics area with various electronic devices. There is free wifi, a station for coffee and hot chocolate. I even laughed as they recently added a card stand with lots of different handmade cards (all really nice and professional looking may I add) all made by Dr. Luu's wife. It's a one stop shop! Anyhow, back to the review.... The staff are all super nice, friendly, knowledgable and service oriented. I'd have to rate it in the top 5% for service I have ever encountered, it's just that good! Our paediatric dentist's practice is partnered with an orthodontic arm so she doesn't necessarily deal with a lot of outside orthodontists. But she has mentioned to me that she is really impressed by Dr. Luu as he has sent her a few detailed letters (copy was sent to me too) telling her that it would be a good idea to bring my daughter in for a cleaning because her oral hygiene was not up to standards. The first times was maybe 4-5 months into the treatment and another time was a few months after that. After the second letter I showed my daughter the letter and told her she needed to step it up!!!! Glad to report she finally got that she needed to do a better job! I love that they switched over to an electronic appointment reminder so I get an email a week before my daughter's appointment. You confirm on the email that you can make the appointment. if you can't you just email them or call them to change. It's very efficient! It's easy to get/change an appointment since they are open wed-sat for the most part (sometimes the days change as he has an office in Whitehorse that he visits a few times a month). If I have to add a con to my review because not everything can be 100% perfect. I have had my daughter tell me she needed more elastics or a wire was bugging her AFTER the office closes on Sat, so you do have to wait until Wed which can be inconvenient, but nothing to move it below a 5 star review as hey, medical professionals need some family time too! Oh and btw, I did book one other consult with a highly rated place in Vancouver just to get a second quote. Walked in and it was an old drabby office. The orthodontist and staff weren't nearly as friendly/personable and their quote was over $1000 more than First Impression. So of course I walked out and ended up booking with First Impression.... and I'm glad I did! Anytime anyone is looking for an orthodontist in Burnaby, of course I have to refer Dr. Luu and his awesome staff!
