The current exhibition on Australian Indigenous Art "The Stars We Do Not See" is a stunning example of how much there is to gain and appreciate from going to see something you know nothing about. I particularly enjoy the tours, ongoing programs and lectures that the Museum offers. In conjunction with with the Aboriginal exhibit, the monthly "Mindful Looking" program offered a deep dive into one painting in that exhibit as a group of maybe 50 patrons listened in rapt attention as the curator of "The Stars We Do Not See" gave us a deep understanding of not only how that piece was made, but also its historical, symbolic and hidden perspectives. This is just a tiny slice of the education, amazement and enjoyment the Denver Art Museum has to offer. It's a treasure.

I suggest grabbing a map or downloading it on your phone. The Hamilton Building has several floors and houses arts of Africa & Oceania, indigenous arts of North America, Western American art, architecture and design galleries, modern and contemporary art. At the ground floor, there's a spacious gift shop. The Martin Building is an 8-story building with lots of glass tiles. It has indigenous arts of North America, Asian art, Latin American art & art of the Ancient Americas, European/American art before 1900, photography, textile art, fashion and major architecture and design collection. Both buildings are good to explore; but if you're pressed for time, I'd recommend going to The Kirkland first (which is my favorite).

Because hello, Segways are a TON of fun, and a great way to get up close to attractions without having to walk or being stuck on a bus! However, this tour in particular wasn't one of the better ones we've been on. Because the storage/training area is in a parking garage, you meet your guide outside a nearby restaurant so they can take you into the alley and down to the secret Segway closet (seriously DOWN a massive ramp, which may be intimidating for inexperienced riders). The instructions explicitly state that restrooms are available inside the restaurant...but for a 10am tour, they're not open yet. Luckily, the Panera next door was happy to give us the code for their restrooms. The Segways themselves have obviously seen WAY better days. Our guide apologized for being late due to having to inflate the tires, but the handlebars were banged up, my Segway made a constant clanking/rattling noise from one wheel, and the guide ended up riding one with a low battery because no others with fully inflated tires were available. The available helmets were in similar rough condition. While our guide was friendly enough, knew the basic spiels for the stops, and even texted me in advance of the tour to confirm we knew where we were going (and when he was running late), he also seemed pretty lackadaisical (although pleasant) and didn't wear a helmet. I was also annoyed that, for some reason, we didn't receive the waivers via email ahead of time, so we had to fill them out on the guide's phone. In hindsight, he wasn't checking anything, so I should've just lied and said we'd already signed... On the upside, we were the only two people signed up, so we got a longer tour and more stops that we would have otherwise. Since we've ridden Segways before, we also got to skip the training -- we just hopped on and demonstrated that yup, we know what we're doing. A vast improvement over watching 10+ people slowly get the hang of it! And of course, we really enjoyed seeing a wide variety of Denver spots up close and personal, and learning at least a little bit about some of them. So while you can't ever really go wrong with a Segway tour, definitely head into this one with open eyes about what to expect.

Staying at the Hotel Teatro was a mistake we won't make twice…read more We were created by the friendly staff and checked in and offered a prosecco or soda. That was great and I highly recommend the prickly pear soda. They are walkable to a lot of restaurants and the opera house, and also offer car service within 2 miles. Very handy. But that's where the good ends for me. Our room was tucked up behind the elevators among a bunch of weird little stairs, like the most unimpressive Escher painting. It was very dark with only 2 lamps and 2 bedside lights. We could have opened the wall of windows, but because the doors and windows were not properly sealed, the only way to keep the freezing cold air rushing in was to keep the blackout curtains closed. The heat worked well, but cycled frequently and was very loud. The intake is next to the bed, so it disrupted our sleep. The fitness center was sad. There was one treadmill, one bike, one elliptical, and one weight bench, which is fine, but only 5-12 lb and 25-50lb weights (nothing between). Also, it was 82 degrees and there is no cold water available. It does not appear to have been swept or vacuumed in weeks. I used one of 2 beat up mats and from the ground could really see the filth. At check in, we were given a wooden nickel ($10 credit) for each night and told we could use it in the hotel restaurant, The Nickel. They only offer breakfast in Saturday and Sunday, so we went our 2nd day. I got the shakshuka, and when it arrived there were 2 poached eggs on top, not cooked in the sauce. NBD until I took a bite and all the sauce was room temp, as though it has just come out of a jar. There were areas slightly above room temperature, like it had been under a heat lamp. Wildly disappointing. My BF thought his avocado toast was pretty basic for the price. We tried to spend our last wooden nickel that night, getting a drink there, and were told it was only good in the other lounge area, which is odd since we both heard them tell us the nickel was for the Nickel. We ended up paying $42 for 2 small apps (a single croquette and 3 tiny gourges) and a glass of wine. I wouldn't have gotten anything but we wanted to burn the credit and BF wanted a snack with his wine. So we paid full price. Overall, very expensive for what it was. This is a 3-star hotel on it's best day, and someone needs to investigate the kitchen. We also feel deceived about the daily credit.

Had some family staying here and they said the rooms were not great and wouldn't book here again. Not sure why the Christmas tree takes up half of the lobby mid January. PRO TIP: try avoiding the most back row if you have long legs or any stress with mobility. Because once you sit there, the seat is assigned and you will have to deal with being cramped in a tighter space. And you basically are always the last one to get off. This was one of the biggest cons. Moving on, the tour itself was great. We stopped by a cafe on the way to and back, for food and bathroom breaks, and pretty soon, the van took us to the Rocky Mountain with beautiful views and even saw many wildlife - the big horn sheep, elk, deer (i think), and, not to forget, smaller animals like birds, mouse, and chipmunks, but no moose spotted. Nonetheless, the breathtaking view of the Rockies is certainly worth the journey. The guide was very knowledgeable about trees and shared many stories about the places and tips for visiting Denver in general! She also took us to a few Native American owed stores that featured indigenous art that were very cool to see. One thing to note is that I think the Colorado Sightseer, the tour company, had listed at least two slightly different itineraries, and I might have been sent to the one I did not pick. I noticed because I intentionally picked the tour with visits to two visitor centers, vs the one I went on only took us to Beaver Meadows. Not a big deal bc I did get still get my stamp, and the tour used most of the day's time efficiently by visiting many attractions. But this might be something you want to make sure if the stops matter a lot to you. Nonetheless, with a group tour, it is understandable and expected for the itinerary to potentially change. For instance, the day I went, the tour guide actually too us to visit places in different order to avoid crowds. Another thing to really appreciate is that the tour provided some snacks, extra gloves/beanies, which were really a lifesaver in the cold mountains. I know I was not fully prepared for it and so glad I could borrower some!
