Joel is awesome. Super-fast communication. He helped me make it cheaper -- even giving me some ideas I didn't end up using. I designed my wedding invitation in InDesign and he made it look even better without cramping my style. I have gotten so so many comments about how great they look, which of course inflates my ego, but I couldn't have done it without Dependable Letterpress. The studio is super awesome, with a lot of old-timey looking machines (including one that used to put the perforations in stamps which we used for our reply cards). This isn't your run-of-the-mill printshop, but that's why you go here. The best way to sum up my experience with this company is the sound that my clients made when I opened the box of their business cards. Mostly it was silence or a little gasp out how pretty the cards looked. I heard things like... "ooh.. I love letterpress cards", and " it's a quality that you can tell". People would hold the card in the light and move it back and fourth... just getting an sense of how pretty this little piece of paper was. I worked with Liz over the phone. She was efficient and gave me great estimates on time. I appreciated that I had a free press check and they were able to process my rush order a day early. I also appreciated that they were able to bill me or take my payment after the print job was completed. When I picked up my cards on site, I also met Joel the owner. It was nice to know he was watching over the quality of the prints. I also was able to see what some other designers had created in the several boxes of cards on the table. It's making me chomp at the bit to create something else for them to print. These cards are not cheap... but then.. that's the point. They LOOK expensive. Anyone that gets your card knows that you took your marketing to the next level and that you're taking yourself seriously. read more

Joel at Dependable Letterpress is great! I've been sending clients for their high-end print jobs for years. Just because they are high-end, they aren't overly high-cost. I did a price quote for offset printing vs letterpress for a client and lettepress was actually more inexpensive! Letterpress printing is an art and Joel and his team really know the nuances that these great printers can create. They always offer their $0.02 in design suggestions that would really make the design pop. I'm almost through my business cards and can't wait to get the next set printed here. read more

Way back in 2009 Joel & crew printed our wedding invitations. Seriously easy going and professional people, with competitive prices (even more so if you're a designer & get everything plate/press ready), and full of helpful suggestions. My husband and I are a designer/artist duo, but didn't want the stress of printing ourselves. They even called us when the colors we chose "didn't look good together", which they didn't (we should have known better, bad duo), & we promptly adjusted the color right on the press. I was concerned about price, and I know that letterpress is such an art. I wanted something nice, and we asked for a quote. Joel gave us a quote and even recommended that there were cheaper ways to make the sticker if we wanted to save money. I wanted something that showed quality, and was committed to letterpress. I ordered in bulk, 500 stickers, and they came out to .60cents each. I am very impressed with the final product and price. Joel is professional and easy to work with. It takes a lot for me to log in and write a review. But I couldn't hold back on writing one for Joel at Dependable Letterpress. As a designer, I have brought my work here for the following reasons: 1 // Joel is invaluable at looking at design challenges and knowing exactly how to tackle them. He can look at your design and answer questions you didn't even know you had. He is great to brainstorm with for convoluted projects. 2 // He is so good at emails and handling the million changes that your client may have. Patience.... he has it in bucketfuls. 3 // The quality is the best in SF: the final product is perfect, not a letter out of place and the paper selection is wonderful. When possible, i try to get a client to print with letterpress not just for the luxe factor, but because I know Dependable will take the extra steps to make sure the work is perfect. I love them and you will too. (Now, if i can convince every client to go with letterpress, my job would be easier.) read more

Great work, 5 stars...but there was an error on their part. Customer service gone ass-backwards. The solution? Not printing the cards that would make the customer happy. Joel refused to complete the order and said that in the printing business, they just refund the money, and saying that the error was such a small percentage of the order it wouldn't be worth their while to fix their error. Instead of getting my complete order, I was ushered out with a check i couldn't even cash. I'd understand had I spent $300, $400, or even $700, but I spent over $1,000.00 on these cards. You should make your customer happy. In the future, I will go elsewhere. For the amount of money i spent, I expected exceptional customer service. read more

If you want the best quality letterpress product, this is the place to go in all of San Francisco! It may be expensive, but us as graphic designers should know this going into the sale in the first place. It's a old craft, but a quality and respected one at that. I had my wedding invitations and a special side project printed by Joel and his team. They are the nicest people ever and they really enjoy their craft. They took every detail very seriously and was always so pleasant to work with. When they first printed my invitations, they had mistakenly perforated the wrong panel (I had a tear-off panel for the rsvp). This was of course unexpected. Joel was so apologetic and immediately offered to remedy this by reprinting everything again. This was unfortunate for all of us because it delayed our time line by 1 day or 2 and Joel had to eat the cost and create more work for himself. Things happen, people make mistakes, but the important thing was that Joel took full responsibility, fixed the problem and was gracious the whole time. read more

This is a long over due review. How long over due ... about 3 years. We were married August 2005 and Joel at Dependable Press was our printer. Dependable is an understatement - more like exceptional. Exceptional pricing, exceptional attention to detail, exceptional service and quality. Letterpress is truly an art beyond any description I am capable of providing. Those who have experienced it will never go back to just printing. We were on a small budget for our 50 guests wedding but 1 thing we were not cutting corners on was the invitations. Joel worked with us to develop the perfect product, even going so far as to allowing us to provide the drawing to be used. The quality you get from these guys is unmatched in my opinion. In my quest to get business cards I interacted quite a bit with Liz and found her style, approach and demeanor to be outstanding.
