The whole industrial look is definitely overused nowadays, but this is different. It feels so authentic because it actually used to house factories, and some machinery is still there, surrounded by quintessential stylish Dutch design. It's quite inspiring how much creativity is within every single little shop. On the third Sunday of every month, this is the venue for Feelgood Market, a pretty big collection of food / handmade goods / music / more. Such great vibes in a unique location. Kinderdijk literally means "Children's Dike" in Dutch. The Origin Story is a Famous Dutch Legend -- that during a massive flood in the 1400s, rescuers found a cradle floating on the water. Inside was a baby -- and a cat jumping back and forth to keep the cradle balanced so it wouldn't tip over. When people saw this cradle drifting toward the dike, they called the place Kinderdijk = Kinder (child) + dijk (dike). Once you walk into the area, you would feel like you've entered a fairy, legendary place. The area is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful, with tall, majestic windmills rising above the landscape. It is a must visit spot whenever you're in the Netherlands.

Running through the heart of Utrecht, the Oude Gracht ('old canal') is the major artery of the…read morecity. It's lined with many shops at street level and bars and restaurants at the level below. It also hosts a weekly flower market on Saturday morning. Yes, it can get a tiny bit seedy at night with rowdy students ('bralapen') and it isn't always as clean as one would like, but this all adds to the charm. It's truly a wonderful place to hang out any time of day or year. The oude gracht was built in the 1100's by upgrading and taming a former branch of the River Rhine. The mooring level (accessible by steep steps from road level), where goods would be loaded and unloaded, gives access to deep tombs / caverns that extend below the road and under the shops above. In the old days used for storage, they have now mostly been transformed into bars and eateries. It's hard to miss the oude gracht when you're in Utrecht as many of the city's landmarks, including the Dom tower / church and various museums are located close by. Enjoy this place. It's awesome. But, be careful of bicyclists as you stroll around; you'll likely have your eyes on façades or the water below!

I came here for a wedding reception, and this was a quaint and romantic venue. There's even a small…read moremoat around the castle and a bridge crossing it. The courtyard was made of cobblestone and the green meadow in the background made for a very picturesque scene. One of the large rooms was reserved for dinner and dancing. The room was a pretty decent size holding at least 15 large round tables. There were convenient restrooms and a makeshift coat room. There were actually two wedding receptions happening on the same night, so it's good to know they can accommodate multiple parties. They had a good sound system as the music was blasting! There was also a relatively large parking lot with free parking! They conduct tours (with or without guides) until 5:30pm, but the ticket office closes at 4:30pm. Unfortunately, we arrived after the ticket office had closed. The castle looks like it would be interesting inside, and it would be a quick stopover on the way to somewhere else. Thanks for making the night a charming and memorable wedding reception!

It was wonderful because there was only a few people there and you can basically wander around the castle wherever you want with a book to kind of guide you. There were a couple cool audio rooms that explained more about the castle and lots of fun and games for kids. The castle is very well preserved and I can imagine being even more beautiful in the spring or summer with the mote around it. I had a great stroll around.

On another cold, very wet day I once again visited. I'll probably have visited 4 to 5 times over the last 15 years on the way or leaving Maastricht where I was attending meetings. Each time I go I see new things and learn new things of the men buried there and the men and women who take care of the Cemetry. It's a beautiful place. If you can watch a uTube video on the history and the symbolism of the monuments and statues prior to going. There's free parking and restrooms available and I recommended you take the time to visit the visitor center and chat with the staff and sign the visitor's log.

I believe if you have a love for history or appreciation for the men and women that liberated Europe, then you will find this memorial sight as one of the most impressive monuments in Europe. It was an honor for me to view the names and information of the brave men who fought in World War II. The layout of the memorial has: Memorial Tower, The Mourning Woman Statue, Court of Honor with Reflecting Pool, The Maps, The Chapel and The Crown in the Chapel. The cemetery has a rich historical background site of the Romans, Charlemagne,Charles V, Napoleon,Kaiser Whilhelm II, German troops, and US troops. At the end of your visit, please make sure to sign the guest register book commemorating these brave heroes who served in World War II. What I also found remarkable was that the people of the Netherlands continue to honors these men fallen of war, by adopting a grave. A Dutch friend of mine had showed me the grave site, and personal records of the soldier that she adopted. It was so profound to have the opportunity to review his records.
