Oberlaa Kurbad Torte: Many thin layers of cake alternating with thin layers of cream. Tasted kinda chocolatey and kinda caramelly. And it was delicious! Sacher Torte: Finally tried the famous sacher torte. To be honest, it kinda just tastes like a dense chocolate cake. The apricot jam layer is very thin, so you barely taste it against the rich chocolate. Kardinal Schnitte: Perhaps the most memorable cake I tried. It was so light and fluffy. Felt like clouds of meringue surrounding a light cream. Also, had a very subtle light taste. Maroni-Obers Torte: Lots of nice sweet chestnut paste alongside fluffy cake. Quite yummy. Topfen-Frucht Torte: A few layers of sweet and tart fruit and then some layers that reminded me of cheesecake. Trüffel Torte: It was in the same format was the Oberlaa Kurbad Torte with many alternating layers of cake and cream. Except this one was all chocolate. They have some nice niche beers available (not just Ottakringer from the tap) including a refreshing Lammsbrau. They have a bunch of wooden tables and chairs in front of the cafe, letting you enjoy the fresh air and the ambiance of the best part of Josefstadt, with its cobblestone street, rustic street lamps, and the magnificent Piaristenkirche at the end of the block. My friend tried one of their galettes (with ham and goat cheese) and the small bite that I tasted was amazing and enough to convince me to come back for brunch very soon!

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). First off, the interior is STRIKING, a work of art in its own right with marble columns, stylish looking cafe tables, and paintings every where you go. But, oh!--the cakes--and the coffees! I had me an iced coffee that had a great body mixed with a delicate flavor to give me a jolt through the day. The hazelnut cake was airy and fluffy, not at all too sweet like American desserts have a tendency to be! The staff here move efficiently, and I love how there's no pressure to hurry up and pay your bill or make your order. A repeat place to be sure if I were to go back to Vienna.
