I've never experienced or heard of such an extensive consultation as the one that my mum was given in the first appointment- the dentist not only cares about dental decay and obvious problems in the mouth but also asks if patients are happy with their smile, whether they suffer from headaches (and whether they could be linked to teeth problems), gave lots of explanations none of which was rushed (so unlike everything she experienced!)! She was then sent a report that listed all her options such that she could freely make up her mind, lots of brochures, and was told she could call any time if she had a question on any of those - wow. I was similarly impressed when she came back to do the treatment- Eamonn and Isabella have a great synergy and while being efficient they were never short of extra explanations or making her comfortable (btw, have you ever been given sunglasses at the dentist so you're not disturbed by the bright light? standard in this practice, havent seen that before). Eamonn made adjustments to the denture as long as it was necessary to fit well. If you are looking for a dentist that takes your well-being serious and does not just look at you like you were a money bag (sadly, both my mum and myself had that with other dental practices), then go here and search no more. Compliments also to the rest of the practice team, each of them is friendly and treated us well.

The practice is set in the iconic Brook House in the centre of Swadlincote, which is subdivided into different areas for dental and hygienist work. Dentists have come on and gone, but all have been affable, positive and above all honest, which has always been refreshing. Disappointingly they have removed the ever present tropical fish tank in the waiting room, that used to be an effective distraction from your impending fillings etc. The magazines on offer as you wait are an eclectic mix of publications like National Geographic and Steam Engine weekly?, all of which are several years out of date! Going to the dentist is one of my least favourite things to do in life, but at least at Hughes and Owen I know that I will receive the very highest level of service.

After looking online I stumbled across Cavendish Dental Care. They address nervous patients and have their prices online, so it is quite transparent. When I rang up, they were able to register me over the phone, although they do take a £40 fee to ensure that you do turn up to your consultation. She did inform me that they weren't taking NHS patients as of a couple weeks ago, but that was fine with us. We don't seem to be in any catchment area, but we need a dentist, so we registered anyway. There is a small amount of parking out front of the office, but I think the closest car park is the Rose Hill Car Park, unless you can find some parking on one of the streets nearby. They do close at lunch time so if you are trying to make an appointment or turn up a bit early for your appointment just after lunch, you'll have to wait until everyone returns. The waiting area is quite large with dental equipment for purchase behind the desk. There is a t.v. with images and ads playing... in fact some of the diagrams of various dental problems were quite interesting as I've not seen anything like that before. When I went back to meet the dentist, I was pleasantly surprised at how modern and welcoming the room was. When they recline the chair, you'll notice a t.v. above the chair that you can focus on. Although rather than a t.v. show, it just had BBC Radio 2 on. The dentist is very soft spoken and very gentle. While I didn't feel pressured at all, I can already tell that they are suggesting services and as we have registered as private patients... it will probably cost a pretty penny. For example, I still have a baby tooth, but there is no adult tooth to replace it. As a result, my previous dentists have advised me to take care of it and said with care it will probably last for a long time. At this appointment they were already talking about implants for it, but apparently it still looks healthy and there is no movement... However, as long as there is no pressure into services that aren't needed immediately, then we will get on just fine.

He is ideal for patients who are nervous or anxious. It is never true to say that going to the dentist is pain free, but he makes sure you knwo when something bad is going to happen, so you can prepare yourself. He is very gentle with the injections (I have had dentists who leave you sore for a week afterwards) and he is very professional and explains all your options. Although they only accept kids as NHS patients, they have a scheme where you can pay monthly or you can be a private patient for quite reasonable fees.

For about the past 6 years I have had the good fortune to be attended to by an excellent lady dentist who is both professional and friendly and who is particularly good with children. The lady on reception has worked there since before I first attended and she too has a extremely friendly and professional manner.
