Let me start by saying--I hate going to the dentist. It takes more mental preparation than running a marathon. I need to hype myself up just to book the appointment, and then double that to actually show up. But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. informed me during my visit I was due for a full x ray when I wasn't. Billed me $100 after insurance. When I spoke to the receptionist Nicole (who was by far the most condescending person I've ever spoken to), she kept telling me that it's ultimately my responsibility and that I should've said no or waited 4 months for when the 5 year x ray would be covered by insurance. She was really good reading her responses to me like a politician. She then proceeded to talk down to me as if I was a child and place the blame on me even though I was TOLD I WAS DUE FOR AN X RAY. I never thought I'd say this but going to the dentist was awesome today! I genuinely enjoyed my visit today. The dental work was great but what really stood out was the attention I was given by Daniel and the team. I was having not the greatest day which was completely unrelated to dental but Daniel showed real concern and actually gave me some thoughtful tips on how to solve a problem I had. I am a hygienist who "subs" in different dental offices in the Lansing area. I love this office and highly recommend Dr. Derksen. He has state-of-the-art equipment, a staff who all like their jobs (a happy office staff is an indication of a good boss), and I've seen beautiful work in the mouths of his patients. This was easily the best dentist experience I've had. Growing up I was lucky enough to go to the dentist twice a year until I was in my early 20s. After I went off to grad school I never bothered to try to find another dentist when I was living out of state because it seemed like a hassle. After moving to Lansing in 2016 I went to my first dentist appointment after about 5-6 years without seeing one at all(not Derksen Dentistry). I've always taken care of my teeth/mouth and had never had a cavity or filling. I never needed braces. The other dentist claimed I had 2 cavities and could not get normal cleanings anymore because my gum health was so bad I would require regular "deep cleanings" at over $800 a visit after my very good dental insurance. I sucked it up and assumed that was it for me, even though I doubted my still very healthy looking mouth could be in THAT bad of shape. It's now been almost 3 years and I never went back after the first deep cleaning because of how painful it was. My sister discovered Derksen Dentistry and when I had what I thought was a toothache from a cavity, she happily suggested I give them a try. I was able to get an appointment later in the week. I am so so happy I did!! The staff was all so friendly and helpful. The tech did an amazing job cleaning my teeth and didn't think there was anything wrong that would require a deep cleaning. No cavity was found. It turns out my clenching and grinding at night was worse than I thought. So they suggested (but didn't try to make me feel like I had to), having a splint/night guard made which should help with the wear on my teeth and ease my frequent headaches and jaw/neck soreness. They let me know exactly how much the whole process would cost (waaaay less than I'd been quoted in the past) and were able to schedule each within a week to come back for the fitting. 100% satisfied with my first visit. read more

I have been using doctor. Derksen since he took over for my Retiring dentist doctor Gallagher. He's a wonderful dentist very caring and gentle and has been very sensitive to my fear of Dental visits. I like him very much and he is taking excellent care of my dental needs. I also have great respect for his Dental assistants and office help. It's all good! read more

Superb, enthusiastic, helpful dentist. He's thoughtful, patient, and he really listens. I also love the way he's updated the practice (via email updates, etc.) that he took over from Dr. Gallagher who was a great dentist in his own right. I was worried about someone new after being with Gallagher for so many years. I needn't have been. Derksen's the cream of the crop. read more
