New to the area so I was looking for a barber that was open on a Monday, came across Derrick and Darren's who surprisingly was open on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) !! At first, I thought the hours of operation was wrong. Nope!! Indeed they were open!! The owner Derrick, gave me directions to his shop (as they are "tucked away" behind other shops along Georgia Avenue). The shop was clean and the staff was welcoming, kind, and courteous!! Good haircuts, nice atmosphere but at $27 for a teen cut I'd say this place is 3$$$ not 2$$. Probably going back to my regular place for my boys where the cuts are 18$ for men 14$ for teens. I was faced with one of those life decisions when I came to the Silver Spring area: finding a new barber. I think that I can attest for a good majority of men on Yelp that a good barber is hard to find based on your overall preferences. A barber can make you feel like a million bucks, or make you feel like a Bernie Madoff on the way to a 150 year prison sentence for owing millions. Well, you get my drift. I decided to cut to the chase and make a visit to Derrick and Darren's in the Wheaton area. This barbershop is located in near some other stores in a small strip, where a public, coin-operated parking lot resides. Upon my first visit to D&D, I called them up and spoke with Derrick, the owner. I told him the appointment time requested and what I would be getting. Once I got there, I was ready for the inaugural haircut. Derrick and Darren's Barbershop has been around since the mid '90s and is still going strong. The layout consists of a wide-screen television, four barber chairs, a couple snack machines, and a fish tank. I threw the fish tank in there just because. After the first cut, I'll say that I was pretty impressed. Honestly, the haircut was one of the best I have ever received. After my first visit, I wanted to go around the Silver Spring area and try out other barbers, but I realized that I didn't need to. After the second and third cuts, my decision was clear: Derrick and Darren's is the way to go for the future. Each time I make an appointment, I am in the chair in reasonable time (no more than 10 minutes tops) and the quality of the haircut is great. Derrick takes his time and makes sure you are satisfied in the end without the need of rushing. I'm glad I made the choice to D&Ds first. One more thing, the owner is a Redskins fan, so I do feel sorry for him. I have already sent him my condolences. read more

Decided to try out a new barber based on the recommendation of Yelp Reviewers and a friend that used to frequent the shop when he lived in the area. Moved to the DMV area about 4 years ago and currently reside in Bethesda. Was loyal to another local barber until reoccurring incidents made me leave. Called this shop Saturday right before closing time to make an appointment for Sunday morning prior to church service. Derrick answered, was pleasant and gave me an appointment without hesitation. The shop was easy for my GPS to find (near Wheaton Plaza), ample off street parking, clean, cozy, and pleasant. Derrick remembered our phone conversation and took my son immediately. Did a phenomenal job and I couldn't be more pleased. My 11 year old son even loved his hair cut and he doesn't really care for the upkeep of his hair. I am a single mother of one. The norm is usually for the father or man of the house to take the son to the barber but in my situation, his father lives 2 hours away so it's my responsibility to maintain his outer appearance. I say this to say, the shop was homely (females would understand that Lol), had a beautiful fish tank and inviting. I didn't feel uneasy in the shop and the music was not that rap cursing style that you would hear in some but more mellow R&B. I would recommend this shop to anyone looking for a new barber and will be making another appointment in 2 weeks. We have found our new home. read more

Vernon, my barber, introduced himself and welcomed me to the shop. I was asked what I wanted done but I left it up to Vernon after little consultation. I'm thoroughly pleased with the results! After the cut, Vernon introduced me to the owner, Derrick. I watched Derrick cut a client while I was in the chair. Both barbers are great and highly skilled in their craft! The barbershop is very clean and everyone seems to be very friendly when you walk in. I made an appointment and didn't have to wait long to be seen. I am very particular about my haircut if I'm going to pay almost $30 for a haircut. I will have to say that my haircut was subpar even after I stated exactly what I wanted. I was visiting a relative in the hospital here. I'd been here about a wk and needed a cut when I first got here. After scouring the net I decided to give them a shot. Upon entering the shop I noticed the place was neat and tidy. There was only one customer ahead of me. I believe it was a Wednesday and thus a slow day. The atmosphere was very relaxed considering I was a total stranger. The TV was playing Youtube videos of Babyface. That was the music the entire time I was there. That said my cut was tight and if I'm ever in the area again I'll reference this review to find 'em again. read more

I came here needing a seemingly SIMPLE haircut which consisted of a #1 all the way around and a shape-up. I left with my hair well below a #1 (didn't even know that existed), my entire shape-up line was cut by the barber and his shaver, literally cuts all along my head, and finally my beard cut after I specifically said, "do not touch it, I'm growing it out." This also took far longer than it needed to (over an hour). I went to my stylist of 3 years and she was taken aback by how awful of a job they did here. She was the one who informed me that my hair was lower than a #1. The owner laughed at my haircut after I spoke with him about it and I didn't (and wasn't going to) pay anything but it isn't going to give me my over an hour for a "#1 and a shape-up" back plus getting my head chopped up and beard I was growing out back. This place is also actively involved in "cause stalking" so I would stay far away from here. read more

I'm not going to slam my previous barber. I'm just going to say, you get what you pay for. A great barber should not only be good at cutting hair. Wow! Where do I begin??? I found Derrick and Darren's Barbershop on the Internet. Nowadays, it's very important to have a website so that potential customers can get an idea of where they are going. The shop is located in a strip mall with parking. It's rather crazy looking for parking during the evenings, but getting a spot wasn't too difficult. I walked in the door and was immediately greeted by Derrick the owner. He was very friendly and cordial. The shop itself is impeccable. It is super clean and tastefully decorated, including a fish tank with exotic fish. Ramon was my barber. After I sat in his chair, he asked me a bunch of questions of how I wanted my hair cut, did I want a line up, how short on the sides, etc. He was very attentive and stopped during the cut to let me see his progress. He's also very personable. He even trimmed the top of my hair with scissors!! After my haircut, he put a moisturizer in my hair. It definitely made my cut look great. I was visiting my wife's family in Rockville during Christmas and I needed a haircut. I made an appointment and Derek responded the next morning. I came in 15 minutes early for my 9am appointment and Derek was nice enough to take me in early. To my surprise he had an 830am that was late. He mentioned that he keeps his appointment with everyone and if someone is late that is on them. I really appreciated his great customer service. Instead of me waiting for his 830am appointment to arrive, he kept my 9am on time. Derek gave me great mid bald fade. I recently cut off all of my hair and it was essential to find a barber so that I could keep up my new short look. As a female, I found out that it's challenging to find a good barber that is capable of cutting women's hair without making us look masculine. My father has been coming to Derrick and Darren's for over 12 years and he told me to try it out. The moment I went into the shop, I immediately was welcomed by the friendly barbers and felt right at home. The first time I went to the shop, Mr. Derrick asked me if liked my last cut (done somewhere in DC). I replied no. He then took the time to explain to me that women's hair should be cut differently than men. One thing that really stuck with me that Mr. Derrick said was, "I should be able to see you in the far distance and know right away that your a female based off of how your hair is cut. A woman's cut should look soft, not boxed up". After Mr. Derrick cut my hair, I was in complete shock and amazed. I received my first cut at Derrick and Darren's in October of 2012, and I have been going back every 2 weeks since then. And for those who think $21 is "too much for a cut", I can assure that this will be one of the best investments you'll ever make. At Derrick and Darren's, the barbers take the time to cater to your specific head and hair type to ensure that you receive the best cut as possible to not only make you look good, but feel good/confident.
