This was our 4th stay at Desolation hotel. I've written a review already but since then, we've stayed in their townhomes with and without our kids. The townhomes are beautiful and have 3 levels. I see they've made some improvements- probably based on families. The stairs are steep, so with two kids running around, it can be nerve wrecking. I saw they added nice child gates to the top of their sets of stairs. In the townhomes, you have 3 levels and 2 patios: one patio on the second floor (living area with a half bath) with an egg chair and table setting. The third level is the bed space and that patio has the soaking tub and a little seating area. Their main bathroom is huge- beautiful modern shower with a huge soaking tub for two. The soaking tub takes some agility getting in and out, but is nice and deep and has jets. It takes a while to fill up, but once it does, it's really relaxing. We love how both walls next to the sliding glass doors on both levels have a see thru fireplace. Such a cute, romantic detail that's nice to have running while you're relaxing. The heated floors in the bathroom are an added perk. Oh! And you get your own garage- even though you still have to access the home from outside the garage. They are incredible accommodating. They have a list of things offered on request like kids toys, hygiene kits, ironing board, etc. They get added points for having those really expensive amazing Dyson hair dryers as their hair drying option too It's one of our favorite places to stay! read more

Never stayed in a Yurt before. Was a beautiful and unique experience. The people who work in and around this property are so lovely, professional and willing to help. The bed was so damn comfy out of all the hotels that I have stayed at. This was just like sleeping in my own bed, soft and firm to just so cozy! Such a cute, clean spot. Modern and luxurious, but still has that Tahoe charm. They have everything you need in the unit (from cutlery and cookware to toiletries). Short 10 min walk to the shops, restaurants, stateline, and beach. Would absolutely stay here again! They had a guitarist/singer who performed at the patio of the hotel's restaurant on one of the nights we were there and he was amazing (wish I caught his name)! We listened to him from our balcony for hours...he even acknowledged us and nodded our direction a few times when he noticed us watching, haha :) Our pup joined us on this particular trip and he enjoyed his stay too! read more

Had an amazing experience at the Desolation Hotel last weekend. The room was very comfortable, bathroom was spacious and the rain shower and outdoor tub were wonderful. The location is hard to beat - just a short walk to the village, restaurants and chairlift! Don't forget to check out the on site restaurant Maggie's. We had delicious short rib there for dinner and the breakfast omelet is so good. 10/10 recommend a stay here! read more

What a beautiful addition to the South Lake Tahoe community. It's brings such an upscale atmosphere but still with in walking distance from the Main Street. I stayed here for two nights this past April 2024 and look forward to my next visit. We stayed in the studio which had a full kitchen, bed, couch with pull out bed. Tons of storage, full bathroom and patio with an outdoor tub. Since it was April we caught one day with a little snow and the next day was low 70s and we got to dip in the pool which is heated. The highlight of the hotel is Maggie's restaurant we were at the bar every night and we did brunch one day the short ribs Benedict was amazing! read more

When: June 15-17 Building C-5 or was it B -5 Everything is in the details and communication, good attitudes, even better friends What to know before you go: I started this list of places and things important to my husband and I for our anniversary. I had a list of hotels I was calling them up, crossing off my must haves and compromises, when I got Stefani man was I happy she answered, friendly attentive sold me on how DH pretty much had everything I wanted (e-bikes $65, clear SUP free).. etc etc The perks of staying here is a Techies dream def in the thoughtful details of the townhome. Definitely Definitely forgot to factor in Altitude Sickness. Not that it changed my plans but I did experience it while staying at DH and might have helped knowing the telltale signs ahead of time. TIPS: Their lobby hours are 7:30/8am to 9pm. The pool and gym 7:30-10pm, their sauna is by appointment (for hygienic reasons) to clean in between guests, and maggie's closes at 9p or 10p. The townhomes are (standard garages) so be prepared for a tighter fit if you bring a truck like we did. additionally, two flights of stairs in townhomes. (be careful) I sure wasn't! (ha-ha) Def suggest scaling down on your wardrobe & luggage if staying in the townhouse. They have dyson hairdryers with the latest Extension Their entire team we met were so kind. They even gifted us a bottle of champagne upon our arrival that was delicious! Additionally the beautiful compound we were taken to on a private beach where Chet and Richard explained to us how to Stand Up paddle board! It was insane, but we loved it. The choppiest water for first timers but we did it! woo! This is why we came to Tahoe. I believe the people you meet the animals who greet you and the things you experience are how memories are made. DH delivered beyond any of our expectations. Tahoe & DH has become a new home away from home! TY DH and team for hosting us. We can't wait to share the footage with our friends and family. Fantastic new hotel a block from Main Street. Friendly staff and the room was great. We were there over the 4th of July. Definitely a 5 Star Hotel. The only draw back was its in a neighborhood full of 2 and 3 Star motels. The cheap motels drag down the area because rowdy, noisy drunken college students were running rampant. i didnt actually stay in the room, but i did go to the restaurants here. used the restroom and it was super clean and smells like lemon fresh. they also have sanitary items so for females that is a big thank you!!! i can see some of the balconies of the rooms and they look gorgeous. read more

Traveled from the SF Bay Area to Carson City on business. Lake Tahoe was calling.........I listened ! First of all, I was incredibly fortunate to speak with Jess. She was welcoming on the phone and in person. Without all the details of my somewhat complicated life (ha), I stepped into an oasis of comfort. Greeting me with a glass of wine, Jess detailed the generous amenities....easy walk to the beach, hot tub, pool, sauna, pelotons, Maggie's restaurant...and so much more. This hotel is stunning. My husband and I stayed here for our 8 year wedding anniversary and had such an amazing time. We relaxed on the balcony and ate dinner at Maggie's. We loved the sauna and even just relaxing by in the hot tub. We had a phenomenal time and could not stop raving about how beautiful and well thought out the entire property is. The only downfall is that the breaker tripped twice in our townhome making the power in the entire unit go out while we were there which was quite annoying for the amount we paid. The first time it happened we were lucky enough to catch the front desk woman before she left for the night. The second time it happened early in the morning which we could not access the garage(where the breaker is) without the help of the front desk so we had to wait until they arrived for their shift. She did say they filed a report with maintenance to check it out so hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else. Overall we will be back this was one of the most beautiful hotels we've stayed at. read more

The most beautiful hotel, the most friendly staff I would recommend this place to anyone ever wanting to visit lake Tahoe in general I would come back every summer and stay here specifically it was that amazing. From the minute we arrive we were taken care of less than a five minute check in the front desk was so sweet they even advised that our stay comes complementary with private lake access which the hotel provides you tickets for the rooms were absolutely stunning. I was obsessed with my personal soaking tub on the balcony very spacious. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need. If you are cooking, they also provide spices, which is nice. Spent this past weekend at Desolation for the 1st time and our stay was INCREDIBLE! Desolation Hotel does not only have beautiful grounds but amazing customer service as well. The hotel rooms our immaculate and you can't beat the location. It's centrally located in the heart of South Lake and just a short walk to the casinos and Heavenly Village. A very impressive amount of thought has gone into all the tiny details in each room. We absolutely loved our condo. It was by far the most comfortable stay I've ever had. They are even pet friendly which is a huge plus for all the dog lovers out there. There is nothing more you could need as they have truly thought of everything! Zero stars. We called the day prior to arrival and were told the check in time is at 4:00pm, but an early 3:00pm complimentary check in request would be added to our reservation. We arrived around 3:00 pm and were told the room was not ready. We came back at 4:00pm which is when the room check in is guaranteed and the room was still NOT ready. We asked for a manager. She showed up and said they should have had the room cleaned sooner, but they didn't. This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel - it is NOT! The person at the front desk wearing a stained polo shirt does not say "hello" or "welcome to..." when you arrive or offer any greeting or interaction. It's like you're checking into motel 6. Beware and stay away! If you expect a 5 star experience go to Edgewood. read more

If Four Seasons did a motel... I booked at the Desolation Hotel after seeing the great pictures on their website, and, well: they don't do it justice! This place is stylish and modern and clean and eco-conscious and GORGEOUS! I booked one of their hotel rooms, and it was just perfect for a luxurious ski weekend! Abundant art and tchotchkes made it feel just like home. The bathroom had both a nice stall shower, and a modest but deep soaking tub. It even had heated floors! The bath amenities and towels were top-notch, and very generously supplied. While I'm on the subject of baths: there was a KILLER soaking tub out on the balcony! I loved sitting out in the cold, dark night relaxing in the steamy water. In just one of the many, many thoughtful touches throughout this room, the soaking tub even had an overhead heat lamp to warm the floor so my feet didn't get cold when stepping out into the cushy provided slippers. If you got home from the slopes soon enough, the main pool and hot tub also offered a great place to relax. There were plenty of loungers surrounded by fire pits and heat lamps, along with some low jazz that just made it a wonderful oasis. The front desk was happy to provide pool towels, and the fluffy Frette bathrobes from the room kept me warm to and from. Inside the room, there was a cool "fire tornado" feature, which also kept the room super toasty. And the kitchen had everything you could possibly need to self-cater a ski weekend (or even week)! Seriously, I was shocked at how well-appointed the kitchen was. High-tech features abound, too: The WiFi is actually fast enough to use, AND the Ethernet port at the desk was enabled and even faster. When a quick moment of work popped-up, I had no trouble dealing with even large downloads. Bedside, there were very nice wireless/MagSafe chargers for three devices per side, and multiple outlets for your own chargers. Almost all the lights were on dimmers, too, so you could easily set the perfect mood. The bed was super comfortable, with Frette linens, and plenty of pillows, including a body/throw pillow. So was the couch, with nice throws and a cozy blanket. Storage-wise, there were two closets with drawers, a luggage stand, extra hooks, and even a boot tray! All the staff are super friendly and easy to work with. The cozy lobby has coffee and tea, and small selections of sodas, beer, and other sundries and merch. (The hats are very cool!) I'll be reviewing their (excellent!) on-site restaurant, Maggie's, separately, so go check that out, too! Just a few "be aware" items: 1. The hotel does not offer daily housekeeping, and this isn't clear from their website. Not a big deal, but it was slightly surprising at this price point. 2. The hotel's front office closed at 8, so make sure you call ahead or leave an accurate arrival time at booking, if you think you'll be later. They're very happy to leave a lockbox on your door with a key, which is great! 3. End rooms like A24 have a clerestory window that faces one of the hotels "townhome" buildings. This let's in a lot of light a night, and there's not window treatment. So, you may need to stuff a couple of pillows up there to get it dark enough to sleep. 4. The mini-split AC unit near the bed can make a lot of noise when it turns on or off, or when it's vanes move. If you can get it into a stage where it is stable, however, this isn't such a problem. read more

This was a birthday weekend getaway... Desolation is the most unique and beautifully designed hotels I have ever stayed at. My husband definitely treated me by booking this hotel. You can reserve a slot for your own private sauna. If you are too tired to find food they have a restaurant called Maggie's on the property. The best fries we have ever tasted. The hotel is near businesses and restaurants which makes it nice to walk everywhere. The girls at the front desk were friendly and offered us a drink while we checked in, which was thoughtful. Checking-in was a breeze and the only thing about parking is that it is limited. They say you can park across the street, but inside the property during the winter season is best due to snow plowers. I love how everything in this hotel was provided in our room. We chose Alpine studio, which was one of the more affordable options, but still just as amazing! Desolation is a modern micro-resort located between the lake and Heavenly Village. Close to Wholefoods and restaurants. Our room: Alpine Studio Parking: Lot (street parking avaialble if lot is full) What I LOVE: - Kitchenette with basically all you need to cook (utentils, oven, stove, microwave, pots & pans, fridge, spices, chemex coffee maker, plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, paper towels, dish soap etc.) - Minimalistic and modern design. Pictures don't do it justice. It's a super cute place. - Cleanliness. Love the wood and tile floorings and wood headboard (upholstered headboards are yucky). Our room is super clean. - For a small resort, it's amazing that they have a sauna, a pool, and a hot tub on site. There's a restaurant on the 3rd floor called Maggie's. Food and service are great. - Soft towels, robes, slippers, and dyson hair dryer are provided + heated bathroom floor. They give you extra shampoos and soaps so you don't have to ask the front desk for it. So nice. - Large bathtub on balcony!!! - Pet friendly - This hotel is very thoughtful and efficient. You can text them about anything instead of having to call. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Appreciate the smart controls and multiple smart phones chargers by the bed. - Small touches like a cotton blanket on the couch and a chemix coffee maker really make you feel like you're home. What I sorta don't like: - Lack of privacy. People can see into the balcony if you're staying on the 1st floor (you have to stay on the 1st floor if you're bringing a pet). No big deal. - Whoever staying in the room above us were walking around all night. We could heart the footsteps clearly. - Housekeeper forgot to refill coffee. **I would 100% recommend Desolation to others.** read more

We drove by one night as we were leaving the Kane Brown concert in south lake and drive by this beautiful hotel and said to ourselves "we're staying here for our Anniversary"and when our anniversary rolled around, sure enough we booked a room... the Granite Suite which is the only Granite Suite that have. First impression is Wooowwww. So beautiful. The front desk staff, Bethany, was so incredibly sweet as well. They have a heated pool and a hot tub as well with fire pits. They also have a delicious restaurant Maggie's too. We were blown away when we saw our room. It was huge!! It didn't feel like a hotel at all. Literally felt like home. So incredibly warm, cozy and welcoming. The bathroom was gorgeous and our bed had under lighting which was super cute. We had a beautiful fireplace in our room as well. The TVs had YouTube!!! I've never been to any hotels that had YouTube, Netflix, prime , etc. I felt right at home. We spent time in the stone tub on the balcony as well. They also had space heaters up top so you're not too cold as you soak outside. When it was time for us to leave, we chatted with Bethany again and asked if we can see how their other rooms looked like and she was so kind to show us. She's awesome. Came here for our babymoon in Dec 2024 and had an amazing stay in the El Dorado Townhome. It is so clean and every detail is so incredibly thoughtful. We loved the full kitchenette that had literally everything you could need including a fridge, freezer, full stove and microwave. The heated floors, blackout shades and private soaking tub were incredible. We enjoyed an incredible meal at Maggie's (a must do) and loved the pool area and gym amenities! Review from parents who stayed with 2 kids (ages 2 and 4). We booked the TOWNHOUSE, stayed Thurs-Sunday and it was an amazing stay and would definitely rebook. Walking 5 mins to Heavenly Ski Resort & restaurants. The townhouse option was amazing and thoughtfully designed & furnished. Not sure what the regular rooms are like but I guess it would be the same as well. There's a large swimming pool and good size hot tub, both of which are pretty shallow 4 ft at its deepest. Note: They don't provide water bottles in the units so make sure to bring water if you don't like drinking tap water. 1st floor garage is tight for SUV but I folded my mirrors in and was able to get in and out just fine. We drove up in a Tesla X and the garage has 2 charging options - ChargePoint and Tesla charger. There are several charging stations in their outdoor parking spots as well. 2nd floor has a 1/2 bath with heated floors, small kitchen (dishwasher, fridge, 4 burner stove, microwave, oven, utensils, pots, basic spices) balcony with outdoor dining table with 2 outdoor heaters, living room with smarttv and pullout couch, washer/dryer, fireplace. The pullout couch was a comfortable bed, so we were able to sleep comfortably with the 2 kids. We brought an air mattress just in case but the pullout couch was a much better option. L 3rd floor has the master bedroom with smarttv, with a closet with 2 robes and slippers, extra bedding and pillows for pullout couch, skylights with remote blinds, master bath with heated floors and super deep soaking tub and shower, and balcony with outdoor tub and 2 heat lamps, and another fireplace. Kids LOVED both the outdoor hot tub and indoor soaking tub. We requested a unit that has baby gates because the 2 sets of wooden stairs are a slippery hazard for kids. The baby gates look sleek because they retract/extend and clip on the other end but are essentially useless the way it's installed with a large gap underneath. My 2 year old learned in minutes that she can just crawl underneath to play on the stairs. So I don't recommend the townhouse for elderly with trouble on stairs, and very young kids. FLEXIPASS is an option to enter the unit and it works flawlessly. So nice not having to carry the key card. Just scan to open the front door and the garage door with the app on your phone. MAGGIES restaurant is right above the main lobby area. It's a tiny cozy restaurant with nice food and cocktails, and expect to spend around $80pp. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time because it's small and they'll book up fast. read more

It is lush with natural materials not blink blink kind of luxury. Pool is nice, restaurant is great, the room is fully "equipped " with a gas range too...lol. I had very high expectations of this place. The pool had so many bugs in it and the fireplace by the pool would not turn on and staff could not get it to work. Luckily, the fireplace on the other side was working and we moved to that area. Now the bed was very uncomfortable, the pillows were flat and sheets had visible stains. I slept on the pull out sofa bed instead. I did not enjoy my sleep at all. Housekeeping did not even vaccuum our room and didn't fold the sheets at all. It was lazily cleaned. Very few parking spots so I made sure we got back early so I can get the same spot. I give it three stars because staff was friendly and they tried their best to be accommodating. I appreciated the kind service at Maggie's, but was not impressed with the food. The bathroom was my favorite...very picky with bathrooms and it was beautiful. Enjoyed my showers and my kids loved the balcony zen inspired bath tub. Overall, it was a mediocre experience and would not return to this hotel. read more

Absolutely magnificent experience! What a beautiful hotel in a prime location. We stayed in a townhouse and loved the entire space. The design of the rooms are so beautiful, are furnished with comfortable furniture, and are extremely clean. Love all of the amenities in the room, including the bathtub on the balcony, the amazing swing chair, and the bathtub in the bathroom. Everything is what you expect to get in 2023 in a luxury hotel. So much more modern and well thought out that the large majority of hotels on the market. The gym is wonderful for a quick workout. An absolute gem in Tahoe. I almost don't want to share this as I'd like to keep it somewhat of a hidden gem but I have to give credit where it's due. I had the pleasure of staying at the Desolation for my birthday weekend and it was nothing short of amazing. The townhouse, the property, the staff, the location, etc. were all superior. If you frequent Tahoe, you know that for the most part the hotels are outdated but this place is so modern and sleek. You get a garage to park your car, a kitchen, living room, two bathrooms, a bedroom, an outdoor seating area with a tub and access to a private beach. There is also a gym, sauna, steam room, pool and hot tub on the grounds. I can't wait to stay here again! read more

Recently spent 2 nights at an Alpine Studio at Desolation with my partner. I must say it was 100% worth the price. The design & architecture of this resort is absolutely stunning. We were blown away by the attention to detail and quality in everything from the materials to the appliances - even the cooking tools, plates, and bowls provided were top notch. The sauna + cold shower was our favorite part of the experience. Most importantly, all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had to change our booking date multiple times and it was by far the smoothest experience I've had with any hotel. Our only minor complaint would be that the oven was difficult to operate. It would be nice if there were instructions provided somewhere. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely love to come back here. read more

Technology has been masterfully integrated throughout the property. The town home had a heated bathroom floor, a soaking tub, two fireplaces, a fully stocked kitchenette and an amazing bed. It was incredibly easy to unwind, relax and feel at home and cared for. The location is ideal. I was able to take full advantage of outdoor activities and the majestic beauty of the area and return to luxuriate in the exceptional accommodations. I have stayed at Desolation Hotel two times now and I will Definitely be going back. The staff is helpful and friendly. The way the space is decorated feels cozy with a modern twist. I love that the owners love dogs! It's so close to the beach! Anddd my favorite part is that there is a big bath tub inside and a beautiful bathtub on the deck outside! Fireplaces, new age appliances. I can go on and on. Already looking forward to my next visit and dip in the pool. I can't recommend this place enough. Besties, if you're trying to book your next luxury nature getaway in South Lake Tahoe, Desolation Hotel is your place. If I can be honest, this type of luxury does come with a price tag and I can 100% say that the price is justifiable! The hotel is compromised of 21 luxurious suites each with soaking tubs both indoor and outdoor, fireplaces, kitchenettes with Bertazzoni gas ranges, utensils, pots and pans , a Dyson hair dryer, rainfall shower head, a washer and dryer etc. Not only that, Desolation Hotel is also within walking distance from the local shops, food, private access to the lake and to Heavenly! Don't even get me started on the amenities-- they have a fitness studio with pelotons, private saunas ( you can book online), a salt water pool/jacuzzi, EV charging ports, private garages ( for Townhomes only ), multiple retractable gates for your pets, and a gourmet restaurant called Maggie's onsite if you just want to relax after a long day of activities. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the front desk and given two complimentary wines of choice and of course given the keys. As for the rooms, I booked the El Dorado Townhouse and it was an amazing experience! After a long day out in the snow riding snowmobiles we made plans to go out after dropping off our belongings-- but once we arrived we ended up changing our minds and decided to try out Maggie's, take a nice bubble bath and watch movies! Love how simple touches can change the look of the a space. I believe $25-30M was spent on the interior alone, and I'd say they did a great job in capturing Japandi Modern Organic vibes. One thing I could admit was I asked the front desk staff if they could share some details on the decor because it was all so so gorgeous. If I had the option to tell my interior designer for my future home to be, I would legitimately tell them to look at the hotel and get inspo from it. Don't hesitate asking them for a late check out, my fiancé and I asked the day of departure and they had no issues extending us for an extra hr. The staff was overall friendly and accommodating, but if I could highlight one person in particular it would be Bethany! She was super patient in answering all my questions whether it was helping decide which room to book all the way to helping me with some billing stuff and being super personable in recommending me some of her favorite food spots in Tahoe. Bethany definitely made our experience that much better. Thank you for so much detail, care and making sure you provide the best service to your guests. If it wasn't for her we would've been doing the typical touristy things we usually do when in Tahoe and wouldn't have as much fun as we did now. We appreciate stays like those who make stays even warmer. You're the best! In conclusion, if ever in Tahoe, Desolation Hotel will be our go to and we can't wait to return! read more
