I don't know where to begin. We have been dealing with Mark Gilk (owner) since 2020. We hired him to asphalt around our pole barn - An area that was grass. We are on the water and have a draining system from the gutters, down the spouts, under ground, and then the water drains directly into the canal. Detroit Asphalt tore up the corrugated tubes and never replaced them, Unbeknownst to us. After a few months and $18,000, the asphalt began to sink and crack. This started directly in line with the downspout. Our vehicles were literally sinking into the asphalt and while working on our car (rotating tires), the car Jack literally imbedded into the asphalt. In the beginning, Mark would respond to our calls "I'm a Christian man, I'm gonna make this right" Yada yada yada. He literally played my husband with his Christian values for 2 years. "I'm really busy but I'll get to you. "Our equipment is needing repair". "It's too wet in the spring, I'll see you in the summer","the season got away from me, i promise I'll see you in the Spring" Well, that never happened! At one point we were literally knee deep in water without drainage. The pole barn floor was soaked. We had to have someone come and cut thru the asphalt to put in new draining equipment. When we cut into the asphalt we found areas of about 3/4" thickness. Our contract stated the asphalt would be 3 inches thick. Now I see why our vehicles sunk. At this time I have weeds growing out areas of asphalt. This "Christian" man and his company is a joke! Phone calls unanswered, voicemails full and this "good Christian man" has stiffed us. Between the 18k, paying to have the drain system replaced, and the disaster from the water in the barn, this company had cost me enough money to warrant an attorney. Don't be a fool - find someone who actually takes pride in their company and the job they do because Mr. Mark Gilk took over his fathers company and made a pile of crap! read more

I had Detroit Asphalt install a new driveway/parking area in my backyard. Their price and quality of work was reasonable, but they had significant issues with being on time. We would set up a date for work and they would completely ghost me. I would often not hear for them for several days, at which point they would call, apologize, and set up a new time. This happened for nearly every interaction I had with them. The parking area is also not to the dimensions we discussed- not by enough for me to make a fuss over, but it's absolutely noticeable. They also did not remove the dirt they displaced, and left large piles of dirt around my property and in the neighboring alley. I would only recommend Detroit Asphalt if you are prioritizing value over professionalism. read more

We purchased our home a little more than a year ago and we knew that we would need to seal coat the driveway. We searched local companies and they quoted us prices that were lower but they also used cheaper products. Mark came out, he explained their products and their process and gave us their quote. With that, we were convinced that Detroit Asphalt and Paving was the company to use. The driveway was in pretty bad shape. It hadn't been done in many years. Detroit Asphalt did a phenomenal job! They filled many cracks (some were quite long and wider than 1/2 inch), spread out the sealant and it's smooth, uniform and consistent. Their work has dramatically improved our curb appeal. Our drive now looks new. My neighbors think it looks beautiful and most importantly... I love it! I will be using Detroit Asphalt and Paving for all my future driveway work. read more

Recently I was in need to have my driveway resurfaced with asphalt/tar. My driveway was looking disastrous and everytime I walked on it I would bring pebbles into my house from the driveway. So, one day I am driving and I see in my neighborhood a big truck resurfacing a lot. So, I stop and get a card. On the phone they were very nice. I gave them my address and within a week I had an estimate mailed to me. The price was good, so I said go ahead and do it. Within 4 days of that call, my driveway now has been resurfaced. Great, but I thought it was going to look like black gold! Not! There are still lines in the driveway where it looks like they should have filled them in. A woman came over that night to see if I liked it - I thought this was nice. I told her that I thought the driveway was going to be repaired as well. Well, she assures me that this will last for about 3 years and then I have to think about resurfacing. So, I thought three years for $150 was good considering if I had concrete done it was cost me over 1800. So, if you do the math I think I'm a winner - just like Charlie Sheen!!!! read more

The owner/salesman is very charming and was good about following through on commitments until after the job was done and the money paid. He left post installation instructions that suggested waiting to seal the asphalt until the following year. I called to question that plan as a large section of the driveway was shedding pebbles and I thought the freeze/thaw of the winter would compromise the integrity of the asphalt. He said he would stop by to look at it that day. Mid afternoon a younger man knocked and said he was Mark's son, and that his dad had suggested he stop by to look at the drive. I showed him the area of concern and he said he'd check with his dad for a course of action. He said his dad told him to seal the drive and said it would be between $400-500. He sprayed something dark on the drive, said it was taking a lot more product than he thought, and that the price might be higher. When finished he said it would be $1200! Fortunately, my husband had arrived home because when we refused to pay him until we spoke to Mark, he became very abusive and violent. We filed a police report and called Mark, who eventually called us back. He said he had no knowledge of the person, and he wasn't an employee of Detroit Asphalt. He said he would come out to investigate my original area of concern and see what had been applied to our drive. He never followed through with that promise. Since last summer when this happened, a large area of the driveway has crumbled away. Instead of the 4-5 inches of asphalt that I paid for, it was hardly 2 inches thick. I am saving for a repair job, but it will be with a different company. read more
