Always educational, informing and entertaining, they provide some of the best television available. No wonder they were selected to provide public television service to all of Canada!

Full disclosure: I once worked for Heritage Newspapers, and I still have friends who work for…read moreHeritage and specifically for the Courier. The Courier lost some subscribers when it was bought by the Journal Register Company, the parent company that oversees the Heritage papers of Western Wayne and Washtenaw County. Those subscribers probably felt it was less of a hometown paper, and many were probably upset by the fact that the Ypsilanti office was closed and staff was consolidated with the staff that covers Belleville. However, I think that the folks putting out the paper really are trying to do a good job. I remember the Courier under the original owners, and I think the paper looks better these days. The layout is consistently cleaner and more interesting under the new owners, and community pages are full of photos of local doings. The report is also decent to good. A July edition had lots of election coverage on the front page and inside coverage ranged from business news to stories about Eastern Michigan unive rsity to news about millage efforts.

Crain's Detroit Business is a business-to-business publication, so it's not terribly useful for the…read moreaverage joe. However, if you're a business owner in Metro Detroit or just like the inside scoop on business trends, it's a good publication. Full disclosure: I work part-time for another Michigan-based business-to-business publication, so I'm somewhat biased. However, I think Crain's does a good job for the niche it fills. They do less well with the outlying communities; in my opinion, several smaller business-to-business publications do a better job of very local business reporting. However, Crain's does a nice job with specific Detroit news that's relevant to local business people. The covers are bright and glossy. Inside, the business features inside are well designed and interesting, and the hard business news is handled well, too. The associated website is also useful and easy to navigate.
