I like the vibe and location of this shop. I am not a coffee drinker but a tea drinker and there were a few varieties to choose from. I was meeting a friend mid afternoon and there was ample seating but some of the half booth seating is close to other tables. During our visits, we had people sitting beside us and two tables away but I didn't feel our conversations were mixed and overheard. It seemed to be a busy place for business meetings but also some people working on their laptops. The service was attentive and I wasn't ready to order but the staff was ready to take my order anytime. I received a small teapot and cup and I allowed my tea to steep longer. The taste wasn't very strong but I could taste the mint. The washrooms are downstairs and you need a fob to access which is connected to a large coffee cup and on the counter. I didn't order a treat but they did have some baked goods to go with a hot drink. If I'm in Calgary and staying close by, I would definitely consider this place to meet friends. read more

The coffee shops I bookmarked were either closed on Sunday or were a bit of a walk for us, and my friend was getting tired and wanted to rest. So we came here. The exterior and signboard looked inviting. Nutella Latte and Chicken with Bacon Fig Jam sandwich? I'm sold. Bad mistake. The place was empty saved for 1 taken table. I decided to get the chocolate ganache latte instead of nutella latte as I thought the chocolate taste would be richer. Wrong. The drink was very weak, I could hardly taste the chocolate in it. There was no ganache in it, or if there was, it was very minimal. The one and only staff was not very friendly or seemed to want to take order (it seemed to be a common theme in most small cafes/casual dining places I went in Calgary). So I did not bother asking about the chicken and bacon fig jam sandwich. At half an hour before the closing time, the staff came over wanting to clear our table when it was obvious we were not done yet. The whole experience was quite off-putting. Avoid this place if you are going to be here an hour before closing time, and you want to rest for a bit to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. read more

Today we ate breakfast at Deville Coffee. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on Brioche and a Chai Latte. My husband ordered the egg, sausage and cheese wrap and a drip coffee. We both thought our sandwiches were delicious! My sandwich had fresh arugula and tomato, which was a nice surprise. The service was very friendly and the employees checked on us to make sure we enjoyed our food. This is a clean coffee shop with plenty of choices and a large selection of teas, as well. Amazingly expensive, especially for what you get in quality. Milk way too hot for good espresso based drinks. Kills the creamy natural sweetness of the milk. The micro foam not really there (again probably due to overheating the milk). Hard to really judge the taste/flavor of the actual coffee. I literally parked right outside of deVille in Fashion Central today without knowing it was there. The best part is, I had pulled over to scout for the next cafe I wanted to try. My visit here was great from the first few seconds I walked in, as I was greeted by the smell of fresh espresso. Like Kate L M, I knew about the Nutella latte made popular at deVille, but instead decided on the hot chocolate. Made with Callebaut chocolate, how could they go wrong? (As a side note, I impressed myself just now by the fact that I spelled Callebaut right without looking it up first. Yes, I'm easily impressed.) The room was spacious and modern. The hot chocolate tasted awesome and I look forward to visiting this deVille again. I think next time I'll try the Bailey's latte -- bonus points to deVille for coming up with pretty awesome combinations! read more

* Bad luck * I think I had bad luck here. I came once and got an espresso that was ok, and showed potential. So I revisited a second time and then was convinced that they simply aren't consistent. Service the first time was friendly, but a bit clueless as they couldn't get the cash register to work correctly. But the espresso was passable. On the second visit there was a different team that was even more clueless. Again the same issues with operating the cash register, but also bad issues with the espresso. It was underextracted which resulted in a really sour and thin taste. Meh. I think their grind is a bit off, and perhaps their machine is also running below normal temp. You know its a good coffee shop when there's a line in the morning and the baristas are handling the morning rush with style! Came here on a recommendation by a friend as it was nearby where we were. Came in for breakfast, and got myself a Bacon Breakfast Sandwich and a Macchiato. The macchiato was amazing, beautifully made and quick despite the rush! The sandwich was lacking a bit, as it was just an english muffin with egg and bacon pressed in a panini press! Bacon was good, but was a previously prepared, frozen sandwich. Hmmm no electrical outlet ruined my plan to work on laptop even though they have free wifi. The place was busy on a weekday afternoon but I managed to find a seat anyways. The atmosphere was cozy and it's the perfect place to catch up with friends over coffee. I got the Nutella latte as per Yelp friends suggestions. It wasn't too sweet and I can definitely taste the Nutella. It's not my favorite. I found it to be like a light nutty mocha. Needed something a little more powering. Like more chocolate! I also got the Sicilian sandwich. It was toasted and delicious with layers of meat. And the side salad with citrus dressing was amazing!! Total for drink and sandwich came to be $14. OMG I will be coming back here as soon as I can. The Nutella macaroons and Nutella lattes are AMAZING. Staff are really friendly and I was pleasantly surprised by the heart in the foam of my latte. I crave Nutella lattes on a regular basis now, so I can't wait until I'm back in this city for the summer. $5 for a large latte may seem expensive to some but I really don't find it that much more expensive than Starbucks and it tastes way better! Deville Coffee has one of the best tasting Americanos in Calgary. For the espresso alone, this little cafe gets five stars! I walk past Deville several times a week on my way to Goodlife. Today, I had a few minutes to spare and popped in for an Americano to get out of the cold. I drink a LOT of espresso and expected so/so average. Absolutely LOVE Deville Coffee and their Carmel Latte! They are a bit on the pricey side with their pastries and sandwiches, however the rare time I do visit them, its usually for a beverage and treat to go. Worth the price for an excellent coffee. The staff is friendly and nice every time I have visited. As I mentioned I have never had an opportunity to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, but its always steady with people chatting or working at a table. I love a great latte! When I travel for work I really enjoy finding and trying new coffee places. I found this place on Yelp and I could just tell by he photos that I wasn't going to be disappointed. The espresso is delicious! My latte was perfect! They have soy milk, almond milk, and I think the third was hemp if you don't drink regular milk. Didn't try the food because I was in a rush but maybe tomorrow. They only have two sizes for hot drinks, small and large. They told me the large gets 1.5 shots of espresso... Like other deVille locations - the newest addition to the clan is funky & modern, in a great location, and serving delicious coffee & treats. *They've been open since February 2010 My first experience here was on a Friday afternoon, just before the hour I like to call 'rush from the core' - this is ideal people watching :)) We obviously chose a cozy red booth right near the window so we could watch the world go by. My friend had the almost famous Nutella Latte (I always recommend this to friends purely due to it's popularity - I've had but one sip of this treat, it's a little too decadent for my taste). I had my usual Americano. Perfection. Be warned, this coffee shop is based in the utterly fabulous Fashion Central building - 3 floors of luxury retailers including Betsey Johnson, Motek, and Beauty Land. If you're anything like me, you might go in for a scone and walk out with a purse.... oops. The combination of bustling fashionista's, free wireless, cool decor & tunes, and some of the best joe in cow town, makes this coffee shop a favourite on my list. When I go to a coffee shop, I always order a standard soy latte since I am lactose intolerant. It gives me a standard for comparing coffee shops. I have to say, I'm very pleased with deVille. Their espresso has great flavor, the soy milk they use is not too beany tasting. It was very smooth and enjoyable. As far as service goes, the employees were friendly and fast. I think I only waited one minute from the time I ordered to the time I got my drink. The decor is modern. They also have a great selection of sandwiches and baked goods. Hands-down the best iced chai latte I've had in the city. The ambiance is relaxed and upscale without feeling pretentious. Service was friendly and efficient - the lady making the drinks took our order while we were in line so she could get started faster. None of the staff made you feel as if you were imposing on them by daring to order a beverage, which sometimes happens at other hipster-frequented coffee shops I've been to. Their specialty lattes are to die for. While, their pecan bars and delightfully multi-coloured macaroons, featuring : mint chocolate and coconut (among many other flavours) would more than satisfy any sweet tooth. For lunch, one can be comforted by a classic grilled cheese with a side of bacon jam. Or a bacon cheddar scone at any time of day. But be aware! The scones are made fresh in the morning and are often completely cleared out by the afternoon so don't get your hopes up too high for getting one really late in the day. In terms of DeVille's being a great place to work, the location on 1st Street seems to specifically cater to the businesses nearby. So there is not ample seating and no outlets, as far as I can see. In any case, there's also no free Wi-Fi. But that's not a huge problem since the Wi-Fi from David's Tea is open and very strong. It's not a place for the stay and write a while, but rather for the get your fix and bring it back to your office or stay for a short while category. Yet, I don't find a problem with this since that's what this location caters to and they certainly deliver. The staff are very friendly and surprisingly awake at 7:30AM. I give them kudos for that! This place is good but pretty expensive. $50 took off the hunger's edge,gave us a warm feeling with either a wine or a latte and left a sweet finish with a macaroon. Steep when what was going to be dinner turned into a between lunch and dinner snack. The food was good quality and fairly healthy (ignore the drinks and dessert!) so all and all that's not bad if you know what you're getting yourself into. They DID card me for wine which was sweet as I'm now closer to 40 than 20 as my sister likes to point out and I could biologically have a child that is old enough to legally drink which is also very scary but makes it even more sweet that the barista felt I might be questionable. Anyway I wouldn't hesitate to return if I was close but I don't know if it's worth a trip out of my way either. read more

I go here so often they know my name, how I like my coffee, my favourite menu item, they can even tell when I'm having an off day. I always feel special when I come in (that is until the baristas recite name and order, over and over again for seemingly the majority of customers that walk in. And there are a LOT of customers.) Is there coffee and food good? Yes, however, they are way overpriced. They charge $5.00 for an espresso macchiato, $1.50-$2.00 more than anywhere else. That's only two shots of espresso and a touch of foam. That's buffoonery! I recently went there with a colleague and grabbed two sandwiches with salad and a one can of pop. The price? $32.00. They recently opened a location around 2nd St and 2nd Ave. and now I see they are going to open a new location in Market Mall. It just amazes me that people would pay that kind of money for something that they can get for 50-70% less somewhere else. And in a down market, it tells you the mentality of folks in Calgary.
